For me some reason one memorable one is, someone telling me, they wish they had my style
and how stylish they think i am

I have two that stand out . One was when I was a nursery nurse , one of the preschoolers who wasn’t the best behaved I think there were issues in his family life. He was dropped off at 7.30 am and picked up at 6 pm so all day in a day nursery x 5 He whispered in my ear “I wish you were my Mommy. “ I think we were making Mother’s Day cards. Felt like I was making a difference.
Another was when I caught a train in Wales and an artist who had noticed me at the station said I had fantastic bone structure. I don’t get compliments like that these days unfortunately!

A former line report left for a new job recently. She told me she has never felt more supported in her work than when she worked with me, that I always instinctively knew what my team needed, and I was a lovely human being.

I was on the fringes of a particular friendship group at university and so vaguely knew this girl and we were friendly in passing. I always admired her, she was stylish, fun, intelligent and completely smashed any law student stereotypes.

Years later, she is unsurprisingly very high flying according to SM but we haven't kept in touch. I posted a pic on FB boasting about something my dd had achieved. Out of the blue she posted the loveliest comment about DD. I thanked her, and she followed it up with a string of compliments to me, crediting me largely for DD being in the next generation of inspirational women etc. It was slightly over the top, maybe she mistook me for someone else, maybe she was pissed. Either way, I beamed for days 😄

My ten year old saying "mum, you make me feel so calm"

cryinglaughing · 03/02/2025 13:49

Standing on one of the main roads through Nottingham, outside a restaurant.
A fella came out of the restaurant and said "my girlfriend and I think you have a great sense of style". I looked in the window and the girlfriend was grinning and giving me a thumbs up.

I was a tomboy but had a quirky style when I wore a skirt. I had cropped bleach blond hair and really way out glasses 🤭. I used to get a lot of male attention, the compliment from his girlfriend made my day though.

I overheard a person who used to be a friend, but with hindsight turned out to be an incredibly toxic influence say to another person at a party 'that skinny bitch'....I had lost the best part of 8 stone at that point and it made my day :-)

My ten year old saying "mum, you make me feel so calm"

I love that. Best compliment.

BobbyBiscuits · 03/02/2025 13:56

That I have a really positive aura.
A few people said that. I took it as a compliment.
Though they clearly didn't see me when I was pissed off!

Thindog · 03/02/2025 13:59

Some children I’d taught told me they’d voted me the smiliest teacher.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/02/2025 14:01

Someone I knew on Facebook described me as 'one of life's lovely people' after a comment I made - I will take that

Woppa · 03/02/2025 14:04

This thread has encouraged me to give random compliments! The recipient might remember it forever.

When I was pregnant the midwife commented that she always happy to see my my urine sample as its was always very clear and asked if Id been complimented on my urine before - I confirmed that was the first time 😁

I also had a v random compliment when the midwife came to visit for a post-natal check. DS had gained a bit of weight - I was breast feeding and, pointing to my boobs, she said “I must say you have wonderful equipment”. I was still a bit befuddled by hormones but as a 34B I have never forgotten it… Grin

I was once in Paris and a Frenchman asked me for directions. I explained in my best schoolgirl French and he apologised and said that he thought I was Parisian. I was chuffed to be thought of as having Parisian style.

Thornybush · 03/02/2025 14:20

I cleaned in the evenings at a hospital while studying . 19 years old. One of the nurses told me I had a very pretty face. Made my day to hear that , especially from another lady!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/02/2025 14:21

I went out with my younger son for lunch - he will have been about 17. He said that he'd told his friend that he was going out with me and his friend had said 'how can you sit and just talk to your mum for an hour?' My son, apparently, had replied 'how can you not?' I thought that was great.

Poppymeldrum · 03/02/2025 10:12

Dp once told me I have 'really nice, skinny and smooth elbows'
Only part of me that is skinny

I'm always getting comments on my eyes
I've always wanted chocolate brown eyes, but ended up with not quite blue/green/grey eyes

I hated them as a kid but don't mind them now

My son somehow has this mix of eye colour too! Gorgeous. Dh has brown eyes and mine are Hazel so I'm not sure how they came about!

TulipTuesday · 03/02/2025 14:27

When I was 14 or 15 I had a disastrous hair cut which could only be fixed by chopping it short. So I ended up with a short angled bob. I hated it but spent every morning smoothing it and curling it under so it looked passable.

One day the coolest and most utterly gorgeous lad in year 11 walked past me in the corridor and said ‘that haircut makes you look so foxy’ I swooned and was in love with him forever after.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/02/2025 14:28

@Poppymeldrum I've got blue:green/grey eyes too - !

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 03/02/2025 14:29

My very unemotional and undemonstrative FIL once took me aside and tearfully told me I'd done a lovely job raising children. He'd never passed opinion on me in any sense before and it was so heartfelt it really moved me.

TheFlis · 03/02/2025 14:30

Two stand out. Someone once told me they loved my laugh because it was “properly joyful”.

The most touching compliment I ever received was from an old boss. He was a great guy but had a tough upbringing and was regarded as a bit of a repressed, heart of stone type. He told me in an appraisal that I always put my team before myself and that I made him want to be a better person. I cried on the bus home that night.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 03/02/2025 14:31

I was told I wear hats well.

2catsandhappy · 03/02/2025 14:31

With friends in a pub. Old man tottered over, said, "You don't know me." I agreed, wondering where this was going, as my friends giggled. "You have got the best ankles I have ever seen."
Makes me smile every time I think of it.
Since then I pay random people compliments, always sincere, and hope they get a spirit lift and a future smile.

Whataretalkingabout · 03/02/2025 14:33

I remember this one because I never receive any! and then this one was incredibly amazing if not over the top. At a family military honor's celebration, I wore a gorgeous hat! A uniformed man turned around and said to me, You are the most gorgeous thing I have ever seen; kind of like Lady Diana! It turns out he was a pastor in the armed forces. So odd!

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 03/02/2025 14:37

A lovely woman in maybe her late 60's telling me a had great legs

Muchtoomuchtodo · 03/02/2025 14:42

We played Herd Mentality with a group of friends over Christmas.
i was voted the person most likely to go to Heaven! I don’t have a strong faith but I am still beaming inside at that one!
