Trump's Theory about the Plane Crash

Just watched his press conference in absolute disbelief. He's just blamed the air traffic controllers as apparently under the Biden administration they recruited people into the role who weren't intellectually capable. He actually blames diversity criteria and basically box ticking.... 'hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities' - that's a direct quote.

As someone with ASD, anxiety and depression who works in a high level, highly skilled role, I am angry on behalf of anyone like me.

The man is a dangerous liar.

Yes, if there is a baseline of 60 that all applicants have to achieve and there is evidence that people on 65 have faced systemic hurdles that people on 66 have not, since that means that all other things being equal the people on 65 probably have more raw talent and will achieve more once the systemic barriers are removed.

And what if you don't have any such evidence? Your test is a good measure of potential and the people who get lower marks will on average struggle and make more mistakes than those with higher scores?

Your example seems to be an argument for revamping the test more than anything.

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 31/01/2025 15:02

If for any reason any applicant fails to achieve the minimum standard, they fail. No-one is waving diversity hires through into safety-critical jobs.

Right so, bare minimum standard if you have an underrepresented characteristic, actual competition for others.

This is a terrible idea and is illegal in the UK. I hope you're not involved in recruitment

SerendipityJane · 31/01/2025 15:06

Like I said, this isn’t a college DEI department or HR. This is your life and my life. Why should we be put at risk so somebody can hit their diversity targets?

Are there people calling for flights to be grounded, and urging people not to fly ?

If not, then for all the frothing here and in the US, nobody is really buying this crock of horseshit that was parked on a mound of bollocks. Which means this discussion is pointlessly upsetting to many for no reason.

I will actually defend the poster - I think it was @Princessconsuelabananahammock9(?).

People are very emotional right now and, to be fair, @SerendipityJane you do have a very dry sense of humour (which I appreciate)

This is true. I could use that sense of humour as a towel when I shower.

We are talking about it now, aren’t we? And there’s been several near misses in the last few years (you can check that).

We don’t know if DEI is a direct cause here. But there are signs that it is suboptimal and a concerted effort for
color-blind, merit-based testing should be paramount.

RingoJuice · 31/01/2025 15:22

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 31/01/2025 14:53

Let's say you have an aptitude test which produces a score from 0-100.
Do you think it is acceptable for those with a lower score to be recruited over those with a higher score if they have an underrepresented characteristic?

Yes, if there is a baseline of 60 that all applicants have to achieve and there is evidence that people on 65 have faced systemic hurdles that people on 66 have not, since that means that all other things being equal the people on 65 probably have more raw talent and will achieve more once the systemic barriers are removed.

I really don’t think this is true and anyway, at the testing stage is NOT the time to do this

Any particular reason you think people from diverse backgrounds would only reach bare minimum standard?

You skipped over the first point I was making.

If no one is grounding flights.
If no one is urging people not to fly.

Then - despite all this frothing hysteria - the real world (you know, where Trump'n'Pump clearly do not live) has already performed it's own investigation and decided that the 47th POTUS is so full of shit it can be smelled across a 4,000 mile ocean.

There is no middle ground here. You either have faith and will fly, or you don't and won't.

I made this point yesterday. And the fact it is the one thing nobody is talking about speaks volumes about what is really going on here. And it has fuck all to do with air safety.

No - that is what I understand you to be suggesting and advocating for. You are suggesting checking people meet the minimum and prioritising diversity.

I want merit-based hiring and admissions, with characteristics either not mattering at all or only being used in rare cases of a tie.

itsgettingweird · 31/01/2025 16:10

Yes. So it’s for Air Traffic Controller jobs, those with targeted disabilities. That’s what the programme was for.

And that's NOT a problem because those on the program had to pass the same tests as everyone else.

Not all disabilities affect intellect and ability to do some jobs.

My ds has a degenerative neuromuscular condition and autism. He codes stuff used internationally.

Programs like this are designed for people like ds whereby the first thing someone sees is the wheelchair and asd dx. Where actually you have a highly intelligent person with an amazing mind who just so happens to be crap at small talk and can't walk most of the time!

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 31/01/2025 16:17

Sorry @SerendipityJane I did not get the sarcasm. I have read so much racist shit on here I cant tell the difference anymore.

@snugsnug1 Thanks for looking out for me. 😉

@RingoJuice I'm still waiting for you to explain on another thread why you think black people are more violent than white people?

Honestly, some people will be thrilled if it is a minority person who is blamed. Apparently only white men qualify for these jobs on thier own merit. Ironic since historically white men were given jobs based on the fact they were white men,

There already was speculation about the identity of the pilot on another MN thread.

AlisonDonut · 31/01/2025 16:41

The speculation was from twitter and the person being speculated about has produced a 'proof of life' video today.

Perhaps we shouldn't speculate, bearing in mind what this whole thread is about? It's a bit unfair to the person who was accused of deliberately flying a helicopter into the plane earlier today.

You really did miss the point.

The post I quoted said that some people would be thrilled if a minority person was involved.

Twitter speculated and a thread was started on MN.

For some reason

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 31/01/2025 17:03

I'm pretty sure Trump started the speculations.

Yes I got that.

You failed to mention that the speculation has already been shown to be incorrect by the person in question producing a video saying it wasn't them. And it wasn't started by a mumsnetter, it was started on twitter, a thread started on here and it was already deleted hours ago.

The thread on Mumsnet was started by a Mumsnetter.

It got deleted - but you are missing the point that someone saw speculation about the identity of the person, got excited* because of that identity, didn't have any evidence that it was true but started the thread anyway.

For some reason

*I might be speculating here...who knows why they decided to start a thread

cakeorwine · 31/01/2025 17:11

I mean some people might have waited to verify any facts before starting a thread about someone...

But who needs facts anymore..

Turkeyneck101 · 31/01/2025 17:18

Totally wrong to ( or encourage others to) speculate who or what was responsible without an investigation. Someone should tell trump.

I have no idea who started it, or why the thread was started.

It’s embarrassing the lengths people will go to claim that it’s normal for those with serious intellectual disabilities, paralysis etc should be in Air Traffic Control.

No one believes that. Embarrassing

Why shouldn't someone with paralysis be in WTC?

My son has paralysis in one leg. He's a wheelchair user.

He has an IQ above 120 so in the exceptional range.

The fact his leg doesn't work doesn't prevent him being able to see and think 🤦‍♀️

You talked about Twitter.

I was referring to the thread on MN that came from that Twitter thread and speculated about the identity of the pilot.

The post I quoted talked about people being thrilled if a minority person was to blame.

Clearly you and I both know the thread we are talking about. And the minority group.

And yet you can't think of a reason why it was started ? (Clue - people being thrilled if a minority person was to blame)
