Your 'old lady' habits/tastes ;)

Do you like footspa? Have a crush on Alan Titchmarsh?

I'm 47 and I like to get Kriss Kross puzzle books when I go on holiday, I think their main market is the over 70s. I also like Fenjal bubble bath which I'm sure is rather an old lady thing.

Old ladies also welcome to add their old lady habits too! 😁

I'm loving this thread!

I am surgically attached to my hot water bottle... Even at work..
Refuse point blank to go out at night,
My favourite thing is being on the sofa with my cat and blanket and aforementioned hwb watching a scandi drama,
Love shield soap, don't like these new fangled shower gels.
I secretly stockpile flash blue bathroom cleaner...

I am the proud owner of a collection of electric heat pads I carry round the house, my old arthritic joints need constant heat even in summer. I expanded my collection this week to include the Silver Crest heated pillow for when I’m WFH at the bottom of my back.

I adore a garden centre visit, we go every weekend in spring/summer. Went for my birthday day out last year. I used to despise Alan Titchmarsh in the GroundForce Days but I think that’s because my DF was also a landscape gardener yet we weren’t famous for it! Now I love a cup of tea watching Love Your Weekend. I particularly like the instrumental bit in the middle with the wildlife photography. I’m also 37 🤪

I like Badedas.

I did my ironing pile on Tuesday and my mending pile last night. I've also paid something with a cheque in the last 3 months.

I have neither an ironing pile (I don’t buy clothes that need ironing or if it’s something for an event I get my husband to do it) nor a mending pile nor a cheque book so I’m relieved to learn I’m still far from old age 🤣

I love winter, when ironed clothes don't matter. Or bras. But My summer clothes are all ones that need it. I have a mending pile as I don't chuck out perfectly good clothes. As for the cheque book, I'm in Australia and HMRC is only very slowly releasing its grip on the cheque.

Until the age of 40ish I lived a very hedonistic lifestyle.
Nobody I knew then would believe 15 years later I would be t-total, have classical music on my playlists (along with heavy metal, 70s rock etc) , that I've taken up knitting and have more wool than a flock of sheep and have a massive collection of house plants!
I now go to bed at 9 most nights, don't like going out in the dark and my favourite tipple is tea.
I'm still rocking a buzz cut & Docs though 🤣

Snowmanscarf · 26/01/2025 10:53

I love how on this thread, people are embracing ‘old lady’ habits, whilst going to Rock concerts, wearing dms etc. Best of both worlds.

Arran2024 · 26/01/2025 12:23

Currently watching 77 year old Ted Danson in Netflix's A Man on the Inside, which is set in a care home. And loving it.

IAmTheLittleThings · 26/01/2025 12:32

@ItGhoul I have to disagree with you about cribbage. My mum taught me as a child and my daughter learnt from mum & I playing as a child (we bought a 3 player board)
The only man I ever played against was my brother!
I mainly play on line now mum has gone sadly.

PoltergeistsStartLowKey · 26/01/2025 13:12

I'd do John Craven.

No. Just no.

I'm 76 but, as The Queen would say, I've still got plenty of snap left in my celery. However a really hot night out for me nowadays is late evening opening at the local library.

I've caught myself saying exactly the same things that used to cause me to roll my eyes when my mother said them many years ago.

Obviously big knickers – but then I've been wearing those for the past 50+ years (not the same pair).

I've developed a keen interest in the junk mail mobility aid catalogues that my postie keeps shoving through the letterbox. Haven't actually ordered anything yet but I suppose the time will come...

Otherwise much of what's already been mentioned in this thread with particular emphasis on bird feeding, garden centres and comfy cardigans.

My absolute favourite show of the last 10 years, easily!!
Very much hoping there will be a season 2.

Had Lemon Meringue drink this weekend, just a splash of vodka. Highly recommended. It was like a liquid piece of pie 🤩

I am a retired Occupational Therapist. Better to give up the slip on slippers altogether.

I recently ordered a lovely new pair of sheepskin house boots. Had current ones for over 5 years but they are starting to Go Home (there’s an Old Lady expression for you.)
No chance of them ever slipping off! I live in them indoors during the cold months.

Mydoglovescheese · 30/01/2025 12:51

@Echobelly I'm a bit late to the party, but loving this thread.
Your comment about difficulty putting on shoes made me chuckle. My 14 year old GS uses a shoehorn which he gives me to use when I'm at his house. I refuse and tell him I'm not an old lady yet, although actually I am!

BBQPete · 30/01/2025 15:36

I never like to be too far from a nice cup of tea (called that, even though it has to be a mug).
I've always worn decent, comfortable knickers tbf, so not sure that's an 'old lady' thing.
Like pps, I inwardly tut when people dress so their underwear is on show.
I do like an afternoon nap every now and then (but again, have done for years, so not sure that's to do with getting older.

Sadly, I'm still waiting to develop an urge to do any gardening, let alone a love for it..... not sure when that kicks in ?

Snowmanscarf · 30/01/2025 16:39

Don’t think this is an old lady’s thing, as such, (maybe a pedants thing,), but I know you will appreciate it. I hate writing dates of births as numbers for the month. Don’t know why, but this grates on me big time.

ie. 30/01/24

i was not born in ‘1’ but in January, and I will usually write it as January where possible.

Edited

I had an American employer. I got into the habit of writing 30 Jan 24, because for anything under 12, they'd assume it was the month, and if I put 7/6/25, I'd have meant 7th June, and they'd read it as 6th July.

with me it kicked in aged about 4 so don't hold your breath!

Soap bars - last much longer and feel much cleaner than gel

Anything rose. I love the scent for soap, perfume, anything

Thermals. Leggings, tops, vests, socks, all of it

Of course tea. And a favourite mug.

Big cotton underwear - I remember my gran saying one should wear white cotton knickers to prevent thrush.

Appreciating a garden centre, and a tea/coffee with cake in the cafe.

Spending an afternoon having afternoon tea in a village tearoom

A nightly bath. With bath salts.

Long nightdresses

Hand cream (preferably rose scented)

Disappointing, I thought it kicked in, in retirement.

She was right about the knickers! These days of course we have other wicking fabrics but yeasts love a bit of damp heat.

Seymour5 · 31/01/2025 07:19

@witchycat2 I love anything rose scented, and lavender. I’ve even got some eau de cologne. I’m in my long nightdress at the moment, and I regularly meet my friend at a garden centre for coffee and a scone. I keep nicely scented bars of soap in my big knicker drawer. Deep joy.

squishee · 31/01/2025 08:06

Nowadays I put subtitles on to watch South Park in English.
Have a beanbag lap tray
Wear fluffy socks worn with massive furry slipper socks.
Wear bedsocks.
