'I don't shower every day'

When someone states they don't shower every day would you assume they are washing the important bits on the days they are not showering or would you think they are completely unwashed on those days?
Going off the BO wafting around in the shops yesterday I would assume most people are not washing inbetween showering!

You never just cosy in and fall asleep? What if you have sex at 3am? do you get up and shower straight away? I think I would feel quite offended if my OH got up for a shower after sex, it would make me feel like he felt dirty. Do you feel dirty after sex?

I’ve got 3 young kids, one of whom is severely disabled and requires round the clock care. I’m not having much 3am sex TBH 😂

People who think they don’t smell may be kidding themselves. Google “nose blindness.”

I have a teenager who would certainly tell me if I smelled. As I’ve become older, if I shower every day my dry skin becomes even drier. A quick shower becomes a much longer process if I then have to moisturise my whole body. I also sweat a whole lot less than I used to. Unless it’s a particularly warm or humid day, I don’t need deodorant.

There is no right and wrong number of showers a person needs, it’s all about the individual and what works for them. For me a shower every couple of days, 3 at a push is fine. I WFH most days, but if I’m out and about in the city, I need to shower more often as I feel unclean.

Amybelle88 · 28/04/2025 11:09

@outofofficeagainhonestly, just get a shower a day.

Do you not wipe properly when you open your bowels? Do you not clean yourself properly after sex? Sounds like there’s bigger issues with your hygiene that could easily be solved without obsessively showering every day.

How do you clean yourself properly if not with a shower? Do you use a bidet?

@ThisOldThang thanks for that helpful advice. I've just put my machine on with soda crystals on a hot wash. Much like the colleague I mentioned earlier, I too have a very poor sense of smell and it makes me paranoid sometimes. I go through patches of zero ability but I'm feeling it's quite sharp at the moment and I put my head in the machine and there was a mild but foul smell. Dd had a nose like a fox so she is my go to for smell related advice, I really lack confidence around this.

I agree that clothes and dirty washing machines are likely a bigger culprit than the regularity of showering.

Like the PP said, get into a habit of cleaning your washing machine regularly. I run a 90c wash once a month in an empty machine....you can put a capful of white vinegar, lemon juice or Zoflora in the drum and drawer or B&M sell washing machine cleaning powder pretty cheaply. I have a reminder set on my phone to do this once a month. Leave the door and drawer open on your washing machine for at least an hour every time you empty it and you'll have no issues with mould.

I also wash everything on a 3hr eco wash or for bedding, towels and anything heavily soiled the long cotton wash. Quick washes at 30c aren't going to get things properly clean, they're designed for a handful of items and not a full wash.

I shower every other day.i do not wash my pits and bits when it’s not a shower day. I’m very single so no danger of having sex at 3am! I don’t smell…my teenage daughter would soon tell me if I stink.

There's no excuse in this day and age to not have a fast daily shower. Those who say it's bad for the environment are just lazy and looking for excuses. If you're having a wash you may aswell just have a shower instead 🚿 it's actually easier than faffing around trying to wash your arse whilst trying not to soak the floor. You feel so much better when clean and fresh, it's good for the head.

erm...I literally dont have a shower!
nor a gym membership, nor a very accommodating neighbour or friend who would let me whip my kit off in their house!
so yes, I do use soap and water daily.....no, I dont use my imaginary shower!🙄

Buzyizzy217 · 29/04/2025 09:55

Why be critical of someone else’s routine, just because it’s different and not ocd like yours presumably is. Not everyone can afford the energy to run hot water. We have families that struggle to afford to use the hob and you’re saying this? Seriously? Anyway, as sure as eggs is eggs water shortages are coming, so maybe they are doing their bit now. Unlike you.

You probably do smell though. How can you not?
Your daughter's probably gone "nose blind". Like people who smoke and can't smell it on themselves.

Never had a conversation with someone from Japan about showering then I take it.

Chances are you do smell. Love.

This thread is beginning to sound like primary school in places. ‘Yes you do smell. Yes you do. You smell! Smelly!’

A lot of arrogance being displayed by people who don’t have the imagination to see that their way is not the only way. (And who are probably now assuming I must be smelly too. 🙄 )

Certainly never where they've been justifying how little they wash their bodies, no.

Have you?

What does this even mean ? Half of May family are from abroad including Angola in Africa and they shower twice a day 😏

That's exactly what I mean – it's only white people that compete about how little they can get away with washing.

Horticula · 01/05/2025 13:57

Interestingly I had a conversation today about cleanliness and personal hygiene with my diabetes nurse at my review. She suggested I could go onto a different medication but in her words, they only prescribe it for people with excellent personal hygiene which she could tell I had, because it can give you acidic urine and make you susceptible to thrush and UTIs so it's very important to have a shower at least once every day.
I'm not sure how she decides if someone shouldn't be prescribed it, presumably she's near them so can tell if they aren't that clean.

I think it's pretty arrogant to assume that you can get away with minimal showering, without being smelly...
Makes no sense.

TheAmusedQuail · 02/05/2025 09:52

White people (look at all the white celebs who mention not showering a lot) have the luxury of being low key stinky/not showering much. The idea is that it is one thing to have full access to a shower and choose not to use it, but for some groups, 1) that access would be a luxury and 2) marginalised groups would be MUCH more judged for being mildly wiffy. Whereas your posh white woman isn't going to be judged.

Bragging about not bathing your kids is a blatant act of white privilege

Growing up in the 80s we didn't have a shower, people were starting to get them but usually it was just a hose thing over the bath. As a child, bath time was on a Saturday night, with washes at the sink in between. There would be a smelly kid at school, but it wasn't every single child that was smelling. Clothes wouldn't be washed as often either, but I suspect the fabrics they were made from were better than today's.

Hallywally · 02/05/2025 11:17

I shower every other day but on non-showering days wash my pits, bits, feet and underboobs twice a day. Even on showering days those bits get a wipe before bedtime. On work days I also wear a totally clean set of clothes every day.

Makes no sense.

As I said upthread, thorough strip washes do the job just as well.

MovingBird123 · 02/05/2025 14:57

It seems to me that lots of smelly people here just can't comprehend that others don't get as smelly as them, and can genuinely get away without a shower everyday...
