Trump's Theory about the Plane Crash

Just watched his press conference in absolute disbelief. He's just blamed the air traffic controllers as apparently under the Biden administration they recruited people into the role who weren't intellectually capable. He actually blames diversity criteria and basically box ticking.... 'hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities' - that's a direct quote.

As someone with ASD, anxiety and depression who works in a high level, highly skilled role, I am angry on behalf of anyone like me.

The man is a dangerous liar.

Despite all the wild speculation and conspiracy theories it looks most likely that it was pilot error and not an error by air traffic controllers.

In that situation the passenger airplane had 'right of way' and was coming into land after an adjustment to the runway it was being directed to. The military helicopter was asked whether it had such of the aircraft which it confirmed it did but it was likely looking at the passenger aeroplane that had just taken off to its right and missed the plane coming into land on its left. An error of the pilot. Yes aperhaps the air traffic controller could have been more specific about the direction of the incoming plane. But it appears that the helicopter was of its course and therefore compounded one error with a fatal one. Very sad.

Sorry to get in the way of a maddeningly ludicrous President politicising a tragedy or the fiery arguments about employment policy.

WishinAndHopin · 30/01/2025 19:46

Discrimination should be tackled by increasing fairness for everybody, not by favouring certain characteristics and actively discriminating against others.

For example, enforcing objective criteria/standards for all, and finding means of anonymising job applications.

There is a need for some kind of policy, because research shows that, for example, equally qualified women are less likely to get many jobs or promotions simply because they are women. But swapping the demographics traditionally targeted by discrimination is not it.

Of new created jobs in America, only 12% went to white people, suggesting that whites are now being proactively discriminated against. DEI hasn’t solved the problem, they’ve just swapped the victims.

jenesaispaspourquoi · 30/01/2025 19:50

I was only saying this morning that Trump will find some kind of angle to blame this tragedy on wokeism, but couldn't realistically think how on earth even he could manage to spin this. But how stupid of me! I forgot about the dwarves!!

I just find it hard to believe that a helicopter could be in the landing path of a massively busy airport and not be aware of planes coming in to land and/or taking off especially as this was not a private individual it was a military helicopter so highly trained, highly skilled and experienced 😱

You have a link for this advert for blind pilots, I assume?

Maybe if you go listen to the Trace podcast he can assist you. It was all over the news a year ago. And not blind, visually impaired.

Livelovebehappy · 30/01/2025 18:04

Same. It’s absolute madness. You’d think the main criteria for traffic controllers would be good eyesight. Whilst some people think disability should never be a barrier, it definitely should be for certain jobs.

But even if this is true, surely the point is that it should be raised and addressed in a different way, at a different time, not when so many people have lost their lives as a blatant point scoring opportunity. It is disgusting that he is using these people’s deaths to make a ‘point’. The man is a monster. As someone else pointed out though, we should not be surprised. Also, he’s only just getting started on his campaign to identify people who are different as people we can hate. Now where have we seen that before?

Podcasts being notoriously reliable? No. Nobody advertised for visually impaired pilots. Unless, as a PP suggested, it was advertising that 20/20 vision with glasses was acceptable.

Edit: the only Trace podcast I can find is Australian

I think the poster’s point is that a press conference, in the immediate aftermath of a tragic event, when the bodies of the dead haven’t been found yet, when no cause has yet been established for the accident, isn’t the time to be spouting these theories. For the sake of the families of the deceased.

SassK · 30/01/2025 19:56

The Sky news correspondent suggested that Trump had been given preliminary details of the cause; whether or not it was wise at this juncture for Trump to reference the cause is another matter. He makes his own calls on etiquette though, he's not known to be guarded. So if it IS the case that this disaster was preventable, you'd expect him to reference that from the get go.

The scary thing is how many Americans will agree with every word he says.

And all the "we need a Trump in the UK" people. I made myself watch him making his speech on the news and I felt despair and revulsion in equal parts, Two weeks in and it gets worse every single day. He takes a horrible tragedy which has left so many dead, many more bereaved and then made these sickening remarks while the emergency services were still recovering bodies from the water.

Clafoutie · 30/01/2025 19:57

AlisonDonut · 30/01/2025 19:54

That was not my point though! If it needs to be raised again it should be done at a different time, not at the very moment people are finding out they have lost loved ones, and not in such a way that people are immediately blamed when investigations have barely begun.

Sinkintotheswamp · 30/01/2025 19:59

He is even more mental than I thought. Awful man.

It could suggest a lot of things. Where did you get this statistic?

I’m afraid it really is not out of the question, and sometimes sadly even those with military training, skill and experience get caught out…

@Bouledeneige has described one entirely credible possibility - the controller issued a legit (in terms of US rules) conditional clearance, due to reasons unknown the helicopter crew mistook an aircraft they were looking at for the CRJ they were meant to pass behind and there was a resultant collision.

Bouledeneige · 30/01/2025 20:01

SassK I'm sure Trump was given a preliminary assessment of the cause of the crash. As any leader would be. That didn't mean what came out of his mouth had any correlation with his brief.

I'm sure he was fully briefed on Covid but he suggested you could ingest bleach to cure it. In fact I imagine whatever he says is the opposite of the careful assessments he's given.

Do you think that’s likely? That Trump knows the ATC was someone with dwarfism and learning difficulties? Or just that he’s a total and utter wanker who looks for every opportunity to stir hatred?

I know what my money is on 🤬

I’ve read the thread. Not seen evidence of this. Evidence of diversity awareness in the organisation. Not in terms of partially sighted pilots.

I am not saying it is the right place.

People asked where he got these crazy ideas from and the OP wished him dead so my post was to point out it wasn't just out of nowhere and that it had indeed been news a year ago.
