Paying for someone else's disgusting behaviour

DH and I went to a big birthday party for a dear friend.
Towards the end of the night 2 men decided they wanted to
have a fight (don't know these men or why they had a fight)
A few of the tables and lots of glasses were broken.
The venue had to call the police as it was getting out of hand.

Today the hostess received a bill from the venue to pay for the damage.
She has now asked for all the guests to put money towards the payment.
(£20 per person) There was about 100 people there.
I don't think we should be paying this. Surely it's these men that pay or
the hostess as it was her guests that caused the problems.

I've not replied yet as I don't know what to say.

OP posts:

£20 a head that’s £2000 she will get doubt that the damage will come to that.

excelledyourself · 19/04/2025 19:37

How has she contacted everyone? Surely those two men are mortified to know that everyone else at the party has been asked to fork out?

Has she actually contacted every guest, or just those she thinks might pay?

She’s a close friend. You can’t just ignore her, but keep it brief and do not pay.

Miaowzabella · 19/04/2025 19:38

No way. The venue should have insurance in any event.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 19/04/2025 19:40

I feel sorry for her, what a mess, but this was not an all guest issue. Definitely don’t pay!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/04/2025 19:42

CF indeed !

The venue will have insurance to cover.
Police will hopefully charge the two men and the courts can recoup damages .

She is out of order asking other guests to pay

MayaPinion · 19/04/2025 19:42

Ignore ignore ignore. Don’t engage. Hardly anyone will reply so she’ll lean on the ones that do. It’s not your circus and not your monkeys.

MsFogi · 19/04/2025 19:43

That is one hell of a total bill for damage - either she is a CF looking to profit from the situation or she has only contacted the friends she thinks are an easy touch to pay. Either way OP, don't pay.

The fucking gall of some people

BlackBean2023 · 19/04/2025 19:43

The venue will have insurance they can claim on. The men who caused the damage should be liable to pay victim surcharge if they are charged.

your dear friend is a cheeky fucker.

This ^

Why on Earth would the guests that behaved have to pay for a couple of pricks who can’t handle their drink?

Id ask her if she has been smoking crack?

CreationNat1on · 19/04/2025 19:49

The debt is the responsibility of the wrongdoer.

Are they all quite rough?

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 19/04/2025 19:50

She's taking the p.

JojoM1981 · 19/04/2025 19:50

No!! That's what insurance is for.

MadamCholetsbonnet · 19/04/2025 19:51

Just ignore.

JoshLymanSwagger · 19/04/2025 19:56

She needs to pass the bill on to the two blokes who caused the damage.

InMyOpenOnion · 19/04/2025 19:56

I would ignore it in the first instance. It sounds like something she's fired off whilst still stressed, and may well have already realised how ridiculous it is. You'll hopefully hear no more about it.

Energe · 19/04/2025 19:58

No. The twats can pay

BoredZelda · 19/04/2025 19:58

This is perfect. I would send this

This is not perfect it is weak and flouncy. The woman having the temerity to ask other guests for the costs should not be handled with kid gloves and flowery sweet language.

What’s perfect is an outright No.

The venue needs to keep their costs down just as everyone else does. The customers who caused the damage need to pay. I suspect what had happened is, they asked for a deposit to cover any damage and now it isn’t being returned.

Catlady63 · 19/04/2025 20:01

The venue should cover this from their own insurance, otherwise the two fools who had the fight. Crazy to ask other guests to pay!

RickiRaccoon · 19/04/2025 20:02

Ignore it. It's not your issue. She can take it up with the two guests that caused the damage if needed.

It is a no, you’d be doing mental gymnastics to read otherwise.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 19/04/2025 20:04

how cheeky !

"I know you must be really disappointed to be hit with a bill for damages but the hotel or you should be pursing the brawlers. I didn't contribute to the damage so I'm sure you'll understand I won't be contributing to the repairs".

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 19/04/2025 20:05

@BoredZelda I think you are spot on!
