Trump's Theory about the Plane Crash

Just watched his press conference in absolute disbelief. He's just blamed the air traffic controllers as apparently under the Biden administration they recruited people into the role who weren't intellectually capable. He actually blames diversity criteria and basically box ticking.... 'hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities' - that's a direct quote.

As someone with ASD, anxiety and depression who works in a high level, highly skilled role, I am angry on behalf of anyone like me.

The man is a dangerous liar.

Do you think people with "severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities" should be air traffic controllers?

Well, it's not an issue, @Lilifer because:

"A medical history or clinical diagnosis of a psychosis, or other severe mental disorder is disqualifying. All Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) applicants must take and pass a psychological exam."

and then they have to undergo regular re-evaluation to maintain their certification.

This is Trump talking at the same level of understanding as when he suggested people injected bleach to get rid of Covid.

B2B25 · 30/01/2025 18:11

I still can't fathom how he ended up with another term in power tbh.

Bringmeahigherlove · 30/01/2025 17:39

Do you honestly think someone with severe intellectual or psychiatric disabilities would get that job?? Open your eyes. He is telling you loud and proud that people with disabilities deserve low paid and low skilled jobs.

Hell the fuck no. Unless of course you are a democrat and an immigrant which I’m sure he will tell us next that they are.

I didn't write the recruitment policy, they were the ones who decided to attempt to recruit to meet shortfalls in targets, not me.

YesItsMe44 · 30/01/2025 18:12

I've not read the complete thread, but having had a close friend, and a nephew working as air traffic controllers, it's not an easy job to get. On the job you're required to take regular breaks (not a coffee break) away from the control room, etc. There are rules and regulations in place that make it almost impossible (99.99% impossible) to just "tick a box" and hire a random individual for the job. Trump is just rambling nonsense as usual. And "a sick slim majority" voted for him, NOT the entire US voting population. I did not vote for him.

Abhannmor · 30/01/2025 18:12

Fox is still the gold standard for wired to the moon conspiracy theories I think. GBH news is only trotting after them.
My bet : Obama was flying the helicopter. That guy you think is Obama is just a hologram. OK it'll need work....

fromthevault · 30/01/2025 18:12

There are a LOT of people here who really need to google 'unconscious bias'.

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 30/01/2025 18:12

@AlisonDonut as I informed you on another thread a couple of weeks back when you claimed the FAA was hiring visually impaired black pilots because woke, the FAA diversity policy is about not discriminating on disability re. back office staff (e.g. accountants etc). Since you are still posting the same rubbish, I will draw my own conclusions about your intentions.

Do you think they recruit people who aren’t capable of doing the job?

Yes.
They promoted a middle manager with many protected characteristics to CEO in our company - we were all stunned - now every company meeting starts with pop songs, in-jokes that most staff don't know and photos of cats. Oh, and just basic, skimmed over financial carts.

Do you think any are? Or is it more likely he’s an evil, lying scumbag? What with the balance of prior evidence and all…

SerendipityJane · 30/01/2025 18:14

Maybe a thread needs to be started here ? "AIBU to put off flying to the US ?"

If you worked for the FAA, this anecdote would be relevant

pointythings · 30/01/2025 18:14

Well, Tracingwoodgrains.com is the ramblings of one guy, so hardly a creditable source. As for hiring people with visual impairments to be pilots and ATCs - you do realise that wearing glasses is classed as visual impairment? And that one of the criteria for hiring someone for the job is that they pass sight tests proving that wearing glasses corrects their vision to the point where it is no different from someone with perfect eyesight.

As for DEI hiring - I work in the NHS. Our job applications when they come to the shortlisting panel have all the identifying stuff stripped out - age, gender etc. and the shortlisting is based on the rest of it. People who meet the job and person spec and have the top applications are then shortlisted for interview. At interview, the highest scoring candidate gets the job. It is only where two people who are equally qualified and equally good at interview exist that diversity becomes a consideration. I very much doubt it's all that different in the US.

Honestly, the Trump apologists on this thread ought to be ashamed.

Georgyporky · 30/01/2025 18:14

"Do you think people with "severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities" should be air traffic controllers?"

I don't think they should be President.

Remember the case of the Swiss air traffic controller who was killed by the father who lost his entire family in the Überlingen mid-air collision?

I despise Trump, but air traffic controller is not a job for anyone with mental health issues. Sorry. The consequences of any mistake are just too catastrophic.

Again, do you think any are hired who do?

IkeaJesusChrist · 30/01/2025 18:14

Shame it wasn't Marine One.

MinnieBalloon · 30/01/2025 17:56

I think he’s right. We should not be hiring people in the name of diversity criteria. We should be hiring the best and most capable person for the job, regardless of sex, race etc.

The best person for any job then is a man then. There is no risk of him suddenly disappearing for months at a time - aka maternity leave. Why give a woman a job when you can hire a man? We need diversity.

Trump is a maniac.

It seemed to me like the ATC were doing their job as they were alerting the helicopter pilot to the plane ? It was the helicopter pilot at fault ? Did he have an intellectual issue ?

The problem is, two things can be true at once.
Trump is a fucking dick. A dangerous dick.
But that doesn't mean that ATC were not at fault. Has anyone listened to the audio? It's very confused, the ATC is clearly under a lot of stress and the Heli pilot is shocked/surprised at the instructions received from ATC which include 'Return to base', to which the pilot replies 'What?'. The military flight should have had a pre agreed flight course/height but the commercial flight is asked to change course by ATC, which it seems took them in to collision course with the military aircraft. I guess there will be a thorough investigation that will decide whether or not ATC were at fault or not.
None of which means the rest of what Trump is spouting is true.
In any case, an awful disaster and RIP to all of those involved and condolences to their families. Awful.

Complete red herring. No evidence that this affected the accident this week in any way. The man’s just spouting off to troll. Your intent might not be the same, but it can come across that way.

I didn't mention the colour of pilots and I have no recall of your response so it can't have been that memorable.

To be honest though, you can just Google it, it was reported at the time. It's not my policy, and it wasn't my news report. I'm just pointing out that this isn't just made up, it was an actual thing.

Yes. Maybe not the best time to fly to the US then.

Boomer55 · 30/01/2025 18:16

As ever, there needs to be a full investigation before its possible to say what caused it.
