“ I’ve never thought of you as a short person “ from a colleague. I am. But it made me feel they regarded me as more significant!

I've been told many times I 'don't look like my mum'. best compliment ever 😀

When i was 21 on my Erasmus year in Lyon i was buying beer and some gorgeous french boys came into the shop, and said to the shopkeeper how cute i sounded speaking french. I couldn't even look at them for swooning.

With friends in a pub. Old man tottered over, said, "You don't know me." I agreed, wondering where this was going, as my friends giggled. "You have got the best ankles I have ever seen."
Makes me smile every time I think of it.
Since then I pay random people compliments, always sincere, and hope they get a spirit lift and a future smile.

Didn't think I'd read a similar remark...
My car had broken down miles from home & had been towed to some garage in the middle of nowhere.
I was exhausted and rushed, trying to find said (yeah starting to rain 😏) garage.
An elderly gentleman I'd had to walk past told me I had beautiful ankles!! I can't tell you how unexpected his remark was, but it certainly made me smile on one of 'those days'!
A second time... on holiday in Eygpt & a shopkeeper had asked to see my eyes (sunglasses on)!
The pharmacist from our hotel had told him my eyes were amazing & asked my husband if he'd accept 3 camels for me!!! 🥺😬 That is true!

BTW: The pharmacist had to give me antibiotics as I'd been bitten so badly by mosquitos. Cost a ruddy fortune too. 😬

"You are just like your mother" - meant to be an insult from a family member but I took it as a compliment 😎

A boyfriend telling me I have lovely nose - i wanted a nose job at 19 and glad I didn't now.

A few people have complimented me on my teeth/smile.

A colleague called my office and said she'd seen my previous boss who said i was very competent and she agreed with him. She didn't know I'd had been having a terrible time in work (upward bullying by my then team) and had cleared my desk. It was late evening and was alone. I was just about to leave my ID badge on the desk, turn the lights out never to return. That call stopped me. I then had the best 14 years of my career in that job.

I always try to give compliments, you never know what someone is going through.

I’ve had many people come up to me throughout my life and tell me they love my aura.

mustytrusty · 20/04/2025 18:35

I was walking on the beach and a lady came up to me and told me I had an amazing energy and I was an angel sent to earth. I honestly walked taller for a long while after that.

ALunchbox · 20/04/2025 18:37

I was once bizarrely complimented on my 'abs'. I really don't have any - no idea where that came from!

pandora206 · 20/04/2025 18:42

After Zumba, I was chatting to someone I'd never spoken to before. She said she loved being behind me in the class as she could see all the muscles in my back through my t-shirt when I was dancing. That was the best compliment for a gym goer.

BlondeCircus · 20/04/2025 18:43

You are lovely. Don’t ever change

Marylou2 · 20/04/2025 18:46

Our friends teenaged son told them, while on holiday in Barcelona, that the Paella was rubbish compared to mine.

HateHorridHenry · 20/04/2025 18:55

A colleague of mine once told me she loved how I “had it all together” … if only she knew ConfusedGrin

My driving instructor said I had the potential to be an excellent driver … if only he could see me now ConfusedGrin

“You have a nice waist”

I was an insecure teen at the time, and that’s when I realised that I have an absolutely amazing waist. Still proud of it 15 years later.

warmheartcoldfeet · 20/04/2025 18:59

I was entering the church at a funeral and in being directed which side to sit I was asked 'family or friend'. I replied 'just a friend'. 'Not just a friend' was the reply I got and it immediately made me well up.
It made me realise instantaneously how important we all are to each other.

Outdoor event and 2 people commented on my dress. Male and female. Made me feel.amazing as I was heading to hospital for a stoma reversal the next day. Just boosted my spirits

YearsofYears · 20/04/2025 19:06

I'm sure I've had more meaningful ones but many years ago I was at a function and the waitress was Chinese. I think she was new to the country. She was fascinated by my nose and told me how much she loved it.
I've always been insecure about my distinctive (large)nose and this was the reminder I needed at the time that bigger noses can be considered beautiful. Now I notice more models and actresses with stronger profiles but I'll always think fondly of that lady for admiring mine.

An older lady stopped me the other day to say my figure looked amazing. That made my day!

ManyBerries · 20/04/2025 19:37

As a teen, I was out at a cabaret evening and there were lots of younger kids there. I organised games for them to play all evening. At the end my mum said to me the other parents had been thrilled their kids were kept entertained and one was overheard asking ‘Who is the wonderful girl in the turquoise dress?’ Meeee!

lemonandtea · 20/04/2025 19:41

Work colleagues at a new job telling me that I had a nice figure. I had given birth 9 months earlier.

IdaGlossop · 20/04/2025 19:43

My DD, who when I complimented her on how kindly and respectfully she had spoken to an elderly friend said: 'Thank-you. I learnt that from you.' What made me happy, as well as her doing what she had done, was that she had learnt by silently watching me as I had never had a conversation with her about it.

Anrom19 · 20/04/2025 19:51

My daughter who is 27 was out the other night and a young lady/ woman /girl of about 20 asked her if she was Mrs anroms daughter, yes I am she told her , please tell your mum I wouldn’t be here without her kindness, reliability and compassion and neither would a lot of my peers . We all adored her . I was a mere TA in a local school in a deprived area . I never knew the difference I made by just being there and cried when I was told and saw the selfie that this dear young child (who was no longer young ) insisted my daughter took with her . I screwed up a lot of times in parenting but came through with great kids and to hear that really made my day , or even my year !!!

HRTQueen · 20/04/2025 20:17

I was upset over a fling I had had (nothing serious my ego was hurt) and had a little cry. Ds asked why I was crying so I said someone didn’t really want to be my friend anymore but it was ok I was just a little bit sad. Ds was shocked and said ‘how could anyone not want to be your friend mummy you are so lovely’ 🥰 he was about 9 but it was so sweet and he was so sincere

tunainatin · 20/04/2025 20:29

Someone described me as 'a hero who moves quietly through the world' which I thought was lovely. Also it was in an email so I can re-read it when I'm not feeling very heroic!
