For me some reason one memorable one is, someone telling me, they wish they had my style

We were reading Lord of the Flies at school. The class took a vote to say who they would put in charge if we all crashed on a desert island and they chose me. 30 years on I still think about that and how good it made me feel at the time.

I was working in a coffee shop when I was about 20, it was really busy and I was a bit flustered. A lady of about 60 called me over (and I thought FFS what now? As I assumed she wanted to complain or ask for something!) and she just said, ‘I just wanted to say you’re very pretty’. I was amazed, and still feel grateful because it really lifted me.

"I'm so glad I met you. I feel very reassured." A patient with dementia.

My grandson had to write about his hero.

he wrote “my Nan is my hero because she can burp sweary words”

beat that for a compliment lol

Over 20 years ago now and having the final fitting for my wedding dress - was in my own - my DM had very recently died - as I stood in the shop and assistant adjusted the veil a delivery driver came in, looked at me and said " you look really beautiful he's a very lucky man " - as someone who is pretty plain and not much tho look at it made me smile

Probably not many years before that whilst working in the city I did a hour a week with a local primary school in a very deprived area . Just before Christmas one of the boys in the class (they were 6-7) told me I was so lovely that he would get his Dad to nick something good for me when he was out of prison Blush

An old colleague said I had a nice aura about me, still wonder to this day what he meant by it!

LoveToLounge · 20/04/2025 23:23

Years and years ago I was approached by someone in a pub who thought I was Sophie Ellis Baxtor - wouldn't happen now as she has aged much better than me!

WitcheryDivine · 20/04/2025 23:56

The radiographer said I was really easy to scan 😂

When I was very pregnant and grumpy one of my colleagues said I was going to be a great mum as I care so much about other people, that was a lovely one.

BombayBicycleclub · 21/04/2025 08:56

my Mentor during med school says ‘your eyes are so green they’re mesmerising’ I do have very green eyes 🥰

evtheria · 21/04/2025 09:10

Two older female customers leant over the counter and told me I had “the most perfect eyebrows”. I was tempted to demonstrate how I could also raise and wiggle them individually/alternately (very proud of this skill).

DilemmaDelilah · 21/04/2025 09:59

I don't receive very many, but the few I have that I remember are:
that I glide when I walk, like a ship (random! From a female consultant at the hospital I work in 20 years ago)
That they really like my outfit (coral vest top and khaki cotton above knee cotton skirt with decorative embroidery cut outs, from a woman in Tesco, about 23 years ago)
That they love the way me/my house smells (from my grandson, recently)

My husband tells me I am pretty/beautiful every day, but he is 71 and completely deluded 😁. I am, in fact, a wrinkly fat old hag with only one boob, grey hair, and whose once quite passable eyes are now becoming drowned in eye bags.

An ex boyfriend described me as the least drippy girl he had ever been out with. A customer from New Zealand told me I had a voice like a tv announcer. I’m from Yorkshire 😂

BlueEyedBogWitch · 21/04/2025 10:10

I was described by a friend as a “wry sage”.

I’ve been delighted ever since.

I was donating blood and the nurse told me that my blood had been screened and deemed sufficiently high quality that it was designated for premature babies.

You sure that’s what she said? 😂

My blood also gets the ‘NEO’ label, but only because it lacks the cytomegalovirus. Same as about 40% of donors, I was told.

A woman in Tesco said “your make up is amazing”
Introduced to my line manager at a new job who said “well you’re easy on the eye aren’t you”

I’d hate that!

When someone who I knew well said I was 'dead ordinary'.😁

My son had started late in the year at primary school. The usual group of school mums, who obviously knew each other (we were new to the area) was gathered round the school gates every morning, I didn't know any of them, and they didn't make eye contact with me, so I just walked past with my son.

I had got to be very friendly with one mum who worked in the school, she heard the group talking about me, remarks like 'she thinks she's a f model'...stuck up cow, and so on....she told me she interrupted them and said, 'She isn't like that at all, she's dead ordinary'. 😍

bumsntums · 21/04/2025 12:25

The man at the tyre place this week said 'you know your treads' after I went in to discuss new tyres (& the tread wear on the current ones). I was ridiculously chuffed & have been telling all my friends.

Signedcopy · 21/04/2025 12:29

A female engineer type from a big company doing something at my house (think BT, SKY, AA: I don't want to say which) as she was leaving and half way out the door said "you're sooo pretty you know" which absolutely made my day... until I started wondering if it was a ploy to get a top feedback rating.

I'm an over 50 albeit in reasonable nick, not a supermodel or young girl next door type.

Powderblue1 · 21/04/2025 13:34

I often get comments a little my green eyes, especially from my DH. But most importantly I started a new hobby recently and won an award voted for by my teammates as the favourite and most supportive player. I was so touched I cried.

ohyesido · 21/04/2025 13:45

Someone stopping to look at me and saying wow you’re really pretty.

that was years ago now though

That’s definitely how he put it but I bet you’re right 🤣 I bet it was a very generous way of saying the same thing. I noticed while I was waiting that they were engaging with most donors about how their blood was used and gong out of their way to appreciate each donor. It worked though. I keep up with my donations since then.

XenoBitch · 21/04/2025 14:52

I went through a romantic goth phase in my 20s. I was literally just shopping in Tesco in my corset and flowing finery. A lady came up to me and asked if I had been to a wedding. She said she loved my look.

Deathraystare · 21/04/2025 19:24

Amazingly I do get the odd compliment! Normally my make up or my hair (coloured but wash and leave it).

Today, one of the patients said she loved my peach t shirt "And don't let anyone tell you different"! Which was rather sweet (I do suit peachy colours).

I have had people comment on my eyes too which I thought were blue but are apparently grey! Whatever....
