Trump's Theory about the Plane Crash

Just watched his press conference in absolute disbelief. He's just blamed the air traffic controllers as apparently under the Biden administration they recruited people into the role who weren't intellectually capable. He actually blames diversity criteria and basically box ticking.... 'hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities' - that's a direct quote.

As someone with ASD, anxiety and depression who works in a high level, highly skilled role, I am angry on behalf of anyone like me.

The man is a dangerous liar.

And all the "we need a Trump in the UK" people. I made myself watch him making his speech on the news and I felt despair and revulsion in equal parts, Two weeks in and it gets worse every single day. He takes a horrible tragedy which has left so many dead, many more bereaved and then made these sickening remarks while the emergency services were still recovering bodies from the water.

[From someone with a healthy interest in politics] I'm entirely indifferent to Trump (as I essentially am to the dozens of other leaders of countries I don't live in), thus I couldn't tell you ANY detail of what he has said since inauguration (never mind a day to day summation!). If he stimulates despair and revulsion in you, it won't be difficult to avoid seeing/hearing him. One could be forgiven for thinking you're seeking to be offended.

Do you think people with "severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities" should be air traffic controllers?

Do you honestly believe for a second that they are?

Really? I like watching the news in my country. He’s on it a lot.

I’ve read the thread. Not seen evidence of this. Evidence of diversity awareness in the organisation. Not in terms of partially sighted pilots.

Ok. Sure.

I am not saying it is the right place.

People asked where he got these crazy ideas from and the OP wished him dead so my post was to point out it wasn't just out of nowhere and that it had indeed been news a year ago.

It was fake news a year ago you mean.

AzurePanda · 30/01/2025 20:07

I agree that this was not remotely the time or place to raise the issue but the FAA’s focus on DEI hiring policies over merit has been amply covered in the past year or two. I’ve listened to at least 2 fairly detailed podcasts on the subject and have heard an awful lot more references to it.

Ok. Sure.

Evidence? I’ve looked at the other links. They don’t evidence partially sighted pilots or air traffic controllers. A PP has posted the sight requirements for pilots.

The Sky news correspondent suggested that Trump had been given preliminary details of the cause; whether or not it was wise at this juncture for Trump to reference the cause is another matter. He makes his own calls on etiquette though, he's not known to be guarded. So if it IS the case that this disaster was preventable, you'd expect him to reference that from the get go.

Nah, it doesn’t work like that.

The accident happened < 24 hours ago, the investigating team will have barely unpacked their suitcases. It takes days/weeks to collate all the bits of evidence data and for anyone to come to a conclusion so it’s way too early for anyone to know the cause yet….but that doesn’t stop people guessing.

The Sky News correspondent is just speculating.

As this and other threads have amply demonstrated people will believe any old shite that aligns with their prejudices. And despite being shown comprehensively and repeatedly that it is nonsense they will continue to trot it out ad nauseam.

cardibach · 30/01/2025 20:08

AlisonDonut · 30/01/2025 20:07

Ok sure. If you say so.

No. If common sense and actual fact says so.

ruethewhirl · 30/01/2025 20:08

Quite apart from the fact that he's talking out of his arse as usual, he's an absolute arsehole to be using this tragedy as an 'opportunity' for political platforming. Absolutely devoid of tact or scruples. Not that that wasn't already clear, but I'm disgusted by what he's said re this.

For roles which don’t required perfect sight or intellectual prowess, I’m sure. And rightly so. For pilots? Nope.

Ok, sure. If you say so.

The point of people reporting it a year ago with the complete disbelief that they could be so insane. You get that right?

Yes. But I’ve seen no evidence of any such reporting.

Can you explain what you think they were reporting when it comes to air traffic controllers?

Again. E.V.I.D.E.N.C.E. needed.
Given the requirements for pilots posted above.
NB ‘I heard it in a podcast/read it in the press’ isn’t evidence.

Me too. I switch it off though, or fast forward through items I find unpleasant or upsetting. There are world leaders (lots of them!) guilty of far worse than verbals (FAR worse) who barely merit a mention on MN? I'm of the opinion that the dialogue around Trump is media induced hysteria 🙂

The problem is that Trump is president of a country we have always thought of as relatively civilised. His peers as regards dictatorial madness tend to run countries that don't meet that criterion.

cakeorwine · 30/01/2025 20:11

I and others saw an actual advert for recruitment for visually impaired pilots and air traffic control staff. I've already stated this on the thread.

News outlets reported on it. People did podcasts on it. Not one found that it was 'fake news'.

People were asking where he got it from and this is where he got it from.

I don't see what is so contraversial in answering the question asked in the thread.

No, it’s understandable worry because the leader of one of t(e most powerful countries on the planet is riding rough shod over democracy (at least one EO is counter to the constitution, for eg).
