I know I scrub up nicely but I was genuinely floored when posting for advice on hair colour on the 'Does My Bumb Look 40' Facebook page. And a complete stranger told me 'I don't have any advice on hair colour, but just wanted to say you are so very beautiful.' It made my fucking year!

Also, when DD (20) split with her long term boyfriend, she rang me in tears so I drove half way across the country, late at night, to be with her. I was so honoured that it never occurred to her that I wouldn't immediately drop everything and go to her (and it would never have occurred to me not to go).

It was a cold windy day and I was dressed in bod standard jeans a yellow jumper and ski jacket. I’d nipped into a large shopping centre and at the till as I went to pay for an item, a much younger than me cashier said I wore colours so well and had put my outfit together brilliantly, that it made me look radiant.

i thought I looked a bit of a mess and have lost a lot of my confidence after gaining weight so it was a truly lovely thing to say and made my day

Myoldbear · 03/02/2025 16:18

I was reading a book in a coffee shop, and a man approached me as he walked out and said how lovely it was to see someone reading a real book.

Freysimo · 03/02/2025 16:27

I had a Miele repair man round and he said my washing machine was "very well cared for". I was surprisingly pleased.

redbuttons · 03/02/2025 16:28

In my 40s many moons ago my daughters young teenage friend out of the blue said he hoped his wife would look as good as me when she was my age,

DaphneduM · 03/02/2025 16:30

About six weeks into my new job (teaching assistant) the Headteacher stopped me in the playground to say how many of my new teacher colleagues had told him how amazing I was and what a difference I made to both the pupils in the classroom and to them. It was a very tough comprehensive. I was absolutely thrilled and it was the start of a fabulous career at that school which took me to retirement. Also I made my two longstanding close friends there!!!

CucumberSandcastle · 03/02/2025 16:31

An elderly woman once said to me - oh my gosh! You are absolutely glowing! Are you in love? 💕 It was very sweet.

MrsAvocet · 03/02/2025 16:32

Getting off a plane with 3 young children many years ago, a middle aged bloke in a business suit who'd been sitting near us told me that I was a great Mum who was doing a brilliant job. It was a really nice surprise.

HillyHoney · 03/02/2025 16:35

A very sweet Italian girl I worked with years ago once said that she appreciated that I'd never treated her like a foreigner. As.someone who'd lived abroad prior to that, I knew exactly what she meant and was glad to have been able to be that for her.

The nicest ever was "You're a wonderful Mum to my grandson. My DD would be so happy" from my DH's MIL for the first time.

It must be so hard for her to have lost her daughter criminally young and then over the years see DH meet me and me spend time doing things with her grandson that her daughter should have been doing.

Oh my goodness, when I worked this one out I did a big sob! ❤️

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 03/02/2025 16:39

Someone on here once said I was channelling the spirit of William Beverage. I think she meant it as a bit of a neg as I'd just written something quite geeky about the purpose of Maternity Benefits. It's still the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me on the internet though.

Newgreensofa · 03/02/2025 16:39

When I worked on the tills in a really busy bargain outlet, an older woman paused after I’d served her and said “you are a gentle soul”.

Sittingonthefence83 · 03/02/2025 15:22

These are all so lovely, they're bringing little tears to my eyes ♥️

Me too - what a heartwarming and positive thread!

Middle aged and In the last year a woman stopped me and said you are so beautiful!

I get clothes and hair compliments a lot.

A young teen wanted to know where I got my skater dress last summer.

You expect appearance compliments less as you get older, so it is always a nice surprise.

horumforaforum · 03/02/2025 17:01

A guy I was briefly dating once told me I was very good at crossing roads.

Papergirl1968 · 03/02/2025 17:08

I’m a GP receptionist and had neurosurgery two years ago to remove a benign brain tumour.
It took a huge toll on me physically and emotionally, and I do struggle with my job sometimes because of the memory and concentration issues I have, which has knocked my confidence.
We have a few patients who have or did have brain tumours and I try to unofficially support them, checking in with them and making a few minutes to chat to them, being very open about my own experience.
One of them told me I was her inspiration because I’d got through it and was back at work, back to relative normality.
That meant the world to me. I’m a very ordinary person and have never been called an inspiration before.

thiswaypleasethankyou · 03/02/2025 17:10

We were all sat around at a friend's house after being out at a club, and I must have said or done something (can't remember what now), and a friend went 'aww, everyone should have a thiswaypleasethankyou, everyone needs one of you'

Manchesterbythesea · 03/02/2025 17:15

Someone told me once my house is very welcoming and they always feel at home here. I took that as a huge compliment!

squishyarms · 03/02/2025 17:21

A man who I come into contact with through work said to me, I was thinking the other day who is the nicest person I know and it's you squishyarms. You are always smiling, kind, have something nice to say and are just generally nice to be around.

It was really lovely to hear

JohnTheRevelator · 03/02/2025 17:26

Years ago,my SIL told her friend prior to meeting me,'You'll like John, she's really funny'. I took it as a huge compliment.

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 03/02/2025 17:28

When I was at college I worked as a waitress, it was a Christmas party group night and they were always tricky. Someone had had a really bad night with awful customers, I said 'oh, I've had a great night' and my manager said 'but you always have a great night, because you work hard, are nice to your guests and expect that everything will go well.' Which has basically been my philosophy ever since.

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch · 03/02/2025 17:33

In my first office job (we there 8 years) I had a friendship with a quirky guy who was about 15 years older (strictly platonic, but we were more similar that most of the others in the office). We were IM'ing one day and I can't remember what I said, but I was very quiet and didn't speak to a lot of people, but he replied "try as you may to exist in the shadows, you're still a splash of colour in an all grey office".
It was just a nice compliment because I did just try to fly under the radar but it was nice to know I was seen.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 03/02/2025 17:43

That my children were a credit too me... I've been told this several times by different people.

That I'm the type of person others could be envious of.... by my sister and said with such love and warmth I filled up. She said she wished she had my confidence and self esteem.

Marilyn17 · 03/02/2025 17:44

When I was on holiday in France many years ago, I was having a chat with a British couple staying at the same hotel and they told me I spoke excellent English for a Swedish person. They said I spoke it as well as someone English and they were very impressed. They were astounded when I told them I was born and bred in Chorley, Lancashire!
