I'm 47 and I've never been to a fancy dress party and I hope I will never have to.

But if you really want to go, buy a mask and cape off amazon, I got my DS a green lantern one for £5.

Warrior Nun - plain black dress and a wimple.

Don't go. Just hand a note in an envelope to a bar person at the venue a couple of hours before the start of the event asking them to open it at the start of the event to announce "@SunshinePleaseReturn is here as the invisible woman ... See if you can spot her throughout the evening..." Then enjoy your evening at home with your feet up and a tipple of your choice...😀

A white bedsheet with the eyes cut out job done

Redburnett · 23/02/2025 19:25

What about a witch outfit, one of the Harry Potter witches must surely count as having super-powers. As long you are in costume (black dress/cloak, pointy hat and long wig) i doubt if people will mind your interpretation of superhero.
PS why do people arrange such events?

MayaPinion · 23/02/2025 19:27

The Scarlet Witch (or Wanda Maximoff) - any kind of burgundy or black dress and a burgundy headdress that is easy enough to buy or easy enough to make with a cereal box and a bit of fabric.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 23/02/2025 19:29

This type of styling for a superhero costume is a lot easier to wear than most. Few ideas on Pinterest too including Edna from the Incredibles which looks pretty cool.

Don't be tempted to half arse it or turn up in normal clothes. However you feel about fancy dress you’ll just look and feel all the more a dick if everyone else has bothered and you just haven’t.

I’m a bigger woman and a fancy dress convert. My tip is to not overthink it, order something off Amazon (anything, it doesn’t matter - the least unflattering you can find), do your make up, have a drink and go all in - have fun with it. The ‘game for a laugh’ element does buy you a certain level of respect and the pictures and memories are funny (even if it feels like ‘ugh’ at first.) You’ll also never be scared of FD ever again!

Good luck.

I’ve read enough comic books to know that plenty of superheroes have big norks. Dear god, I think sometimes comic book artists know nothing about the female anatomy.

a spider might not be a superhero but a bite from a radioactive one made a superhero. There is a Spiderwoman.

Google Scarlet Witch cosplay for ideas.

Slap on a red wig and your normal work wear and you can say you are Pepper Pots from Ironman.

Normal workwear, green skin, She Hulk.

Don‘t go at all and when they ask you say you went as Sue Storm/the invisible woman.

Go as a witch, congratulations you are Agatha Harkness.

I hate fancy dress OP, you have my sympathies.

Aparecium · 23/02/2025 19:34

I'm also a generously proportioned woman, and female superheroes all seem to be about lycra or showing skin. Not my cup of tea.

So when I had to go to a superheroes party I dressed as Votes For Women. Wore my favourite LBD and a purple, green and white satin sash. I made little 'railings' out of black card and silver pen, threaded them onto a couple of metres of thick gold chain (from a sewing shop), which I then twisted around one wrist, up one arm, around my neck, down the other arm and around the other wrist. Chained to the railings, see?

After all, the Suffragettes were superheroes!

Office clothes and glasses, with a white blouse half open to show a superman t-shirt underneath?

Brilliant!

A spider isn't really a superhero 🕷️

He made Spider-Man though without that spider he’s just Peter Parker.

ExercicenformedeZ · 23/02/2025 19:41

God how annoying. I don't know why people think that they have a right to tell people to wear fancy dress, it is so juvenile. Fine if you like that kind of thing, not fine to inflict it on others.

HongKongFinish · 23/02/2025 19:41

I'd be wearing an invisibility cloak, and stay home.

DetectiveSleuth · 23/02/2025 19:43

Loads of Etsy sellers do lovely headbands. Just type in ‘superhero headband’ and loads of options come up.

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 23/02/2025 19:46

Do you have a leather/pleather jacket? Black jeans, white tshirt and a mask from amazon/ebay. To go the extra mile add a fake katana sword.

I’d just do Catwoman. Black outfit, buy the ears, mask and tail online.

This 100%. £6 on Amazon and you’re done. No Lycra required.

Dollydaydream100 · 23/02/2025 19:50

I actually love fancy dress! I'd want to go as a baddie though like Poison Ivy.

You could just dress all in black and go as the black widow? Draw a spider on your face as a clue!

MavisTheMonkey · 23/02/2025 19:51

Maleficent isn't strictly a superhero but is a Disney villain so close enough. A nice black dress that you hopefully already own, a black cape and the head piece from Amazon with some makeup and you have a plus size friendly outfit.

I'm pressing the bollocks button!
I couldn't bring myself to participate, as a middle aged woman.
