Trump's Theory about the Plane Crash

Just watched his press conference in absolute disbelief. He's just blamed the air traffic controllers as apparently under the Biden administration they recruited people into the role who weren't intellectually capable. He actually blames diversity criteria and basically box ticking.... 'hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities' - that's a direct quote.

As someone with ASD, anxiety and depression who works in a high level, highly skilled role, I am angry on behalf of anyone like me.

The man is a dangerous liar.

Well, it certainly doesn’t make me think they should be hired for any important jobs. It really isn’t rocket science!

Who shouldn’t? People who aren’t white males but have all the same qualifications and skills? Why not?

Mrsdyna · 30/01/2025 20:50

cardibach · 30/01/2025 20:48

Because white men get all the advantages. I think you may have a lot of internalised misogyny if you think the man is always better

Once again, never said that. Stop repeatedly trying to force a point onto me.

cakeorwine · 30/01/2025 20:51

If the population is 50% female but your workforce is 5% female, maybe you should ask why?

Now if you have a man and a woman who are both capable at doing the job, is it wrong to give it to the woman?

You did though. You said that it’s not ‘fair’ to give non-white, non-males a chance if they are equally as qualified as the white male (despite having faced prejudice to get where they are).
It’s not me that’s pathetic, incidentally

I said it's not fair to choose based on anything but merit and once again you keep trying to force me to have a point of view that I don't have because you have nothing else.

So why do you think people who aren’t white males but have all the skulls and qualifications shouldn’t be given the job occasionally? Because that’s what you have said.

[From someone with a healthy interest in politics] I'm entirely indifferent to Trump (as I essentially am to the dozens of other leaders of countries I don't live in), thus I couldn't tell you ANY detail of what he has said since inauguration (never mind a day to day summation!). If he stimulates despair and revulsion in you, it won't be difficult to avoid seeing/hearing him. One could be forgiven for thinking you're seeking to be offended.

Or, you know, we take an interest on what's happening in the world around us given that it could very likely have an impact on what is going to happen in our own country...

You know that there isn’t one golden person with the best skills and merit for a job surely? If you have several, you should give a diverse range a chance over time. That’s DEi.

Because the hiring shouldn't be about any of that to begin with. It shouldn't matter at all, but clearly to people like you, pigeonholing is incredibly important.

Maybe a thread needs to be started here ? "AIBU to put off flying to the US ?"

Yes! That would be telling.

Not one person who believes we have visually impaired minority staff working at ATC etc would be getting on a plane - ever again!

Do you think people with "severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities" should be air traffic controllers?

He's fucking lying. Do you really think that people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities would be recruited and trained as air traffic controllers?

SpidersAreShitheads · 30/01/2025 20:55

Mrsdyna · 30/01/2025 20:41

Hire based on skill and then there would be nothing to question around that aspect.

How do you objectively define "skill" while ensuring you're disregarding unconscious bias?

Unconscious bias causes people to unknowingly attach different values to skills, experience etc which accurately reflect their background and previous experiences. You can have the very best of intentions to be fair and even-handed, and still have your judgement impacted by unconscious bias.

A PP mentioned that when a blind recruitment was done with all characteristics removed, FEWER white men were hired - more people who met DEI characteristics were hired. But when you remove DEI drives, that recruitment split isn't reflected in real life. Partially due to unconscious bias, but with a big dose of conscious discrimination thrown in too.

It's why white, straight men still have the advantage. That's why DEI is unfortunately still important. I heard a recent study suggest that the largest beneficiary of DEI hires has been women - I wonder what will happen for women under Trump's term in office.

A DEI hire doesn't mean someone doesn't have the skills - it just means that someone with the right attributes/skills but isn't a white bloke is given the job.

Read about the biographical questionnaire. This wasn't ordinary DEI hiring.

All the evidence is pointing towards the helicopter being the issue, and military helicopters are not controlled by ATC according to reports in the news, so there is no indication ATC was at fault let alone that it was due to diversity policies FFS

I’m not sure what is meant there by military helicopters “not being controlled by ATC..”

The helicopter last night was in controlled airspace (albeit on a defined helicopter route) and so subject to ATC instructions, ie. under the control of ATC.

It’s how the crew acted on those instructions that might have been the problem.

No, you are wilfully misinterpreting.
You advertise a job.
10000 apply
10 are suitably qualified and experienced.
At interview, you get that down to 5.
The general population is 52% female. Your workforce is 5% female.
1 of the 5 brilliant candidates is female.
who do you give the job to? They are all equally perfect for it.

Actually having a workforce that is representative of the population is incredibly useful, but that's a whole different thread. You seem unable to grasp that it is possible to have mutiple candidates who are all equally skilled, experienced and qualified. In that situation, why would you be so against balancing your workforce so that it is more representative and varied? You're still getting the best person for the job.

FrankieStein403 · 30/01/2025 20:58

Nothing to do with dei - US atc operations permit controllers to ask/give visual separation at night.

Fine in the middle of nevada but crazy in somewhere like washington with so many lights around - plus at this field they allow military traffic to cross the civilian approach at the same height.

The sole reason the military field is there, so close to the civil runway, is to allow politicos to have a quicker flight home - that's what PAT means 'priority air traffic' - this was a check flight - otherwise there would have been senators on board.

EmmaMaria · 30/01/2025 20:58

Well if you can be President with "severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities", why can't you be an air traffic controller?

No I don't agree that even if all is equal, the diverse candidate should be picked for certain. It's an unfair policy from the off and should've never been introduced.

The Sky news correspondent suggested that Trump had been given preliminary details of the cause; whether or not it was wise at this juncture for Trump to reference the cause is another matter. He makes his own calls on etiquette though, he's not known to be guarded. So if it IS the case that this disaster was preventable, you'd expect him to reference that from the get go.

Trump fires head of TSA and coastguard, this happens a few days later..seems like trump is grasping at deflecting any responsibility from himself. Immediately jumps on DEI as an excuse. To say what's a fact before a full investigation is stupid beyond belief.

TheGander · 30/01/2025 20:58

He also said the LA fires were due to environmental policies. He’s flinging mud at anything and playing to the gallery. So much bad faith.

I don't think it should matter or even exist in hiring protocols.

And if the woman or the person who is a member of an under represented group gets the job, then it's likely that people like Trump will think they got the job not because they are perfectly capable of doing it but because they are a woman or because they are a member of a minority group.
