He’s had a stroke following a number of open heart surgeries to repair and replace his heart valves. I can’t breathe, I overheard them say terminal stroke. I love him so much.

I'm so sorry OP. Thinking of you and your children and I hope you all get to say what you need to ♥️

I’m so sorry you are going through this, I am 5 weeks further along the road with the same situation. My dh was slightly older but still relatively young and the stroke came totally out of the blue.
It’s a horrendous and traumatic experience so my heart goes out to you, I hope you and your children can be a great support and comfort to you and each other as mine have been. You’ll find strength you never knew you had to help you through it.
We have been over whelmed by the support and kindness from friends and neighbours some who we haven’t seen for many years .
I have to say the medical team were beyond fantastic and we were able to be fully involved
in the decision process, sadly our only option was to remove life support and dh died peacefully.
I actually worked for many years with severely brain damaged people which gave me a real understanding of the alternatives. I have seen first hand the reality of such a life for both patients and families and it is truly heartbreaking.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family xx

I’m so sorry oP.

I clicked on this thread because of your wonderful, loving title. So rare to see this and you should feel very proud that that is how you felt about him. I’m happy for you both that you did.

Sorry for your loss - but don’t forget how much you have in him having been a part of your life. He was loved op, which is ultimately the most we can do for anyone, and the most any of us can really wish for.

Hold on to each other x

Thinking of you.

Thinking of you all.

I hope you have wonderful memories of your time together, the way you describe him makes me think you had a lovely marriage.

I lost my dad to a stroke last year, it's so hard to let go but all being together really helped us all.

TidyTealRobin · 18/05/2025 14:47

I am so sorry to hear this. Hope you have close friends and family around to share your fears.

My heart goes out to you @Lookingaftermyself I know from experience how devastating it is when something like this happens out of the blue. One minute you’re getting on with life and the next minute life is changed for ever. It’s so very hard.

I had to make a similar decision about removing life support for my husband after a very late diagnosis of a tumour we had no idea was there until he collapsed. As in your own situation, the alternative would have been unthinkable, and the only comfort comes from knowing that you made the right, and very courageous decision in the best interests of the one you love.

We find strength we didn’t know we had when we’re faced with these decisions, and I can only tell you from experience that although life seems very harsh art the moment, the pain will ease with time and the better memories will come back. Sending you a very unmumsnetty hug. ❤️
