Your 'old lady' habits/tastes ;)

Do you like footspa? Have a crush on Alan Titchmarsh?

I'm 47 and I like to get Kriss Kross puzzle books when I go on holiday, I think their main market is the over 70s. I also like Fenjal bubble bath which I'm sure is rather an old lady thing.

Old ladies also welcome to add their old lady habits too! 😁

I’m in my 70s. I have a new job contract and a much younger chap. I enjoy watching drug and gang thrillers on Netflix.

Shirley Conran said that life is too short to stuff a mushroom. It’s also too short to bother about lining your drawers and listening to The Archers.

SabreIsMyFave · 16/01/2025 19:38

Going for long walks in the countryside.

Taking photographs of 'nature,' (trees, canals, rivers, hills, mountains,) and also birds and animals.

Feeding the birds, and the hedgehogs/wild animals.

Doing crosswords, and jigsaws, and going to the bingo. (Never went til I hit 50! Now late 50s)

Moaning and ranting at half of the ads on the TV because many of them annoy me!

Nosing out of the window whenever I hear a car door go (or if I hear voices.)

Sandals in the summer.

Going to museums and heritage sites.

Drinking port (and brandy!) Not much, like 2-3 times a month, but I do enjoy it!

Stellar thread thanks @Echobelly 😆

Loveaglassofsherry · 16/01/2025 19:38

And an electric blanket obvs.

MyNamesGaryAndImAddictedToChips · 16/01/2025 19:39

Shinyandnew1 · 16/01/2025 18:48

I like a sherry! And a scarf as my neck gets cold.

Also,

Heated blanket
Wooly hat
Astral face cream

Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes!

Thegreenandpurpleone · 16/01/2025 19:39

Jigsaws, NY Times puzzles, afternoon naps (min 2 hours), milky tea, bed at 9.30pm, never going out on New Year’s Eve ever again (after last year’s debacle). I’m 44 and love it.

m00rfarm · 16/01/2025 19:39

Stretchy waistbands.

Don't know if it really classes as an old lady thing but I have religiously watched Antiques Roadshow most Sundays since I was a tiddler. Mum used to iron to it, and now I do the same. Pavlov's dog reaction and habit more than enjoyment but it is a family ritual.

I still love it as well. Songs of Praise followed by Antiques Roadshow.

Thegreenandpurpleone · 16/01/2025 19:40

Also, flat shoes always…

cardibach · 16/01/2025 19:41

EBearhug · 16/01/2025 18:49

I like Badedas.

I did my ironing pile on Tuesday and my mending pile last night. I've also paid something with a cheque in the last 3 months.

How? I haven’t owned a cheque book for at least 5 years, probably more (I’m 60 for reference).

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 16/01/2025 19:41

You had me at Fenjal!

Fenjal and Badedas- love ‘em both and good ol’ Pears soap.
4711 cologne! My dad wore it. His sister wore it. My grandmother wore it. I wear it. I use the bar soap too. Love it! It’s the poor man’s Acqua di Parma (which I also wear) but it’s even nicer. It’s classy, classic, affordable, wonderful smelling.
Electric blankets and electric mattress warmers! I’m under mine now.
Ecco shoes (better for me than Skechers, which actually are heaven by the way).
History Hit podcast
The Rest is History podcast
Cooking/Chef podcasts (anything with Claudia Roden- there aren’t many but she’s a gem to listen to)
Gardening
Cat everything!
Astronomy/star gazing
Almanacs

Comedycook · 16/01/2025 19:41

I love a wander around a stately home followed by a trip to the cafe for a piece of cake and a cuppa.

Strictlymad · 16/01/2025 19:42

Early 30s
love period dramas, garden centres, jigsaws, a cosy evening and an early night!!

Gowlett · 16/01/2025 19:42

I do like Badedas…

Battenberg Cake.

Jazzy trainers, the sort of matte gold minor platform ones.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 16/01/2025 19:42

I have this painting in a large, ornate, gilt frame in my hallway and love it an unreasonable amount 🙈

evtheria · 16/01/2025 18:52

I loooooove parmaviolet sweets.

Oh I hadn't realised that classed me as an old lady. I've had some today Grin

Also enjoy a glass of Port occasionally on a Winter's night.

dynamiccactus · 16/01/2025 19:42

I had a V pillow when I was pregnant and then I was able to use it to stop ds falling off the bed when he was a baby. I didn't know they were an old lady thing, I should have kept it!

I don't like driving in the dark.

I am an NT and Historic Scotland member (and the local wildlife trust)

I have Rieker boots and Hotter sandals.

But I hate jigsaws and gardening, can't remember how to crochet and am the world's worst at knitting (I can cast on but not cast off, which is a bit of a problem!)

godmum56 · 16/01/2025 19:42

HopefulBeliever · 16/01/2025 19:38

Listening to Buddy Holly etc
A nice trip to a farm shop
Love a great afternoon nap
Recently changed to big knickers - so comfy
OXO cubes

I had to give up on oxo cubes when they reduced the salt in them and added MSG. It gives me headaches.

Plawp · 16/01/2025 19:43

A book of arrow/crosswords and a nice pen
Tea from a teapot
Cross stitching/embroidery
A pleasant cardigan
Listening to The Corries
Pavers slippers
A collection of decorative cat plates on the wall
Velcro shoes, inherited from my nan (amazing on the school run in the winter!)
Homemade parkin
Many supportive pillows of differing shapes and sizes
A wide array of dressing gowns
One of those long grabbing sticks and a long shoehorn

I’m in my 30s 😀

Creepybookworm · 16/01/2025 19:43

50....like jigsaws, cross stich and Arrowords. Lots of people talk at me during work so I need to decompress.

notanaskhole · 16/01/2025 19:43

girlwhowearsglasses · 16/01/2025 19:06

Yes to Fenjal
jigsaws are the latest in our house too

I’ve never liked jigsaws, but I’m a nursery teacher and today I helped a 3-year old with a 50 pieces jigsaw. I was quite impressed by myself actually! Not as good as the 3-year old obviously, but pretty good.

NordicwithTeen · 16/01/2025 19:45

Mid 40s and have taken up sewing, having car sweets, long dog walks listening to Woman's Hour while wearing a fleece (shock horror!), get excited about "splurging" on treats such as extra long Henry Hoover nozzle attachments (thank you MN!) and also can now nap for more than 20mins at a time and still sleep at night. Having to shave my face with a dermaplane.

MissDeborah · 16/01/2025 19:45

Crikeyalmighty · 16/01/2025 19:47

@borntobequiet you go girl!! Sounds fab - I do agree about lining drawers etc - I think some find it a comforting habit because their lovely mums/nans did it -a link with the past -

Nomorecountingbeans · 16/01/2025 19:47
