Zelensky - feeling quite sad

Bakewelltart1 · 01/03/2025 20:18

I know that there are several threads about him, but I’ve watched the interview again today.
I don’t know what’s made me feel more sad - how exhausted and disappointed he looked, the fact that English isn’t his first language and it must have been hard to speak, let alone speak whilst being verbally attacked, or the suit question.
When the war is over, I want to buy that man the best suit money can buy!
How can anyone kick someone when they are so down anyway.

That’s right. Trump is already on his second term. US presidents are only allowed a maximum of two - except I believe if the US is at war…..

However...

Then go on Google maps and see how tiny the UK is compared to the States.

This is not an issue unique to you.

How many migrants have crossed the US border illegally?

And those are the ones that got recorded. Many do not get recorded. Especially if they have already been deported.

It doesn't matter how "big" the USA is. We want green spaces, mountains, lakes, hills, etc. We don't want to become a concrete jungle. I think parts of California has shown how foolish that is.

noblegiraffe · 02/03/2025 22:30

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 02/03/2025 21:33

Because it is true. One cannot just take a plane to the UK and say, now I live here. Waiting for my free healthcare and UC please.
I am not talking about refugees. I'm talking about thousands of boats pulling up and letting 25K people off. Would the UK just take them all and give them housing, food, healthcare? Doubtful

Blimey, you haven't seen all the people moaning that we do exactly that?

You can still have plenty of green spaces, but maybe not under Trump. .

“In a few short weeks, President Trump has severely damaged the government’s ability to fight climate change, upending American environmental policy with moves that could have lasting implications for the country, and the planet.
With a flurry of actions that have stretched the limits of presidential power, Mr. Trump has gutted federal climate efforts, rolled back regulations aimed at limiting pollution and given a major boost to the fossil fuel industry.
He is abandoning efforts to reduce global warming, even as the world has reached record levels of heat that scientists say is driven largely by the burning of fossil fuels. Every corner of the world is now experiencing the effects of these rising temperatures in the form of deadlier hurricanes, floods, wildfires and droughts, as well as species extinction.”

Trump also wants to log the US National Parks.

President Trump has promised to “drill, baby, drill.” Now, he also wants to log.
On Saturday, Mr. Trump directed federal agencies to examine ways to bypass endangered species protections and other environmental regulations to ramp up timber production across 280 million acres of national forests and other public lands.
The move appears aimed at increasing domestic supply as the president considers tariffs on timber imports from Canada, Germany, Brazil and elsewhere. Environmental groups say increased logging would decimate American forests, pollute air and water and devastate wildlife habitats.
And because trees absorb and store carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, cutting them down releases it back into the atmosphere, adding to global warming.
“Trump’s order will unleash the chain saws and bulldozers on our federal forests,” said Randi Spivak, the public lands policy director for the Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental group. “Clearcutting these beautiful places will increase fire risk, drive species to extinction, pollute our rivers and streams, and destroy world-class recreation sites,” she said.

So, what’s this about migrants destroying the green spaces in the USA? The presidential policy is doing a fine job of that, thank you very much. Or by green spaces do you only mean city parks, and that national parks should be mined for natural resources. Trump also fired a lot of park rangers too.

@Patterncarmen very well put- I definitely have a love hate relationship when visiting the US- so much I like about it ( particularly west coast and New York and upstate NY) and so many other things I struggle to get my head around - it's real hotchpotch of things- not dissimilar to UK in many ways-and with pretty similar issues - and you are correct - when working hard and getting in still means you struggle to get by then there's a space for ambitious meglomaniac conmen offering what seems like clarity of thought and simple solutions- when the reality is the issues are far more complex

‘Other countries get them cheap yet we developed the medicines’ that’s a bold and incorrect statement! So only the US develops medicines? If only there was somewhere that you could check whether what people post is true 🤔 No one outside of the US admires your health system, our NHS may well be struggling due to a massive lack of investment from 2010-2024 but I’d take it any day over yours.

I never said we were the only ones. But the ones we develop and we are a leading producer, in the top three at least, we let everyone have them cheap except us.
As for the healthcare system. I like calling an ambulance and having it show up in 5 minutes. I like calling and getting an appointment fairly quickly with specialists. I like not having to wait months and months for surgery, a MRI, a Cat Scan or a consultation. I like having semi-private or private hospital rooms. I love that my husband got his cancer taken care of quickly, without long waits. I like going to an ER and not feel the need to pack a cooler, bring a sleeping bag and feel the days go by as I wait. I like going to the dentist and getting an appointment as needed. I love knowing that if someone needs a knee replacement or a hip replacement, that it will get done before someone is in agony for too long.

I love not having VAT and 30% taxes. I love knowing that the town I live in will be the school my child attends without having to apply and a catchment area.

