'I don't shower every day'

When someone states they don't shower every day would you assume they are washing the important bits on the days they are not showering or would you think they are completely unwashed on those days?
Going off the BO wafting around in the shops yesterday I would assume most people are not washing inbetween showering!

Why the assumption that everyone has a shower installed?

I shower every other day or sometimes every third day and I don’t wash my armpits or genital / bum region in between showers.

I'm pretty sure I don’t smell.

I’m sorry but that’s gross 3 days without even a flannel wash as you can’t be arsed! Scuse the pun !

Why do you think you don't smell though?

But you poo everyday. And wipe with (presumably) just dry toilet paper.

Are you smearing poop everywhere though? Healthy bowel movement has a clean break and no smear on the toilet paper you wipe with.

Are you going around sniffing peoples arses?

I shower 1 to 2 times a day because I work out but I do not believe people smell if they shower every other day. And if I do catch a whiff of someone, its more a bed smell or sweat and I don't think your average person would smell like that after not showering for 48 hours.

Tbh, I wish I would showered less. Its another thing people do without considering the impact on the environment. Not just water, but energy consumption, product consumption, manufacturing etc

SnowFrogJelly · 27/04/2025 09:20

You don’t need to shower every day.. waste of water

My deodorant claims to last 96 hours!
I wonder if some people forget they only apply deodorant to their underarms and end up stinking from other areas...

Where else should put deodorant?

Neemie · 27/04/2025 09:22

I shower twice a day but I do quite a bit of exercise and use public transport. I like to go to bed clean and I wash my hair in the morning.

Don’t agree with this.. many things eaten on a healthy diet, aubergine, spinach for example give me plenty of smears on the paper sorry if tmi

No, but not washing your bum everyday is a bit rank. Even dermatologists recommend washing genitals and pits daily due to the bacteria build up. Showering isn't necessary. Washing off bacteria in high frequency areas is.

ComtesseDeSpair · 27/04/2025 09:25

I find it weirder tbh when people say they don’t shower every day but do have a flannel wash. I do the latter when wild camping and it’s much more of a faff and time consuming fannying about with separate flannels and splashing water around than it is to jump under running water for a minute.

Beyond that I’m not particularly invested. I don’t notice that many stinky people, but often go to the supermarket immediately after a run so am probably one of them sometimes.

BlondiePortz · 27/04/2025 09:25

To me it is quicker to shower every day than it is to wash bits so i just do it

Bullshit (Haha! Worse than human presumably). Poo contains bacteria obviously. And this grows the longer it's left. Hence causing a smell.

I know in some cultures they wash after using the toilet, rather than using paper. But a dry wipe? Bacteria remains.

outlanderish · 27/04/2025 09:26

Every day without fail. Unless I'm incredibly unwell, but even then I make the effort to shower. I smell when I wake up in the morning. I don't know how people then proceed to go about their day without washing. Their bits must stink 🤢

Yes and some people, me, have different shape bowels, just the way we're made which means that happens.

But to answer OP, yes I shower every day, I dont feel clean if not, I wouldnt put clean underwear on. Nothing wrong with not showering every day if you dont have a shower or want to, but people should wash every day in my view.

You probably cross paths with many people who don't shower daily and you won't be able to tell.

TheAmusedQuail · 27/04/2025 09:28

@ComtesseDeSpair, nah, a flannel wash takes me about a minute and half (and that's with a double soaping of the nethers). I can get fully ready in under 10 mins to include wash, teeth, hair brush, minimal makeup and making a cup of tea (would rather do a super-fast sprint and have an extra 15 mins in bed).

soupyspoon · 27/04/2025 09:28

And also everything and every one has a smell. People seem to be using the word smell as a negative thing.

We all have a smell.

Yes, I accept this. I think there are levels of cleanliness. Mine isn't as high now as it used to be. But I draw the line at not doing the smelliest bits daily. Clean bits, clean underwear, clean teeth.

OllyBJolly · 27/04/2025 08:41

Growing up in the 60s and 70s and possibly into the 80, it wasn't usual to have showers in houses in my demographic (inner city council housing, then new town council housing). As children, we had a bath once a week, using the same water, priority based on age. (TF I was second oldest of 5). I don't recall either parent having many baths.

We did have showers at secondary school for after PE. Communal and always cold so not a lot of cleansing went on.

I don't remember smelly people then but maybe the fag reek hid it all....

I bet that you …like me…thought Avon pretty peach was the height of luxury. I still do!

QueefQueen80s · 27/04/2025 09:31

Cakencookieobsessed · 27/04/2025 08:26

It's not obsessive to shower every day. We're human, we sweat, have sex and go to the toilet. I'd hope at least they were washing their face, underarms, genitals and arse.

This! I can definitely tell when people don’t wash. Unwashed hair smells. We are human, we pee, shit, sweat, period, discharge, fart, eat, share germs with other members of the public, get smells on us from vehicles and places we go, dead skin etc etc.
If someone really can’t bathe/shower for a period of time then as long as they have a thorough flannel wash at the sink, use dry shampoo etc

Sadcafe · 27/04/2025 09:32

I could count on one hand how many showers I have a year, never liked them, much prefer a bath, I know it uses more water but just can’t get away with showers. Do agree though that more and more people seem not to use either

Greenartywitch · 27/04/2025 09:32

I take the bus regularly and there are always people, men and women of all ages, who really smell which makes the journey incredibly unpleasant. Yesterday I went into a high street shop and again there was a young couple who absolutely stank. They wore trendy clothes and looked fine but had awful BO to the point that I had to leave the shop. I have worked with colleagues who very obviously did not wash regularly and everyone else in the office had to put up with the smell of their sweat and unwashed hair.

It is completely anti-social to force you poor hygiene habits on other people. A shower a day as far as I am concerned is a basic necessity We all sweat, have bodily fluids and so on.

People who think they don't need to shower regular but still smell of roses are just deluding themselves.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 27/04/2025 09:32

On the (rare) days where I go without showering I don't wash anything except my hands and face.

The Mitchum antiperspirants do actually work for at least 48 hours as long as it's not too warm and you're not exercising or otherwise exerting yourself. But even those have their limits. I have my doubts about the ones that claim to last longer than that.
