What other brilliant frozen food have I missed?

So the recent thread resoundingly in favour of frozen mash made me buy some… and yes Mumsnet is quite correct.. totally converted. Which got be wondering what else have I missed?
My frozen foods are just the usual chips, peas and fishfingers. What other game changers are out there?

I know this is a diversion but I've been longing to tell someone that this is the bomb!!!!

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 14/04/2025 18:56

Frozen spinach is useful for chucking into pasta and curries.

My friend raves about frozen jacket potatoes. Not sure if she buys McCain or just any old supermarket brand ones.

I haven't tried them so no idea if they're as fabulous as she says.

I use the frozen ones but they are better finished off in the oven with whatever is cooking in there - makes them nice and crispy on the outside...

Celeriac, cos it's such a shit to prepare. And Greggs pasties.

Where do you get frozen celeriac from & do they do frozen fennel as well by any chance? 🤞🏽

Where do you get frozen pearl onions from?! 😍

I get mine from farm foods, I use them in Stifado.

A head of celery happily sits in the salad drawer for a month.

Even longer if you wrap it completely in tinfoil. It's incredible how long it lasts...

LushLemonTart · 14/04/2025 20:13

Aldi Indian inspired vegetable nests. Just cooked them in air fryer for 15 minutes. Like onion bhaji but healthier. I made a mint yoghurt chutney to go with it.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 14/04/2025 20:39

@LushLemonTart they are amazing as are most of Aldi plant and vegetarian menu foods the cheese and spring onion crisp bakes are divine like the best large potato croquette ever and the vegan sausage rolls are the best of all

I would buy that as well. Delia's slow cooked celeriac and celery soups is one of my Winter regulars but I really struggle with the celeriac prep.

In general for anyone cooking for one most or all of the time all the frozen single fruit and veg bags are a boon to save waste when cooking. Picard frozen artichokes are great if you like artichokes. Picard is generally a reliable frozen range if you want the occasional ready meal or reasonable frozen croissants (and macarons are not bad either 😀). I also cook and freeze some grains and pulses in order to take out a portion or so at a time.

There are some veg which I really only like fresh - cauli and broccoli for example but I eat enough of those that none is wasted anyway.

I can’t buy that, it lasts me about 20 mins BlushGrin

Frozen mince! It comes in little tiny pieces so
you Don’t have to cut it and or seperate it like fresh mince, it gives a really good consistency!

This might be a game changer for me having spent a lot of time today browning/breaking up the new lower plastic mince pack. Understand the plastic issue but goodness it's more work!

LushLemonTart · 14/04/2025 23:06

@NeilDiamondsBlowDry I'll try them too. Can't believe how good the vegetables nests were.

That's one frozen food I just cannot get away with. I find it gritty, and don't like all of the uniform little bits, and prefer fresh. I love Lidl steak beef mince.
It is highly subjective though, and each to their own. No right or wrong.

Hi. Where can I buy frozen chapattis and parathas please.

bungobungobungo · 17/04/2025 22:44

I bought some chappattis from Sainsbury’s in the very first section of the frozen food. Can’t say I was all that impressed to be honest!

Hi. Where can I buy frozen chapattis and parathas please.

Look in the "world food" section of the freezers. We get the Riya brand ones.

frozen croissants Aldi ones are lovely - put in ninja air fryer 170 for 15mins on bake . If you want a treat then Tesco have the pret frozen croissant taste exactly like the shop ones

Hi. Where can I buy frozen chapattis and parathas please.

I get mine from Morrisons. They have garlic, vegetable and plain as far as I know. May have others.

I’m sorry, there’s decent frozen mash?
Can you tell me the brand please? I have a cooked portion of cottage pie filling in the freezer I can’t take to work because I can’t be bothered to make mash for one, & don’t eat mash with anything else.

Years ago Saint Delia (Smith) used it in her recipes.I am willing to bet the shop freezers were emptied of frozen mash very quickly after that! I used to use it all the time.

ShockedandStunnedRepeatedly · 18/04/2025 08:02

I absolutely love Delia, @Deathraystare . She’s due a revival! Or someone like her with no nonsense recipes for basics that explain how you do it ALL instead of assuming you just know basic things and techniques. And I LOVE to have decent family friendly recipes using shortcuts like frozen mash, frozen chopped onions, cans of mushroom soup etc!

i couldn’t boil eggs, and thanks to Delia they’re prefect every time now.
