'I don't shower every day'

When someone states they don't shower every day would you assume they are washing the important bits on the days they are not showering or would you think they are completely unwashed on those days?
Going off the BO wafting around in the shops yesterday I would assume most people are not washing inbetween showering!

I don’t get this obsessive showering every day unless you have a dirty or really manual job. Obviously summer days when everyone is a bit sweaty is different, but the amount of water we waste with this is ridiculous. Same with clothes washing. It’s absolutely not necessary. What does worry me tho are these deodorants that claim to last 72 hours. 🥺

Cakencookieobsessed · 27/04/2025 08:26

It's not obsessive to shower every day. We're human, we sweat, have sex and go to the toilet. I'd hope at least they were washing their face, underarms, genitals and arse.

WhiteRosesAndThistles · 27/04/2025 08:29

My deodorant claims to last 96 hours!
I wonder if some people forget they only apply deodorant to their underarms and end up stinking from other areas...

I agree.

People seem to smell awful now. So many obviously not washing properly. Yes, I appreciate some disabled or elderly people etc may find it difficult for many reasons but the vast majority of non washing people are just lazy fuckers. It’s horrible.

alcoholnightmare · 27/04/2025 08:32

Completely unwashed. Yuck.

breadpie · 27/04/2025 08:36

@ Pigeonqueen... you don't know why people don't shower every day, put a peg on your nose and wind your judgemental neck in.

springintoaction321 · 27/04/2025 08:36

Ooooo 'We're all so precious'

Aren't people awful???

Maybe get on with your life and stop fussing about shit all

Cyclistmumgrandma · 27/04/2025 08:37

No, I don't shower every day. Yes, I do wash under arms, under boobs, and genital area/bum every day (sometimes twice if it's been a busy day). I think having a bidet helps with that.

NuffSaidSam · 27/04/2025 08:38

I haven't noticed an epidemic of smelly people. Sometimes someone who clearly has other issues is a bit whiffy. Or men on the tube home after a hot day. But most people smell fine.

Maybe I'm one of the smelly ones so I don't notice it?

Or maybe I live in a particularly clean area?

Simplepink · 27/04/2025 08:40

Yeah a fanny splash every day and deodorant but honestly full showers are ridiculous and wasteful,

I agree. We have a bum gun (bidet hose) so I feel clean after going to the loo but without that I want a shower as soon as I get home to be honest. If I can't have a shower for any reason I will use a wash cloth to wash my face and underarms.

OllyBJolly · 27/04/2025 08:41

Growing up in the 60s and 70s and possibly into the 80, it wasn't usual to have showers in houses in my demographic (inner city council housing, then new town council housing). As children, we had a bath once a week, using the same water, priority based on age. (TF I was second oldest of 5). I don't recall either parent having many baths.

We did have showers at secondary school for after PE. Communal and always cold so not a lot of cleansing went on.

I don't remember smelly people then but maybe the fag reek hid it all....

I literally said some disabled people and elderly people have difficulty washing - before you make assumptions about me I am actually disabled myself, on the highest rates of PIP indefinitely and my son is also disabled. I do know there are reasons why people struggle to wash. And yes, sometimes it’s financial etc too. But we’ve also got to this weird point in society where no one is ever allowed to say actually that’s horrible and for the most part people who just stink are just not washing properly because they can’t be bothered. It’s a minority of people that genuinely have difficulties.

A lot of posters on mn aren’t even using soap on their genitals and arse. No wonder many people are stinkers.

131104E · 27/04/2025 08:49

Why would you not shower everyday?

TheCurious0range · 27/04/2025 08:50

We had to have our shower fixed last year which out of our of action for a couple of days, so I had a shower on the Tuesday evening, strip wash (which took longer than a shower without hair washing) Wednesday and Thursday by Friday morning I felt really grotty. I was so glad to get back under a hot shower.
I had a shower last night as I'd been gardening, I applied deodorant after (mitchum). I haven't showered yet this morning, I don't smell fresh. It's not even necessarily BO I'm not a sweaty person. If I was going out this morning I would shower first as it's is I have a few bits to finish in the garden so will do those then shower.

outofofficeagain · 27/04/2025 08:50

I don’t shower everyday. I shower ‘most days’ but sometimes I’ll think I’ll
shower later then forget. So there’s probably one day a week I don’t. Usually when I’m at home all day so it doesn’t really matter.

I don’t think it’s a problem and I don’t think people smell for that. Not washing clothes regularly is more of a cause of general smells.

Mumsnet has bonkers standards though and there will also be someone who comes along saying they shower 3 times a day and wash their bedding every day etc

OrlandointheWilderness · 27/04/2025 08:54

I couldn’t stand not showering every day. I need it, I’m less than fresh and lovely and I’ve slept all night and sweated/sex etc. sometimes a day I’ll shower twice if I run in the evening.

Sheknowsaboutme · 27/04/2025 08:57

I shower in the evening. Just body, but if my hair needs a wash i have one in the morning.

my colleague is obese and she told us a while ago she showers 2-3 times a week. I dont think that enough. She gets boob sweat, fanny sweat and chaffs. Its not nice and that sweat can irritate the skin.

Gandalfatemyhamster · 27/04/2025 09:01

I’m an oily skinned Mediterranean so I shower each day. I can understand how some blondes or less sweaty people might not. It does feel unfair heating and electric wise, I feel if I submit a skin and hair particle to British Gas I should get some sort of discount (semi joking)

TheAmusedQuail · 27/04/2025 09:02

When I lived in the US, had more bathrooms than sense (and free utilities) it was super hot. My English self couldn't cope with the heat so I showered 2 or 3 times a day. Just to avoid feeling sticky and damp and to cool off. Wrecked my skin, which became dryer and dryer.

During covid lockdowns, I degraded more and more. Stopped washing my hair as often. Stopped showering, going to a flannel wash of face, pits, fanny and feet. THEN the everyday wash started to slip. Teeth were cleaned twice a day though. Can't bear uncleaned teeth.

But I think that was a mental / stress / depression thing. I don't always shower (or bath) but I always wash. I can't imagine wafting around with my lady garden unwashed. Or my armpits come to that.

Yesterday, I was out shopping and a couple were behind me while I was looking at something on shelf and there was a stench. I imagine that is what long-term unwashed smells like. Urgh.

iseethembloom · 27/04/2025 09:05

I shower every other day or sometimes every third day and I don’t wash my armpits or genital / bum region in between showers.

I'm pretty sure I don’t smell.

But you poo everyday. And wipe with (presumably) just dry toilet paper.

I do think people are washing less regularly at the moment, we went shopping yesterday and so many people had bags of brand new clothes but stunk to high heaven!
The ones in the changing rooms trying stuff on made me feel a bit sick, I wouldn't want to buy something they had tried on.
I do wonder if nothing has really changed but because smoking indoors has been banned it is just not masking people's BO anymore!
