Trump's Theory about the Plane Crash

Just watched his press conference in absolute disbelief. He's just blamed the air traffic controllers as apparently under the Biden administration they recruited people into the role who weren't intellectually capable. He actually blames diversity criteria and basically box ticking.... 'hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities' - that's a direct quote.

As someone with ASD, anxiety and depression who works in a high level, highly skilled role, I am angry on behalf of anyone like me.

The man is a dangerous liar.

Remember the case of the Swiss air traffic controller who was killed by the father who lost his entire family in the Überlingen mid-air collision?

I despise Trump, but air traffic controller is not a job for anyone with mental health issues. Sorry. The consequences of any mistake are just too catastrophic.

Mental health difficulties do not make it impossible to be an ATC.

There may be some specific MH difficulties that are incompatible with the job role but it's not a catch all situation..

Trumps a twat - as if we didn't already know that!

I and others saw an actual advert for recruitment for visually impaired pilots and air traffic control staff. I've already stated this on the thread.

News outlets reported on it. People did podcasts on it. Not one found that it was 'fake news'.

People were asking where he got it from and this is where he got it from.

I don't see what is so contraversial in answering the question asked in the thread.

So providing a link should be piss easy.
Was it an ad saying people who need glasses, but whose glasses correct to 20/20 vision can be pilots? Because those people are visually impaired, but not quite such a good story.

Again. E.V.I.D.E.N.C.E. needed.
Given the requirements for pilots posted above.
NB ‘I heard it in a podcast/read it in the press’ isn’t evidence.

Agreed

As I said already, I didn't screenshot it at the time. It was everywhere for about a week.

Bullshit.

What matters here is the definition of 'visually impaired'. I can't believe that hasn't been addressed by your and by others making the claim. So let's have it: did the FAA seriously recruit people as pilots whose vision could not be corrected to 20/20 with glasses? If so, I'd like to see the evidence, especially as the criteria posted by a PP suggest this is not true.

The problem is that Trump is president of a country we have always thought of as relatively civilised. His peers as regards dictatorial madness tend to run countries that don't meet that criterion.

That's beside the point (entirely). Are you suggesting human suffering is only worthy of outrage (revulsion, despair - just some of the terms used to describe Trump opening his mouth) and discussion when it's not expected???

Ah…it was everywhere…for a week…you saw it…
If it disappeared, so you not think it may be because it was crap disinformation you bought into?
Because it seems to me that partially sighted pilots is a scandal that wouldn’t disappear.

Of course not. But dog bites man isn’t news. Man bites dog is.

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 30/01/2025 20:18

You said you saw it. You said you saw the FAA put out an advert to hire visually impaired pilots as a DEI drive. That is pure bullshit.

Amaranthasweetandfair · 30/01/2025 20:18

If they've had partially sighted pilots and air traffic controllers for a year or so I think there would have been an accident before now.

cardibach · 30/01/2025 20:19

I didn't make the claim, I am letting people know where Trump got it from.

But you aren’t letting us know, you are stating something you can’t evidence.
And you’ve been insisting it’s true.

AmateurNoun · 30/01/2025 20:19

Trump is an idiot for saying something before all the facts are established.

But also the FAA does seem to have gone for some dodgy DEI recruitment targets. The best that Snopes can say is that the targets have been around for a few years - they don't debunk that they exist.
www.snopes.com/news/2024/01/15/faa-dei-initiatives/

There are also those issues with the biographical questionnaire that are covered by Tracing Woodgrains, taken from public court records in the Brigida v Buttigieg lawsuit (which I understand is ongoing).

So there may be something to this but Trump is still an idiot 🤷‍♀️

Not in the slightest, but when you are confronted with a known predator, you kind of expect it to try to eat you. Monsters gonna monster. The change from the previous administration in the US on the other hand is pretty stark - we see the basics of civilisation being dismantled in a matter of days.

This is not to say that other awful regimes do not exist or should not be reported on - but those regimes have been awful for year, decades even. With Trump, we are not quite two weeks into a shower of shit that is simply extreme. It's the swiftness of it that makes it newsworthy.

At the time, the deluge of 'woke' policies was tumbling out of everywhere and I think, although I cannot be sure, that the Harvard President and the scandal about how she got her role was the thing that came a week later so that overtook the FAA issue.

I'm guessing that was also fake news because you didn't see it. Because all real news has to run through you or something?

AzurePanda · 30/01/2025 20:20

This is what I’ve seen referenced in the past as well as details of a a class action brought against the FAA for discrimination in favour of DEI candidates. I really don’t think it’s the time to bring it up.

I can confidently state there is nothing to this.
Nobody has provided any evidence for this mad idea.

The FAA has DEI targets for some roles. They are not lowering standards to hire substandard staff and blind fucking pilots. HtH.

I'm saying that's where he got it from and linked to a news story that stated the thing that he said.

Hence saying 'this is where he got it from'.

Someone else linked a podcast at the time on the same topic.

Others said they had also seen it.

So, I did evidence it, in the link that I posted.
