My darling husband

He’s had a stroke following a number of open heart surgeries to repair and replace his heart valves. I can’t breathe, I overheard them say terminal stroke. I love him so much.

Thinking of you. I remember your previous thread back at the start of the year when your DH was in ICU with cellulitis and had surgery. I hope the cruise gave you some respite and some special memories. I think @Isthisreasonable has given some helpful insight.

Maddy70 · 15/05/2025 17:45

My husband had a stroke last year they said he probably wouldn't come out of it. He actually did but is far from the person he was before. It's utterly devastating and I felt so angry as well as every other emotion. I still do. Allow others in to give practical help of you have pets can someone look after them. Leab on whoever you need to. You are not alone. I'm so sorry

I’m 4 hours from home, he was blue lighted to hospital after our return from a cruise. I’ve got on the train to go see my children - I can’t stop crying.

So sorry @Stickygloop thinking of you xx

Pollqueen · 15/05/2025 17:45

Sending love and prayers Sticky. I will hold you and your lovely husband in my thoughts tonight.

I hope you are reconciled with your family soon x

I am so sorry, OP. So sorry.

LilyMay01 · 15/05/2025 17:48

I am so so sorry to hear this. What an awful shock. I hope you have some people you can lean on for support. I don’t know if you’re in the UK, but there’s the Stroke Association UK and they have a helpline you can ring and information on their website: https://www.stroke.org.uk/stroke/support

Sending you strength 💐

Sending hugs. My DF had a massive stroke. If it's helpful this is how it progressed. They stopped food & water after 48 hours as there had been no improvement in his GCS score. They said it was difficult to predict how long it would take but they kept him comfortable. He eventually passed away a week after they withdrew food and water. I gather that this is the longer end of the spectrum, it might be much quicker. They did encourage us to keep talking to him as his hearing may have been one of the last things to go. Hopefully you will all get time to say whatever you want to say. Thinking of you.

Withdrawing good and water is not something that I have ever seen done unless someone was unable to swallow. And I’m a nurse looking after end of life patients ver frequently.

LAMPS1 · 15/05/2025 17:56

I’ll be keeping you and your wonderful husband in my thoughts and prayers over the coming days OP. I know you have to be realistic but don’t give up hope either. Hope you will be with your children very soon and that they are old enough to take charge.

Gilead · 15/05/2025 17:57

I’m so sorry. What a mouthing to happen; thinking of you and your husband.

SilenceInside · 15/05/2025 17:59

Just wanted to add my handhold too, I'm so sorry for you and your children. Hopefully you will be with them soon. 💐

LakieLady · 15/05/2025 17:59

I'm so sorry, OP, you must be beyond devastated.

I had a similar experience when my DP died 5 years ago, and I can still remember how awful it was. I felt as though I'd been winded when I took the call from the hospital, I couldn't take it in. I hope your children will be able to be with you to support you.

Sending the warmest of hugs.

Wakemeupbe4yougogo · 15/05/2025 18:00

I'm so dreadfully sorry, OP. You must be in complete shock. Try to keep drinking (sugary tea is great) if you can't eat - and let your family support you through this. You're in my thoughts.

ArtTheClown · 15/05/2025 18:00

I'm so, so sorry.
My brother had a terminal stroke last year. He was kept very comfortable in hospital, he looked so peaceful.

lifeonmars100 · 15/05/2025 18:02

Deeply sorry, nothing that I can say as a stranger on the internet or indeed if I was to know you in real life, but this is to let you know that I feel for you and send love x
