What other brilliant frozen food have I missed?

So the recent thread resoundingly in favour of frozen mash made me buy some… and yes Mumsnet is quite correct.. totally converted. Which got be wondering what else have I missed?
My frozen foods are just the usual chips, peas and fishfingers. What other game changers are out there?

Also, go to a local Chinese supermarket and find their dim sum 😄

I absolutely love Delia, @Deathraystare . She’s due a revival! Or someone like her with no nonsense recipes for basics that explain how you do it ALL instead of assuming you just know basic things and techniques. And I LOVE to have decent family friendly recipes using shortcuts like frozen mash, frozen chopped onions, cans of mushroom soup etc!

i couldn’t boil eggs, and thanks to Delia they’re prefect every time now.

Absolutely!

MoonWoman69 · 18/04/2025 13:19

@Soosi Farm Foods do big 20 packs of frozen paratha, they are lovely!

Namechange6578 · 18/04/2025 14:06

Has anyone else tried the Hula Hoops potato rings from food warehouse? My DH picked some up for the kids recently and they are very moreish!

Her entire cookery school is free online, complete with videos, sequenced lessons and courses plus all the basic techniques. I remember reading some years ago that she was putting part of her fortune into making it a free resource. You can buy cookware etc if you choose but you don’t need to pay anything to use the lessons and recipes.

Some of her older books show their age in choice of ingredients and she isn’t the best on vegetarian food but she is definitely the best on teaching all the basics and techniques.

Thanks ecocool.

Garlic, ginger, croissants, pain au chocolat, Swedish meatballs......

Ooh, where do you get frozen Swedish meatballs from & do they taste the same as Ikea?

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 18/04/2025 18:40

Can anyone tell me where they are getting the frozen pearl onions from please? Thank you.

AdaColeman · 18/04/2025 19:00

@WowIlikereallyhateyou
Frozen pearl onions from Picard (French frozen foods) at Ocado.

They are awful, really dry! Is this the same friend?! I was recommended them too 🤯

I cook mine in the oven from frozen rather than microwaving first, come out lovely not dry in the slightest !

Aussiegold · 18/04/2025 20:06

@shantayyoustaysashayaway get them in Tesco in the frozen section, company called Smorgasbord! I use their recipe for the sauce, which is basically a roux but made with beef stock (just use a stock cube) with cream added.

Sauce also freezes well and I think ghe meatballs microwave in about 2 minutes, nice quick meal!

Soosi · 18/04/2025 21:31

No Asda either. Only Tesco and Sainsburys.

Frozen, pre chopped garlic and onions have been a life changing investment for us! Saves so much time and effort, no smelly fingers and no having to constantly rebuy fresh produce when they inevitably go off.

Completely agree! Frozen veg is more nutritious than ‘fresh’ and much less waste.

RabbitsRock · 19/04/2025 08:35

A lot of Iceland stuff is great. Plus they have brands like Greggs, TGIF etc. Cathedral City cauliflower cheese is to die for! I like Iceland meals in a bag. The creamy cheesy chicken, broccoli & pea pasta is lovely & stir fries from frozen in 15 minutes. I also like some of the Farm Foods products. Their crispy duck strips are really good.

I’m actually a bit of a frozen veg hater to be honest! I just buy my garlic & onions frozen for convenience. The rest isn’t worth the sacrifice in texture/taste for me - frozen broccoli in particular is awful imo

I've tried lots of frozen veg, & most of it is very disappointing.
I stick to petit pois, baby broad beans (no peeling !), & shallots.

If you want frozen ikea meatballs to have at home you could just buy them from the grocery bit at the exit.

Cheaper too as you get a big bag for the price of a portion in the restaurant. And they have the gravy.

Agreed… a lot go soggy and the texture is wrong. Carrots are some of the worst for this. I used to have frozen broccoli all the time and then went for fresh - and the difference was so big, I never went back to frozen. My kids also will eat fresh broccoli but not frozen.
