Trump's Theory about the Plane Crash

Just watched his press conference in absolute disbelief. He's just blamed the air traffic controllers as apparently under the Biden administration they recruited people into the role who weren't intellectually capable. He actually blames diversity criteria and basically box ticking.... 'hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities' - that's a direct quote.

As someone with ASD, anxiety and depression who works in a high level, highly skilled role, I am angry on behalf of anyone like me.

The man is a dangerous liar.

No I don't agree that even if all is equal, the diverse candidate should be picked for certain. It's an unfair policy from the off and should've never been introduced.

Can you expla8n why you wouldn’t try to have a representative workforce if the candidates were all good enough? We aren’t talking about all black disabled women here, but about something that reflects the general population. Why wouldn’t you?

I don't think it should matter or even exist in hiring protocols.

So who do you give the job to? Or do you do a coin toss?

vandel · 30/01/2025 21:01

@notimagain Point taken - I see from your posts that you have aviation experience so you obviously know your stuff. I suppose as a non aviator reading the news outlets and listening to reports, the message seemed to be that this was a training flight, so in my (and probably others) mind the crew appeared to be inexperienced, albeit with a veteran pilot on board.

I didn't mean to denigrate anyone for their inexperience. It was an awful tragedy no matter what the outcome of the investigations.

Classic Trump misdirection. We’re distracted by a conversation about DEI, when, in fact, “In the 10 days since Trump’s inauguration, his administration froze the hiring of additional air traffic controllers, gutted key air safety protections, and fired FAA leadership…” https://time.com/7211690/washington-dc-plane-crash-trump-aviation/ Stop looking where he’s pointing.

DrDoctor · 30/01/2025 21:01

I don't think they are. Even though one has made it to President, ATC has much tighter controls on its appointees.

I don't think it should matter or even exist in hiring protocols.

People exist in hiring protocols. 2 people are equally qualified. One is from a group under represented in your work force. Given that any choice will be arbitrary as they are both equally perfect for the job, why wouldn’t you choose the underrepresented person?

gloriagloria · 30/01/2025 21:03

We’ve got another four years of this continuous shit. I’m going to have to learn to zone out for my own sanity.

Hire based on skill and then there would be nothing to question around that aspect.

Diversity hiring IS hiring based on skill.

Let me break this down for you with a made up example.

Five people apply for a job.

Four are interviewed and two shine out. Both have the right qualities, skills and knowledge to do the job well. Both came across really well at interview and both are appointable to the same extent.

One is a tall, able bodied white man with a sharp suit and a posh voice.

The other is one of the following;

  • Has a disability
  • is a woman
  • has brown skin
  • comes from a deprived area and it shows in their voice and clothes

Often the top jobs were held by tall white middle class men, who would (consciously or unconsciously) pick other tall white middle class men. So the cycle would repeat and equally capable people that didn’t fit that bill wouldn’t get chosen. This has led to massive inequality (women are still under representated and paid less).

Policies are now in place to ensure that the work place reflects the diversity of the population. So in the example above (unless your company already reflected the diversity of the population at all levels) you would pick the second candidate rather than going down the white middle class male route.

Once diversity is fully reflected at all layers and inequality eradicated may be be we can quit doing this.

Diversity wouldn't be the deciding factor for a job hire. It is inappropriate for hiring protocol to begin with in my opinion.

cardibach · 30/01/2025 21:03

That doesn’t suggest they weren’t good at science by the time they applied.

Any chance of you answering my question about how you would decide then? Coin toss?

Of course in real life, the two equally qualified, skilled and experienced candidates aren't equal at all. The one who is not white and male will have had to work harder and overcome greater hurdles to get to where they are, so may well be the better hire.

If a company's workforce is not diverse, does that raise questions about that company's hiring protocols?

EaglesWings · 30/01/2025 21:07

The issue is that he states lies, untruths and exaggeration as if they are absolute facts!

If I were an American I’d be very worried about the new President, he seems reckless in his approach to real issues that affect real people.

Absolutely!!!

I’ll give this to Trump, he’s so f-Ing transparent. He’s like a toddler covered in chocolate shouting really loudly he didn’t eat the chocolate - the cat did!!

Warmhandscoldheart · 30/01/2025 21:07

Trump is a despicable being who has no moral compass. People have lost their lives and he doesn't give a shit

daisychain01 · 30/01/2025 21:07

Lilifer · 30/01/2025 17:07

Do you think people with "severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities" should be air traffic controllers?

That's completely missing the point of Trump's rambling.

He created a direct causal relationship between people recruited through DEI schemes during Biden's administration and the air crash.

That's a completely appalling claim, based on zero knowledge or insight, because he thinks he walks on water and whatever shit that comes out of his mouth is the gospel truth that everyone has to be deferential to. He's delusional

No, I don't think it was a productive question so I'm not going to engage with it.

Yes.
They promoted a middle manager with many protected characteristics to CEO in our company - we were all stunned - now every company meeting starts with pop songs, in-jokes that most staff don't know and photos of cats. Oh, and just basic, skimmed over financial carts.

Who shouldn’t? People who aren’t white males but have all the same qualifications and skills? Why not?

No. The people on here that don’t seem to understand the basics of diversity hiring. It’s really so simple.

It could do yes, if they're deliberately not hiring people because of diversity then I agree that that's also unfair.

Of course people shouldn't be chosen or discarded because of diversity. Both are problematic in my opinion.

Atlasvue · 30/01/2025 21:11

It’s embarrassing to see posters exclaim outrage, but have you actually looked it up? Thought not.

The FAA had a programme that aimed to get those with targeted disabilities into Air Traffic Control. These targeted disabilities included:
hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism.

https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/faa-provides-aviation-careers-people-disabilities

Theres even a court case to be heard by those claiming they were discriminated against by allowing such a programme.

That doesn’t mean that this was the cause of the crash, but don’t pretend that this policy wasn’t real.

I know. I had thought I might give up following the news for four years but it’s just so compelling. It just defies belief that he’s been chosen for one of, if not the, most powerful jobs in the world.
