'I don't shower every day'

When someone states they don't shower every day would you assume they are washing the important bits on the days they are not showering or would you think they are completely unwashed on those days?
Going off the BO wafting around in the shops yesterday I would assume most people are not washing inbetween showering!

I think even if they shower every morning, some people after a long day at work and a hot crowded tube journey are still going to whiff a bit, so imo it's nothing to do with not showering every day

Sorrelbird · 27/04/2025 09:36

People are so judgmental over this. Just because you stink if you miss a shower doesn’t mean I do.

I know that's the irony here. The obsessive washers are naturally smelly people just doing a good job at masking.

Moanycowbag · 27/04/2025 10:15

I'd take a slightly naturally whiffy body smell over the god awful stench of fabric softeners.

doodahdayy · 27/04/2025 09:38

Yes I find this weird. I assume water is freely available for most households now, it’s not 1950 where you had to share a bath a week. The only people I know who still strip wash are older. I still feel grimy if I have to strip wash

Not everyone has the funds to run a 10kw electric shower every day. Or the gas to run the boiler for hot water.

It’s often cheaper to run two bowls of hot water and strip wash thoroughly.

And to use biodegradable baby/toilet wipes after each pop/wee.

Also older skin is dryer, lax and more friable so more easily torn. Better to wash down properly and not strip skin of its natural oils.
No reason to have BO tho.

TheAmusedQuail · 27/04/2025 09:07

But you poo everyday. And wipe with (presumably) just dry toilet paper.

I don’t shower every day and I don’t poo ever day? In fact I probably shower more frequently than I poo? (I do both every 2-3 days, and don’t generally need to wash every day. I have a husband who points out if I do, and that’s quite rare).

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 27/04/2025 10:20

TheAmusedQuail · 27/04/2025 09:58

Definitely. But you're not dragging with kitchen sink/toilet/bin and their smell around with you into public areas.

I don't want to be the one who smells in the office. But you do you.

I don't smell in the office. It's very rare that I go without a shower, and when I do, it's on days when I am not planning to leave the house.

If your colleagues smell, I very much doubt it is their arsehole you can smell. (Not unless you work in the adult film industry anyway.) It's more likely to be their clothes.

You say that as if it is a bad thing?
If I am naturally smelly and you can't smell me because I shower daily and use an appropriate deodorant surely that's a win.

Or would you prefer to sit next to me for 8 hours in a hot and stuffy office when I hadn't showered for days or bothered with deodorant to mask my stench?

Why would you not shower everyday?

Because it's not always necessary. I don't really sweat and don't need underarm deodorant (no I don't smell!). Showering every two or three days is totally fine for some people. Others who naturally are more sweaty /smelly or who do dirty or manual work may need more frequent. People are different.

Waitingfordoggo · 27/04/2025 10:24

The only thing I would assume is that the person knows how to look after their own body and it’s none of my business.

Some people do not smell despite washing infrequently, some people smell despite washing frequently. Other people’s washing regimes are absolutely none of my business.

SipandClean · 27/04/2025 10:26

iseethembloom · 27/04/2025 09:05

I shower every other day or sometimes every third day and I don’t wash my armpits or genital / bum region in between showers.

I'm pretty sure I don’t smell.

Delightful.

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/04/2025 10:32

TheHerboriste · 27/04/2025 09:57

Exactly. Using a nasty flannel while standing at the basin instead of just hopping in and washing thoroughly in the same amount of time?? Why?? It’s truly baffling.

To save water (which if metered you pay for as you use it), to save fuel costs, to save your whole body getting wet when it doesn't need to? Honestly, it's not difficult, I'm baffled you find it baffling.

In the winter I shower every other day but I do have a routine for the important little places and wish we had a bidet. In summer, if it's hot, then every day.

MyKingdomForACat · 27/04/2025 10:32

I shower and wash my hair every day whether I’m leaving the house or not. I don’t want to put clean clothes on an unclean body. It wouldn’t feel right. That’s just my preference

Dragonfly97 · 27/04/2025 10:36

I've noticed this; i wonder if it's linked to poverty though? Obviously water & electricity prices have risen like everything else, some vulnerable people are struggling with costs, which can spiral into depression, and lack of motivation to shower etc. It's not nice to smell B.O in public places but I have sympathy for people who just can't afford the basics. For some people there just isn't the money to spare to heat the water etc.

