In September 2024 Labour announced Martin Hewitt had been appointed as the Head of the UK's newly established Border Security Command in an effort to tackle irregular migration. He earns £200,000 a year plus a pension contribution of 27%.
Setting up the new Border Security Command was a key immigration policy pledge in the Labour Party's 2024 election manifesto aimed at combating small boat crossings and disrupting the criminal networks behind them. Starmer promised that Hewitt will lead a "new era of international enforcement" to dismantle the smuggling gangs and "bring order to the asylum system ".
Yvette Cooper said at the time "Under this Government we have taken early action against the smuggler gangs increasing British officers stationed at Europol and commencing recruitment of 100 specialist investigators to go after these criminal networks and their supply chains. How much extra is this costing the tax payer?
Fast forward to March 2025, Yvette Cooper "Britain's ability to stop illegal migrants crossing the channel depends on bad weather". Have Labour only just realised this? Honestly, we all know that more migrants come across in calmer seas, it's not rocket science but it is Labour's job to sort this just as they promised, not use the weather as an excuse and waste more tax payers' money.
