You will succeed at something in life because you have determination.

ItGhoul · 03/02/2025 17:48

Years ago when I first had my hair cut very short, my DP said 'Phwoarr, you look like a cool girl in a French film in the 1960s, studying at the Sorbonne, always drinking red wine and smoking in scruffy cafes and shagging some older intellectual bloke who'll end up writing an angsty novel about you'.

Literally the greatest compliment I've ever had.

WattleTyler · 03/02/2025 17:50

When I was 26, a guest in the hotel I was staying at told my (now) husband that I had the most beautiful body he’d ever seen.

As this was in French Polynesia, topless sunbathing was de riguer, so this could be taken as a tad inappropriate. I was very happy to take it as a compliment though.

Annoyingly, no-one has said it since. 😂

This is a bit of a long story but like some of the others I have read on this thread it shows the power of compliments.

An old school friend came round for drinks a couple of years ago on New Year's Eve. We were two single mothers sharing a bottle of wine while our DCs were asleep upstairs.

She was feeling down about not having done anything with her life and her marriage had recently broken down. By this time I had managed to get myself back on track following my divorce and was re-training in a new career.

I told her that I was sad to hear her talking this way, and that back at school I was always very envious of her because she was so clever compared to me. We talked for a few hours that evening about our lives and our old ambitions from our school days and I thought no more of it.

She recently told me that I was her inspiration and my words that night changed her life. She has since re-trained and now has a great job she loves. Coming from someone I really admired, I will never forget her appreciation of my complimenting her cleverness!

40 years ago I was on holiday and at a theatre in Hunstanton to see the 'Summer Time Special' variety show. The compere suddenly stops and points at me and said, "There is a girl in the front row who is the spitting image of a young Hayley Mills." I had no idea who she was... no googling her then.

However, years later I look at my childhood photos and I was! That comment has always stayed with me.

henlake7 · 03/02/2025 18:43

Last week one lady told me she loved my hair colour (it's dyed!).
Shortly afterwards another lady told me she loved my hair and it was in good condition.
Really cheered me up, since menopause I've been struggling with the thin, frizzy pile of straw on top of my head.....maybe im getting somewhere!😀

Klprenfa · 03/02/2025 18:46

A boy had a crush on me in 6th form. Told me that when I smiled at stuff he said (he was quite funny) that it would make his heart go fuzzy.

VeneziaJ · 03/02/2025 18:47

Being told by a physics PHD that I was the most intelligent person they had ever known. When I feel stupid or inadequate I remember that compliment!

fivetriangulartrees · 03/02/2025 18:50

Colleague: You'll make a great mother one day!

Me: Wow, thank you!

Colleague (looking uncomfortable): No, I just meant you carry wet wipes...

BubblePerm · 03/02/2025 19:03

After successfully completing my police staff investigators course, we all had feedback from the course tutors.
I was told that with my energy and enthusiasm he was sure he would see me back in training school for the next level up course.
As a tired middle aged woman who didn't feel I was getting any more intelligent as I aged, this has carried me through those hard moments in the job and made me carry on.

Echobelly · 03/02/2025 19:04

The nicest compliments I've had are:

'You are so chilled' and 'It's good to have you as a friend'

sharonau · 03/02/2025 19:07

That I look like Nicole Scherzinger lol

FabulousPharmacyst · 03/02/2025 19:09

During my c section one surgeon to the other surgeon - “she has beautiful structures”

didn’t know what to make of that one

Pashazade · 03/02/2025 19:32

The door greeter in the Disney store on Oxford Street, greeted me with "Good Afternoon Miss Moneypenny" in a Sean Connery accent, made my day! Not sure that it was a compliment per se but it did make me feel good. Grin

Titasaducksarse · 03/02/2025 19:37

There's no comment about my looks that would make me feel 'wow'.

Being complimented on being kind or a good listener matters far more to me personally.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 03/02/2025 19:53

Any compliment I've ever had basically, I come from a family where compliments aren't a thing.

BUT a former colleague was so lovely and lit up any room she was in no matter how awful the day was. I told her that once and she was really and uncharacteristically overwhelmed. It made me realise how powerful it is to point out when you see good in the world, or something that makes you smile.

I make it a habit now to say any positive thoughts I have out loud, both to strangers and people I know well. It takes a huge amount of gumption as I am otherwise quite reserved and awkward but hopefully the sincerity always comes across properly.

paristotokyo · 03/02/2025 19:56

Been told I have a calming voice whilst at work, which was nice. I've also had a colleague tell me I have a really nice laugh!

Omgwhatthehell · 03/02/2025 20:02

Years ago, a friend’s boyfriend once said about me “you’re like a moment of sunshine walking into a room”.

ScaryM0nster · 03/02/2025 20:15

The scene:
About 2am, the control room of an oil
platform, coveralls, boots, prescription safety specs and ‘just taken off a hard hat’ hair. On the second night shift of a 18 day trip (so at that point where you’re totally zombie as havent had a proper sleep yet).

The context:
I was the second woman to have worked on this particular platform in recent history. Last regular one before that was about 10 years previously. The one I had rotated out with was Columbian poster girl esque, and known for fluttering eyelids rather than working.

Had been in and out of the control room since start of shift, trying to work out why something wasn’t working and sort the associated paperwork in parallel.

The comment:
You’re alright to have in here you know, not as pretty to look at as ………but far more use.

Engineers getting anything positive from technicians is pretty much unheard of, let alone when you’re the new girl. Let alone you’re technically good and we’ll point that out to you.

WomenInConstruction · 03/02/2025 20:22

Went with a bbhk watching generation Chinese friend to proper Chinese restaurant in Manchester china town.
I had recently learnt to use chopsticks and we were tucking into dinner using those, when she went to the loo the waiter came over and asked if I was brought up using chopsticks as I was obviously very skilled.
To a teen with pretty narrow horizons thus far that was a memorable compliment. 🤣

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 03/02/2025 20:41

I get compliments about my hair virtually every time I go out which is always lovely but when two random 16 year olds came up to me last weekend to tell me how much he they loved it was great! 16 year old girls don't give out compliments easily to women in their 40s 😂

CluelessAsFuck · 03/02/2025 21:07

I gave someone at work a box of biscuits (i only see this person a few times a year when I travel to their office). He said thank you, I said "you deserve it". He then said "there should be more people like you". I melted.

AtticusCatticus · 03/02/2025 21:21

My friend once thanked me for making life magical for her children - they stayed here a lot.

My husband said I had made a calm and loving home for him and our children that was very different to the stressful and argumentative one he grew up in.

SingingSands · 03/02/2025 21:54

A really respected running veteran told me that I had "an effortless running style". I was tickled pink for weeks afterwards.

(Just to note: it does not feel effortless when I'm running! 😆)

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 03/02/2025 22:14

Someone telling me I'm an amazing hostess when the topic of hostess came up, and I said what are you on about I can't cook and I have no matching crockery, and she said no whenever we have people over of we go to an event, it's always you making sure everyone feels welcomed and you're so friendly and you introduce people to each other and you look after everyone - that's what a great hostess is
