What other brilliant frozen food have I missed?

So the recent thread resoundingly in favour of frozen mash made me buy some… and yes Mumsnet is quite correct.. totally converted. Which got be wondering what else have I missed?
My frozen foods are just the usual chips, peas and fishfingers. What other game changers are out there?

How do you cook frozen onions? It went very badly when I tried it!

Agreed… a lot go soggy and the texture is wrong. Carrots are some of the worst for this. I used to have frozen broccoli all the time and then went for fresh - and the difference was so big, I never went back to frozen. My kids also will eat fresh broccoli but not frozen.

It's okay if you're going to just bung it in soups and blend it ,but yeah, mush!

PomegranateVase · 20/04/2025 09:59

Gyoza.

I always have at least one bag in the freezer. They’re perfect to throw into a simple Japanese soup base, or to stir fry with some noodles and vegetables for a quick and healthy dinner.

Frozen chapattis and parathas. Just a minute or two in a frying pan and they taste amazing. A million times better than shop bought naan breads, which always seen really dry.

Sorry for ridiculously late response, but I just bought some of these and they are amazing. Didn't know they existed before, so thank you 😁

bigraspberry · 23/04/2025 20:58

Morrisons cheese cauliflower . I just do it in microwave.

I picked up the parathas, going to give them a try this week

Mydadsbirthday · 24/04/2025 21:47

Unfortunately the Shana parathas are very high in fat. Delicious though

drspouse · 24/04/2025 22:03

Can anyone recommend meatballs that are not like the IKEA/Swedish style ones? More home made/less salty?
I made some lovely ones last night that were half lamb, half pork, with onion, garlic and herbs, ideal for an Italian sauce, but they are a faff to make. Fresh ones seem to be just meat (also a faff to cook).

They are delicious especially for breakfast with jam.
I had to stop being them They're very calorific too.

Providing the meat hasn't been previously frozen, you could make a large quantity & freeze the surplus.
I normally freeze it in lump/s, so I can make either balls or burgers later.

I’m sorry, there’s decent frozen mash?
Can you tell me the brand please? I have a cooked portion of cottage pie filling in the freezer I can’t take to work because I can’t be bothered to make mash for one, & don’t eat mash with anything else.

Based on a recommendation on here I tried the frozen mash from Sainsburys and it's brilliant. It comes in little bars so you can just take out what you need, I love it on toast with cheese on top then grilled. Fab!

drspouse · 26/05/2025 17:44

Can anyone recommend a not horrible frozen broccoli?
We tend to have peas all the time because they are good frozen but everyone likes broccoli.

Can't you get fresh?

Broccoli simply doesn't freeze well. There's no such thing as good frozen broccoli. And yes, why do you not use some fresh vegetables rather than living on frozen peas? I'm a super lazy cook, but popping some fresh broccoli into boiling water is little different from putting frozen veg in. And it keeps in the fridge for ages if its wrapped.

LushLemonTart · 27/05/2025 08:18

Steaming broccoli is easy too. Keeps more vitamins in.

We do use fresh broccoli but it runs out before we go shopping!

Deathraystare · 27/05/2025 08:56

I often used frozen spinach, simply because it used to upset me how much fresh spinach I had to use (for one portion size!) and it cooks down to nothing! All that bother!

I only use frozen sprouts in desperation. They are soggy!!

I have used the frozen jacket spuds. As someone posted they are not great but once I overload them with butter and cheese they are ok!!

Used to get the big Yorkshire puds - the single one and bung roasted veg or veggie bangers and gravy in it!

Also like the frozen pie mixture - very versatile - for pies, paella, in pasta and rice etc.

Tried these on the back of this thread. Can confirm they are delicious! They taste more or less like croissant pastry (at least, the plain ones we tried did). And are much the same calorie wise - each paratha is 274kcal, about the same as the larger all butter croissants.

IKEA frozen frankfurters and frozen cinnamon buns.

Gosh I remember the frozen cinnamon buns! I had them once!

I would imagine that Saint Delia used Sainsbury's frozen mash. Remember when she did that??!!

MoistVonL · 27/05/2025 09:18

Frozen mash was a revelation!

As soon as the nights draw in DP goes on a meat and potatoes bender for 4 months. I prefer pasta or rice, so now we have frozen mash for him and I batch cook and portion rice for the freezer for me.

Yes, so much better than frozen. If you spend a little more on the Tenderstem variety you can literally just put it straight into your steaming basket without any preparation and it cooks in six minutes. It keeps very well in the chiller draw too.

Love tenderstem

saraclara · 27/05/2025 13:03

Yep. I have a steamer pan, potatoes boiling on the bottom, then tenderstem and green beans on the top for the last eight minutes.
