What other brilliant frozen food have I missed?

So the recent thread resoundingly in favour of frozen mash made me buy some… and yes Mumsnet is quite correct.. totally converted. Which got be wondering what else have I missed?
My frozen foods are just the usual chips, peas and fishfingers. What other game changers are out there?

Tesco sell plain , spring onion and garlic Humza parathra.
They are all nice .

We’ve switched from Humza to Shana (also from Tesco). Better ingredients and much less greasy.

Where do you buy this pls?

Usually Morrisons. Asda sell it too and Ocado. Not sure about elsewhere as they are my usual shops.

Quite a lot of fat and salt, does it taste very salty?

Are definitely not under seasoned, but not obviously fatty. I have them in as a "sod it I don't want to cook" tasty option.

deeahgwitch · 14/04/2025 07:57

Frozen cherries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries leave to defrost overnight on porridge oats with some apple juice. Very tasty breakfast.

Any veg where the fresh version goes off easily. Broccoli, cauliflower, etc.

Sorry but frozen versions of these veg are only good for soup

NetZeroZealot · 14/04/2025 08:49

Has anyone made home made mashed potatoes and successfully frozen them. I’ve got a bit of a potato glut at the moment

Where do you get frozen soffrito?

I've only seen it in M&S. interested to know if it's available elsewhere.

Waitrose have it too.

Their frozen shallots are also decent.

I use frozen veg for curries when I don’t have any fresh. Not got the fresh crunch but perfectly fine in a curry.

Morrisons have a very good and interesting selection of fish, near the fish counter but frozen on a 3 for £10 offer including things like razor clams and breaded calamari that is far better than anything else pre-prepared that's available (Young's etc). They started to buy a lot of the fish and seafood that couldn't be economically exported after Brexit and sell it this way.

Has anyone mentioned edamame beans?

If you're looking to get the most out of your freezer, keeping space for reductions, especially meat if you eat it is also another way to save. Buy reduced meat or economy packs/special offers and freeze in meal size portions, so works out much cheaper than full price fresh meat in smaller packs. If you have one near by, some farm shops sell freezer packs that work out cheaper than smaller quantities (half a lamb etc).

Lunaballoon · 14/04/2025 13:11

I tried the Aldi cauliflower cheese at the weekend based on the recommendations on here. I was a bit sceptical but actually quite impressed. A good freezer stand-by for when you need a vegetable accompaniment and you can’t be arsed to make from scratch.

Debzyrobinson · 14/04/2025 15:03

Jacket potatoes are very healthy and you can have, cheese, beans, colsaw .

Mostly agree. Very easy soup with these, potatoes and onion. Then cheese/cream.

I also make a cross between a cauliflower cheese and gratin, which DC wolf down. They will also eat the broccoli on the side with a load of dishes. Just makes it easy to add to many more meals. I buy large bags of the organic version of each.

Do agree that the fresh versions are much nicer.

It's called Base Mix in the other supermarkets - they don't give it the posh name! It's the sane thing.

Aah I’ll take a look. I bet they’re cheaper too. Not the biggest fan of Waitrose anyway!

Final word on frozen mash....bought some from Sainsbury's yesterday, put the little lego-brick bits in dish in microwave (added butter and pepper when done) to have with meat pie and.....it was scrummy! As good as home made so just been back to get another bag. Thank you to all who recommended this one, Sainsbury's own brand 🤗

Wow, I've always been a bit of a mashed potato snob, likening frozen mash to smash! I'm definitely going to give this a go! One of my DCs is always asking for mash, and we don't have it much, so this will be really handy to have in. Oh and a topping for cottage pie!

Soosi · 14/04/2025 17:45

Duck fat roast potatoes are great. Aldi or Sainsburys.

Yes, we did that when we had loads of potatoes. Froze in scoops in bags, making sure to squeeze the air out.

Can I ask what do you do with edamame beans in cooking? I’ve only ever had them raw from the pod

violetqueen6 · 14/04/2025 18:44

@NetZeroZealot I think I've read that adding cream cheese before freezing ensures a good taste.
I have tried this and would agree.

Drummergirl1971 · 14/04/2025 18:45

Can confirm. Chopped frozen onions are a game changer

Drummergirl1971 · 14/04/2025 18:47

Where do you get frozen pearl onions from?! 😍

Cuwins · 14/04/2025 18:50

I wish I had a bigger freezer. I would love to be able to use the frozen chopped onion, garlic, herbs base mix etc. We only have a fridge freezer with 2.5 drawers unfortunately so very little room.
I do get frozen spinach and diced butternut squash to put in slow cooker curries