TheHerboriste · 27/04/2025 10:37

People who think they don’t smell may be kidding themselves. Google “nose blindness.”

soupyspoon · 27/04/2025 10:37

Sickofschoolruns · 27/04/2025 09:39

I had a colleague that claimed she showered twice a day and thought it was disgusting if people did not. If you used the toilet after her there was a fusty smell. I always wondered if actually she was causing issues by using soap in that area so regularly and actually the people that obsessively shower and use soap in those areas so often don't realise that others do not have the same issues they do.

Edited

There is a medical condition that can cause a fusty or musty smell about someone, theres nothing they can do about it.

Mareleine · 27/04/2025 10:40

I think the new BO smell everywhere comes from those new deodorants. A PP said this as well but I've lost them to quote. The "all natural" aluminium free deodorants last a couple of hours then you stink worse than if you'd used nothing. I tried one once and after the first use I was straight back to my trusty Mitchum that lasts until my next shower (and I shower every 24-48 hours). I think they're responsible for the epidemic of smells atm.

I do also think that there's an element of people's noses becoming over-sensitised to normal human smells. In Vietnam the Vietkong tracked down the Americans effectively by following the smell of deodorant/soap as it's so strong to people who don't use it ever. I feel sorry for dogs having to put up with us and our artificial smells. It stands to reason that those who surround themselves in the smell of shower gel 1-2 times a day, deodorant for in between showers, perfume etc have a more sensitive nose for human smells (and I include myself in this to some extent).

LucyMonth · 27/04/2025 10:42

I think by the time you’ve soaped up and rinsed your pits, tits & bits you might as well have just jumped in the bloody shower so what’s the point?

bugaboo218 · 27/04/2025 10:46

I shower twice a day in the morning and again before bed. Hair washed every other day.

A shower takes me two minutes.

Also clean underwear ( knickers changed twice a day, clean bra and clean socks daily) Clean pjs / nightie every night and clean teeshirt/ vest top every day.

Deodorant applied twice a day. I do not believe all the hype that a deodorant can keep you fresh for 48/72 hours.

Arm pits, bottoms, feet and vagina need to be washed thoroughly each day. And as for people, who only wash their genitals with water- that is disgusting- water alone will not kill bacteria.

doodahdayy · 27/04/2025 10:47

@askmenowunderstandable if there is skin tearing to wash less. Ouch! Biodegradable wipes arent great for the environment especially if thrown in with other rubbish as will likely remain for hundreds of years if squashed in other stuff. Plush these so called flushable wipes are terrible.

Cmon you know that is excessive.

soupyspoon · 27/04/2025 10:49

I think people dont understand about bacteria either, we all have bacteria all over us, all the time. Not sure that people understand that when you wash you're not washing 'bacteria off'.

And people clearly dont understand about water cycles, there is no 'wasted water'. We are generally a wet country, we dont suffer significant or genuine drought. We may have an issue with water distribution but thats a different thing. We also pay shit loads in costs for clean water.

Showering is not 'wasting' water. Its using the water we have abundant in this country.

The earth has no more and no less water in and on and around it, than it did when it was created/came about.

bugaboo218 · 27/04/2025 10:49

It may appear to excessive to some, but it's my personal preference.

Buzyizzy217 · 27/04/2025 08:17

I don’t get this obsessive showering every day unless you have a dirty or really manual job. Obviously summer days when everyone is a bit sweaty is different, but the amount of water we waste with this is ridiculous. Same with clothes washing. It’s absolutely not necessary. What does worry me tho are these deodorants that claim to last 72 hours. 🥺

I shower every day because I exercise every day.

Buzyizzy217 · 27/04/2025 10:55

You don’t know that. You’re completely judging him. Poor man. There may have been a perfectly good reason. Jeez! Not judgemental at all are you?

BumbleBeegu · 27/04/2025 10:55

Moanycowbag · 27/04/2025 09:39

I blame the new natural deodorants, I have one and it leaves me stinking after an hour or two, and the not washing hair, dirty hair smells worse than BO

Agree about the smell of dirty hair…I didn’t realise that this was ‘a thing’ until last weekend. I’d been really ill since Thursday, in bed two days, no energy at all. Last shower was Wednesday before work, but I did manage the old ‘baby wipe wash’ of my bits when I went to the loo (all I could manage 😢)

I didn’t shower until the Sunday morning, when I finally had a bit of strength. As the water was running over my hair I caught a whiff of some god awful smell…I was horrified when I realised it was my bloody hair!!

Thank god I live alone!
