Trump's Theory about the Plane Crash

Just watched his press conference in absolute disbelief. He's just blamed the air traffic controllers as apparently under the Biden administration they recruited people into the role who weren't intellectually capable. He actually blames diversity criteria and basically box ticking.... 'hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities' - that's a direct quote.

As someone with ASD, anxiety and depression who works in a high level, highly skilled role, I am angry on behalf of anyone like me.

The man is a dangerous liar.

Bloody cheek. It was Republican President Reagan who sacked 11, 000 striking air traffic controllers and banned them from public service for life. They were replaced by a mixture of military officers , managers and partly trained staff. But yeah this is all on gays or immigrants or Biden. He is beneath contempt. No respect for the dead and bereaved.

Do you think they recruit people who aren’t capable of doing the job?

Well Trump is US president so………………..

The article does not say what roles were filled by people with intellectual disabilities and mental health problems. A gentleman with Down's syndrome was employed by a carbon fibre manufacturer when I worked there. The manufacturer made carbon fibre for cars, boats, etc. I expect you think the cars would fall apart on the road causing mass death with him working there. Only the gentleman worked keeping the factory clean and had nothing to do with manufacturing the fibre.

Hiring females is part of DEI too. When the program is done away with - and it will be - expect to see that glass ceiling replaced by a much lower concrete ceiling.

Yes I remember seeing at the time the report about hiring pilots and air traffic control candidates with visual impairments to meet DEI targets, but I didn't screenshot it at the time. I've mentioned it on here before and been called all sorts, so I guess that's another day of incoming rage at me for simply pointing this insanity out.

Turkeyneck101 · 30/01/2025 18:01

I think it's a given at this stage that if Trump says something...anything...its a lie or peppered with lies. He literally days before froze hiring of critical air traffic controllers so its to camouflage his own incompetence/mistake. Similar to his attempt to hijack federal money days ago which he has now had to back track on,. Its another shit show trump government.

As for his lie about the abilities of the personnel that is also bs to appeal to his base who do no research of their own. No person in the highly litigious America gets given a job that they can't physically do.

The scary thing is how many Americans will agree with every word he says.

Plenty of people on this thread, too. They walk among us.

Do you think people with "severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities" should be air traffic controllers?

Do you think they are?

ThatSchoolOfficeLady · 30/01/2025 18:01

Trump is an absolute loon. Welcome to the start of 4 years of chaos.

Of course not. A much better career in social media awaits them.

FrustratedandBemused · 30/01/2025 17:57

Do you think a press conference less than 24 hours after a devastating tragedy, which currently no one knows the cause of, was the time to raise this issue?

Yes. It highlights how fucking stupid a policy it was in the first place.

We need to be removing diversity and inclusivity criteria from all job roles. The best person for the job should get it - regardless of sex, race etc.

If you’re not the best, get better. Don’t blame your sex, race, disability etc. If you are given a job simply because you fit a diversity criteria then you don’t deserve it.

Ahh, the New York Post. Like the Mail or the Sun, but without the tolerance of the former or the common decency of the latter.

If it was really the case that people in such a vital and responsible role were recruited merely as a "diversity box ticking exercise" during the Biden years then surely planes would have been crashing fairly regularly. Trump is a truly repellent creature, who recalls him making mock of a disabled man?

This should have been enough to end anyone's career but here we are and he is only going to become more gross

That’s a very good point.
Trump basically is so up his own asshole he can’t see it though.

Same. It’s absolute madness. You’d think the main criteria for traffic controllers would be good eyesight. Whilst some people think disability should never be a barrier, it definitely should be for certain jobs.

We should wait for the Fox News coverage.

(Also we know GBNews are going to find a way to make entertainment out of this. It is literally what they do).

what an awful man,
shocking he is president

Are air traffic control in charge of Airforce 1's flight path, or at least making sure stuff stays out of its way? Not dudes you'd want to piss off really.

Matilda761 · 30/01/2025 18:07

Is he saying that air traffic controllers can’t do their jobs because of eg a disability? Or is he saying that an individual who lacked the intense concentration, intelligence and logical thinking needed for the role was hired anyway ‘because’ they ticked a diversity / disability box?

mitogoshigg · 30/01/2025 18:08

Unfortunately with every press conference he is proving he lacks the capacity to understand the things he needs to. His comments on this sad incident are embarrassing quite frankly. So unstatesman like. It's pretty obvious the cause of the crash and diversity programmes at air traffic control have nothing to do with it. The only place to look for clues is that helicopter

So presumably Trump is grounded until he has sorted out their issues ?

Maybe the Israeli PM should postpone his visit until US ATC has been given a clean bill of health. You really can't be to careful.

MinnieBalloon · 30/01/2025 17:56

I think he’s right. We should not be hiring people in the name of diversity criteria. We should be hiring the best and most capable person for the job, regardless of sex, race etc.

But the point of EDI is that often white men appear to be the "best and most capable person for the job" as 1) they tend to be more likely to apply for jobs (particular higher roles) 2) they often interview better due to their confidence/mannerisms/self-belief and 3) they often have better CVs as they haven't taken time out of work / worked part-time for childcare/ caring responsibilities. So hiring the "best and most capable person for the job" usually involves a bias towards hiring white males.

Pallisers · 30/01/2025 18:09

I agree with this. It has been exhausting for the past decade listening to white people - especially white men - whining about how they are the best but didn't get the job. Just get better for god's sake.

Mind you, maybe they have a point. Like, when there were no DEI requirements the majority of the big important jobs - well all jobs really except the shite one - went to white men. So thinking logically that must mean that women and people of colour just aren't good enough. Terrible to think these people were put into jobs they were simply incapable of performing because of DEI when we could have had a perfectly competent white man instead.

FrustratedandBemused · 30/01/2025 17:54

Hang on, are you saying that because occurrences like this are rare, the air traffic controllers involved must have had ‘severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities’?

No. I'm saying that the evidence that they're recruiting people who are capable of the job - which is the question that was asked - is that the job is done so incredibly safely. And it's done that way so close to invariably that it's 100%, to all intents and purposes.

Even in this case, I don't think that we can say that it's an air traffic controller mistake. And there's no reason at all to believe that the air traffic controllers had any disabilities. We're only discussing it because the suggestion was made, without foundation, by someone who really does have intellectual and psychiatric disabilities.
