How many countries have you visited?

Florally · 28/05/2025 21:28

My kids were playing around with AI and learned that the average person on earth has been to less than one country (other than their country of residence..)

And for the UK specifically, 9. (Point something…)

I’m just being pointlessly nosy, mostly because I thought it would be much lower. (For example, a lot of people I know go back to the same destination year on year..)

How about you?

Edited, forgot France so 17.

CatteryCatz · 28/05/2025 23:15

I’ve done:

Wales
England
USA
Spain (I’ve been several times)
Greece

I’d love to travel to more places, but we can’t afford it at the moment. Sweden, Norway and Canada are at the top of my list.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 28/05/2025 23:16

Live in Scotland, have been to…

England
Wales
Republic of Ireland
France
Belgium
Spain
Netherlands
Italy
Vatican City
Croatia
Poland
Germany
Czech Republic
Norway
Denmark
Greece
USA

i didn’t travel abroad as a child, and couldn’t afford it much in my 20s but have been trying to make up for it in the last 20 years.

Samuraipizzacat · 28/05/2025 23:17

I’m in my 40s and have been to 49 countries.
I travelled a lot for work for a good 10 years that racked up a lot of places.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 28/05/2025 23:17

Aside from England, where I was born and still live, just Wales and Scotland. That's it.

cariadlet · 28/05/2025 23:22

murasaki · 28/05/2025 23:13

I didn't count England, Scotland and Wales.....

Edited to add I forgot Norway, so that's 25/26.

Edited

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were historically separate nations (at least NI used to be part of a united Ireland which was once a separate country) but now they are all part of the UK so if you count them (I've been to all 4 but didn't count them because I'm British and have always lived in the UK) then I think they can only really be counted once, not as 4 separate countries.

But I do think it's fair to count both East Germany and West Germany separately because when they existed, they were completely separate countries - like North Korea and South Korea or Sudan and South Sudan today.

AdoraBell · 28/05/2025 23:25

I forgot Ireland.

Nant90 · 28/05/2025 23:31

I'm 49 and have been to:

France
Italy
Czech Republic
Germany
Greece
Turkey
Egypt
Israel
Jordan
Belgium
Vatican City
The Netherlands
Spain
Finland
Thailand
USA
Croatia
Hungary
Austria
Switzerland
Luxembourg
Denmark
Sweden

My dc have been to 13 (aged 18 and 15) and will go to their 14th in the summer. We have also been to all 4 nations of the UK. I really want to go to Poland, Estonia, Vietnam, Canada and South America, as well as going back to some of the places I've already been. But time and finances are limited, sadly.

Yes, I didn't count the UK either for the reasons you stated, and it was very much going to to a different country re East Germany.

Franchisingentrepreneur · 28/05/2025 23:34

12

BitOutOfPractice · 28/05/2025 23:37

Around 40 (not counting UK or the 4 home nations). I’ve visited all 27 EU countries. As a sort of Brexit protest! 😆

MyOtherProfile · 28/05/2025 23:42

32, and lived in 4 of them.

3 in Asia
4 in Africa
1 in N America
The rest in Europe.

This doesn't make sense.

You don't count the 4 countries of the UK because they were historically separate nations but now all part of the UK.

You count E and W Germany as 2 separate countries because they were historically but now one country.

"Scotland is a country within the multinational state of the United Kingdom."
From the Scottish government website.

murasaki · 28/05/2025 23:54

Last time I went to Scotland they didn't have their own parliament, so I would count them as part of the UK for my total. Amd as i live in the UK i didn't count it. Wales is a principality so wouldn't count as separate anyway. When I went to East Germany it was its own country pre fall of the Berlin Wall, so it counts. It wouldn't count now.

greycross · 28/05/2025 23:55

France
Germany
Belgium
Italy
Monaco
Spain (including multiple Canary Islands)
Poland
Turkey
Cyprus
Greece (multiple Greek Islands)
Portugal
China
USA
(and England, Wales, Scotland in the UK)

It's logical if, when counting the countries you have visited, you only include independent, self governing sovereign states rather than cultural entities which may have been independent at a previous point in their history.

I would count East Germany and West Germany separately as they were internationally recognised separate states at the time the pp visited them.

When listing Germany for myself, I only counted it as one country because I visited it after reunification.

I would count the UK as one country because, although Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have a certain degree of self government following devolution and the establishment of the Senedd, the Scottish Parliament and Stormont, they are not independent states. If they were, Plaid Cymru and the SNP would not still be advocating for Independence.

You would need to have a time machine and travel back a few hundred years before the Act of Union to visit Scotland when it was a separate, independent country.
