So the recent thread resoundingly in favour of frozen mash made me buy some… and yes Mumsnet is quite correct.. totally converted. Which got be wondering what else have I missed?
My frozen foods are just the usual chips, peas and fishfingers. What other game changers are out there?

Broccoli simply doesn't freeze well. There's no such thing as good frozen broccoli. And yes, why do you not use some fresh vegetables rather than living on frozen peas? I'm a super lazy cook, but popping some fresh broccoli into boiling water is little different from putting frozen veg in. And it keeps in the fridge for ages if its wrapped.

Yeah i'm not fan of frozen broccoli either , fine in a stirfry or pasta bake, but eaten as a side, i've got to have fresh. I also hate frozen carrots. They're only fine in soffrito mix.

This post reminded me to get those 4 x frozen jacket potatoes - (I mean 4 x spuds, not frozen 4 times!). Yes they are a bit dry but by the time I have smothered them in butter and cheese they are ok!

Deathraystare · 28/05/2025 18:01

Does anyone remember the Kerry gold frozen cream sticks? Always handy Christmas time. I don't think they do them now. I used to pinch some out of the freezer.......

I wonder why they were discontinued?
Always useful to have in the freezer.

zenas · 28/05/2025 18:36

IME frozen broccoli and cauli need to be steamed not boiled/simmered. I steam mine and they turn out fine.

I use a lot of frozen fruit for breakfast on top of greek yogurt. I usually blitz blueberries raspberries, strawberries, and leave in a fridge box that has a basket to let the juice out, then I drink that!

Just bung a load into bake, cool a d freeze. They'll be better.

nahthatsnotforme · 28/05/2025 22:23

So I have tried several of these, so thankyou.
Frozen mash… will never be without it
Parathas.. yes they’re delish, but too pastryish to replace naan as my bread of choice to have with a curry. I completely see why you would have with jam, but I’m not going to go there
Diced onions I will buy once I’ve used the onions I already have
Soffrito I already use

some great ideas. Thank you.

We lived on those! One cylinder made a litre of orange juice and it was our main drink as kids. Frozen concentrated Florida orange juice.

Well, that and the litre drums of apple juice that you’d make two holes in so it would pour without glugging.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 29/05/2025 22:58

I have a fabulous recipe for an orange ice cream made using the concentrated orange juice. So sad we can’t get it anymore.

Garlic, ginger, croissants, pain au chocolat, Swedish meatballs......

Yes and you can get mini croissants in the freezer section of supermarkets.

This is great with some frozen prawns mixed in, both Aldi

https://www.aldi.ie/product/ready-set-cook-beef-burrito-ready-meal-000000000597068001

Bags of frozen berries and frozen kale cubes in Aldi also to throw into smoothies, mix in some boiling water to soften, then add milk and honey, delicious

Ooh frozen kale cubes sounds like something I might want to add to stews and beans too.

Exactly this! We don't bother with Naan bread anymore. We just buy a massive family pack of frozen Paratha (sold in every major supermarket) and fry one as we need it. Way better than naan, more economical & make a great quick lunch with leftover curry. Or even a snack if you fry one and stick some yogurt/mango on a plate in a pinch!

I haven't bought fresh onion, fresh garlic, fresh blueberries or fresh cherries in years (Morrisons!)

My recent discovery is the diced beef in Morrisons. A couple of bags in the freezer v handy for a quick stew or chilli.

Frozen broccoli, great to make a last minute guilt free pasta for the kids.

Thanks for this. I love Paratha.

Can you get frozen bolognaise anywhere?

As in, just the mince, tomato, onion mix etc. to mix with pasta, add potato on top etc.

CatteryCatz · 29/05/2025 23:20

I really like these, which I get from Home Bargains.

I could make them myself, but having them in the freezer helps on the days where I have little energy.

I freeze all my cheese - feta, grated cheddar, parmesan.

Frozen grapes.

Dark chocolate in the freezer.

Smoked salmon (cut a pack in half), smoked mackarel.

Chicken breast wrapped in parma ham, optional asparagus, wrapped in baking paper

Discounted houmous frozen.

Frozen dates - just discovered these are really nice chopped and frozen.

CigarettesAndLoveBites · 30/05/2025 12:09

Aldi hash browns. Just like McDs.

BambinaCucina · 05/02/2026 16:25

I know this is a super old thread but just wanted to add that frozen broccoli is absolutely fine for roasting with some oil and salt. It comes out perfectly. Just roast it till it starts to char.

I wouldn't have it as a boiled/steamed side, but nice like this. Likewise frozen cauliflower. Frozen cauliflower makes a decent cauliflower cheese without having to blanch first.

Did you hear that there are forever chemicals in baking paper? I was horrified to hear that!

Frozen chapattis and parathas. Just a minute or two in a frying pan and they taste amazing. A million times better than shop bought naan breads, which always seen really dry.

Where are you getting these from????

Any supermarket has them, look in the Asian / world food section of the freezers. They're usually with the pakoras, frozen garlic and okra etc

Costco handmade garlic naans are also very good. 10 big ones for about £4.50. They come in 2 packs of 5 and will last a few days after opening in the fridge, but in keeping with the thread, I cut them into pieces, freeze and then reheat in the toaster so DP wonders why his morning toast tastes of garlic.
