'I don't shower every day'

When someone states they don't shower every day would you assume they are washing the important bits on the days they are not showering or would you think they are completely unwashed on those days?
Going off the BO wafting around in the shops yesterday I would assume most people are not washing inbetween showering!

The thought of how many people are going about with crusty unwashed anuses is disgusting.

I find it weirder tbh when people say they don’t shower every day but do have a flannel wash. I do the latter when wild camping and it’s much more of a faff and time consuming fannying about with separate flannels and splashing water around than it is to jump under running water for a minute.

Beyond that I’m not particularly invested. I don’t notice that many stinky people, but often go to the supermarket immediately after a run so am probably one of them sometimes.

The people I know who do flannel washes are either elderly or disabled which is fair enough, it’s too much effort/pain to shower or bathe. I don’t know why anyone else would do it as you can’t beat the freshness of being clean

Sorrelbird · 27/04/2025 09:36

People are so judgmental over this. Just because you stink if you miss a shower doesn’t mean I do.

That is an incredibly odd thing to think about. And suggests you don't know how to wipe your bum properly.

Yes, I accept this. I think there are levels of cleanliness. Mine isn't as high now as it used to be. But I draw the line at not doing the smelliest bits daily. Clean bits, clean underwear, clean teeth.

Not showering directly impacts my ability to function. But, I wish some fad would sweep the nation to encourage people to take fewer showers. Being perfectly clean does the world no favours.

Why the assumption that everyone has a shower installed?

I assume people mean bath or shower to mean the same. I rarely shower but I do bathe.

soupyspoon · 27/04/2025 09:37

From memory a flannel wash is a huge faff, takes ages and makes a lot of water every where.

I honestly don’t know how the human race got to where it is sometimes, we’re the cleanest we’ve ever been able to be yet there are people still filthy. I can’t imagine what it was like 100s/1000s of years ago, how did people want sex!

I totally agree with her. 2 or 3 day bum is an absolutely rank thought.

Yes I find this weird. I assume water is freely available for most households now, it’s not 1950 where you had to share a bath a week. The only people I know who still strip wash are older. I still feel grimy if I have to strip wash

Doggymummar · 27/04/2025 09:38

I don't shower everyday. Mental health issues prevent me, but if I don't shower before bed, I shower before I get dressed the next day. So it's not much longer.

Sickofschoolruns · 27/04/2025 09:39

I had a colleague that claimed she showered twice a day and thought it was disgusting if people did not. If you used the toilet after her there was a fusty smell. I always wondered if actually she was causing issues by using soap in that area so regularly and actually the people that obsessively shower and use soap in those areas so often don't realise that others do not have the same issues they do.

You don’t need to shower every day.. waste of water

Isn’t is just use of water?

why is using water, to wash, seen as a waste?

Moanycowbag · 27/04/2025 09:39

I blame the new natural deodorants, I have one and it leaves me stinking after an hour or two, and the not washing hair, dirty hair smells worse than BO

lljkk · 27/04/2025 09:39

I don't have conversations in person about other people's self-body-washing habits. Online, I don't care enough about what they do so I don't think about making assumptions about it.

I find it funny that MNers are obsessed with the smell of BO but nobody comments on diesel or petrol fumes which are everywhere and awful, or powerful disinfectants and soaps, and comment rarely about awful perfumes randomly encountered in the street, or detergent smells if you encounter 2nd hand clothes. Or the horrendous stink of coffee (because it does smell awful imho). All of those are everywhere. I used to gag whenever I walked into some stores from the strong soap smells. So I do wonder about how some noses are sensitive to only smells that the same people interpret moral value as to why they smelled that. If you reckon that BO is everywhere, you can probably desensitise yourself to stop noticing it, like most people desensitise selves to not notice the diesel fumes etc.

Eh.. that poster is talking about other people, not themselves.
There are many people who don’t wipe their bum properly, just look at the number of posts about mens skid marked underwear

Cyclistmumgrandma · 27/04/2025 08:37

No, I don't shower every day. Yes, I do wash under arms, under boobs, and genital area/bum every day (sometimes twice if it's been a busy day). I think having a bidet helps with that.

Would be quicker and more effective to just shower.

GameOfJones · 27/04/2025 09:41

I have a 60 second shower every day to wash my face and body but only wash my hair three times a week. But even though I daily wash I don't think that most people smell? There will be loads and loads of people I pass every day that haven't had a daily wash and I'm sure I wouldn't be able to tell.

It's not very often I notice someone that is smelly and even if they are I think not washing clothes enough (or hot enough!) is a culprit too.

Oh god dirty unwashed hair stinks. Some people only wish it once a week or so and you can definitely tell when they walk past and waft it. It had a distinctive smell.

anonny55 · 27/04/2025 09:41

Depends. On average I probably shower 5x a week. But daily I do face, pits, arse and obviously vagina. If DH is home (works away) and sex may be on the cards I make sure I get in the shower and have a good scrub before bed. If I’ve been to the gym or been extensively cleaning etc I will ensure a shower too

Because most of those other smells are pleasant to most people..

Where else should put deodorant?

Edited

Well you say that but I saw a TV ad yesterday for a new Sure ALL BODY deodorant. Aside from the chemicals and stickiness/powdery-ness, this is gross if it’s removing the need for washing regularly!

ambercabs · 27/04/2025 09:39

Exactly, it’s like saying putting the fire on when it’s cold is a waste of electric/gas
Nope it’s just using it as intended

beautyqueeen · 27/04/2025 09:46

Ah the great unwashed, it’s an epidemic! I don’t particularly like showers but will after the gym or in a rush but I do have a bath every day.. Nothing worse than scruffy people, it’s just common decency to be clean if you’re interacting with others.

Anewuser · 27/04/2025 09:47

I don’t understand the people that say they don’t shower every day but wash: face, pits, genitals and bum. By the time you’ve done that I would have been out of the shower and dried. A shower only takes me three minutes to wash all those bits but feels so much cleaner.

I do however only wash my hair once a week.