You are happy where you live and so am I. Good thing for both us.

Wrong. Clinton and Obama never served and Biden, after playing football his whole scholastic career, all of a sudden developed asthma and got deferred. But hey, he's a liberal, so it's okay. Funny how his asthma went away so quickly too.

If you don't know the facts, just tell the lies--the new MN slogan I guess?

”In an unearthed interview from 1997, Donald Trump claimed he was a “brave soldier” for avoiding STDs during his single years in the late ’90s.

“It’s amazing, I can’t even believe it. I’ve been so lucky in terms of that whole world, it is a dangerous world out there. It’s like Vietnam, sort of. It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave solider,” Trump said in the interview when Howard Stern asked how he handled making sure he wasn’t contracting STDs from the women he was sleeping with.

See here in People Magazine
people.com/politics/trump-boasted-of-avoiding-stds-while-dating-vaginas-are-landmines-it-was-my-personal-vietnam/

So, Trump’s “military service”, his “personal Vietnam” was avoiding STDs.

Were your ancestors immigrants to the States?

Dear Americans - regulate your immigration if you want but divert your anger from poor brown people to billionaires… THEY are your problem. Bezos, Zuckerberg and the storm trooper guy (who wears black tshirt/ baseball hat and his kid in the Oval Office) - They could keep 10 billion dollars each - and they could circulate their remaining combined wealth of 900 BILLION around the US economy - helping housing/ education/ hunger. You wouldn’t notice the poor brown people then…
Billionaires have cleverly diverted the attention away from themselves. I’m not saying your rich guy with 5 houses and a yacht needs to give up his money - I’m talking Billionaires. No individual needs this much wealth. It’s capitalism gone wrong. And instead everyone is focusing on poor people crossing their borders.

Trump is not the be all end all of this country.

Plus, it is VERY disingenuous to keep using "Trump" for your battering ram. This country was more than him before and will be when he is gone. It's getting a little tiring. And boring.

But hey, you do you, boo!

Thanks. The USA is a great country if you are well off, and not so great if you aren’t. In the past, more people were better off…there was less economic disparity.

When people are in despair, they like slogans. When people are fearful, they like slogans.

Another thing to consider is that 46% of Americans have passports. The rest don’t have a lot of point of comparison to other countries to reflect on their way of life.

This is because his policies on climate change and on Ukraine War and his poor diplomacy skills with Putin - damage more than your own country. They affect me and many other Europeans and yet I didn’t vote for him.
from a moral standpoint- I don’t understand how decent Americans could vote for a man who moves in on women like a bitch and grabs their pussies but I haven’t yet met an articulate Trump supporter who has been able to explain why this is a good thing in a leader.

I have disliked my government since 2016. I put the blame directly on the parties who presented candidates not worthy of dog warden. No President has ever been perfect, but we have entered the Twilight Zone since then, including 2021-2024.

If our country was smart in politics (which we are not), we'd have a third party that would represent what the majority of people feel. Perhaps, then, we'd have candidates that make you think, "Which one will be the very best?" instead of "The lesser of two weevils."

Until then, I will vote third party and if that wastes my vote; oh well. I've kept my integrity.

I suspect that is the price he is willing to pay so the US doesn't interfere with the European effort to defend Ukraine. Musk must have his minerals for his car batteries, no? The thing is to mine the materials properly requires significant investment, and Forbes reported that experts indicated that it probably isn't worth it.

www.forbes.com/sites/dereksaul/2025/02/27/trumps-big-deal-for-ukraine-minerals-it-might-not-pay-off-soon-if-ever-experts-say/

"Likely not any time soon. These minerals “won’t be used to make a profit in the next 10 or 15 years,” Benchmark Minerals Intelligence rare earths pricing analyst George Ingall told Forbes. Ingall noted it’s likely lithium is the priority for any development efforts, but “a realistic expectation” of any Ukrainian lithium supply coming to market is at minimum three or four years away, TD Cowen analyst David Deckelbaum told Forbes. Ukraine will also retain all revenues from existing mines, according to The New York Times, which may preclude the U.S. from accessing the handful of underway mineral projects in Ukraine, including a 90-year-old graphite mine and two early-stage lithium mines, according to Ingall."

That's why I'm wondering if this is really what it is about...if the minerals deal was genuine, or an excuse to set Zelenskyy up for the debacle in the Oval Office. Or, if the minerals deal is just stupidity on the part of the American government. Not sure.

The 14th amendment is not just about birth citizenship. It also ensures equal protection under the law for citizens. It was a response to the issues of formerly enslaved people in the American civil war. It authorizes the federal government to punish states that violate voting rights. It prohibits anyone who "engaged in insurrection" against the United States from holding certain offices

Are you against all of that?
