Your 'old lady' habits/tastes ;)

Do you like footspa? Have a crush on Alan Titchmarsh?

I'm 47 and I like to get Kriss Kross puzzle books when I go on holiday, I think their main market is the over 70s. I also like Fenjal bubble bath which I'm sure is rather an old lady thing.

Old ladies also welcome to add their old lady habits too! 😁

I am addicted to Agatha Christie novels, have fluffy slippers, don’t understand quinoa and enjoy tutting at the behaviour of young persons.

I’m in my forties.

I've just started watching Vera, and I love AC

LeaveALittleNote · 16/01/2025 19:17

Warming my nightdress on the radiator before I put it on.
Always having a hot water bottle in bed.
Enjoying Horlicks (although I rarely buy it).
Mixing with people in their 70s and 80s. I’m a lot younger than that!
Being part of a local gardening club.
Having a house full of old furniture.
There’s a vase of carnations on my windowsill at the moment.
I like Werthers Originals.

AltitudeCheck · 16/01/2025 19:18

A blanket when I'm watching TV, ideally a cat or two on it as well
Tea in a teapot
Slippers
Wearing a scarf (not the wooly variety)
Glasses for reading/ tv /driving (and losing said glasses regularly!)
Puzzles
Audiobooks (so it doesn't matter if I can't remember where the glasses are!)
The Archers / R4
I am only late 40s!!

Meadowfinch · 16/01/2025 19:19

I have a blanket on the back of the sofa to pull around my shoulders while watching tv. And I don't like ds (16) swearing.

I sound increasingly like my mother. 😫

StopTalkingSoMuch · 16/01/2025 18:48

I'm an "old" lady of 65.

I hate -
Fenjal bubble baths
Footspas
Kriss Kross books
garden centres
Gardening programmes
Strictly Come Dancing, Bake Off, anything like that.
Any craft - crochet, knitting, lace work, etc.
Bingo

I DO like -
Rock music (favourite band is Linkin Park)
Very hot Indian food
Doc Martens
Ice skating

Edited

You and I have a lot in common, apart from the ice skating though.
I'm 61 and definitely not yet ready to be an old lady 😆

DramaAlpaca · 16/01/2025 19:19

I love a nap when I get home from work.

I enjoy a tipple of sherry, but only at Christmas.

My favourite day out is a trip to a garden centre.

KnopkaPixie · 16/01/2025 19:20

Being in a wonky knees and ankles subtle over ordering of ibuprofen gel from the doctors trilateral scam with my mum, Auntie Eileen and Cousin Anthony. It's turned into a kind of an international drug cartel situation as my mum labels it with ever more inventive descriptions at the Post Office to get past customs as I live in an undisclosed location overseas.

Mind you, she sends me all manner of things that are contraband and I don't know whether the Post Office person either doesn't have English as their first language/relies heavily on autocorrect or both and in the last few months I've had quite innocent packages from her with labels on that have said:

"Mental hooks" = That little key you get to open the hole on your phone for a SIM card.
"Christmas confetti." = Paxo Stuffing.

Thingymajigii · 16/01/2025 18:54

I didn't know that. I always considered 'old' to be something above 70..

I’m definitely old then!

WhereAreWeNow · 16/01/2025 19:21

Blanket in front of telly
Hot water bottle
Radio 4
Slips
Cardis
Big knickers

I'm fully embracing old ladydom and not ashamed.

toomuchcheesetoomuchchocolate · 16/01/2025 19:21

I have no idea what people are going to get me as presents when I'm in my dotage as I already have a foot massager thing, a heated blanket and a v pillow. They all make me very happy!

Echobelly · 16/01/2025 19:21

I'd better get into Sketchers. I have a bad hip and can currently get shoes on though my bad side is a pain but I'm going to need those ones you can step into before too long.

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/01/2025 19:22

@iamnotalemon even better is a nice sit down AND put your feet up.
@Liv999 I beg to disagree. I went to an informal sherry tasting event many moons ago at Harvey's and got banjaxed. I can't bear the stuff since that day.

Auburngal · 16/01/2025 19:22

I’m 44.

Do lots of older person stuff such as puzzle books, elasticated waistbands on trousers (whoever invented this is an unsung hero), full slippers, sherry, vermouth, listen to music recorded before i was born or too young to buy records. Who is going to listen to today’s music in 60 years time, let alone 60 weeks?

Then I do young people things like wear hoodies, play Football Manager, drink Stella, wear wacky socks.

Still watch the TV shows of my youth.

Tracystubbs · 16/01/2025 19:22

I own (and use) a shopping trolley

I asked (and got for Christmas) thick bed socks

I'm on the hunt for a bed jacket

I cringe at the postie when he appears wearing shorts when it's below freezing

The kids at work are younger than my youngest child

I'm proud of my grey hair

I'm seriously thinking of buying a walking stick for when my arthritis starts playing up

I'm 47 in april

BruceAndNosh · 16/01/2025 19:23

I was an Old Lady in my 20s. I'd go out clubbing and ask the DJ to turn the music down

That made me laugh.
When I was young I worked in a disco and I asked the management could he please turn the flashing lights off over the bar area....and he did.😆

Crikeyalmighty · 16/01/2025 19:26

@fetchacloth @StopTalkingSoMuch Me too - apart from the ice skating -I still work in rock music

I'm 63 and would add

I love Skechers
Rieker boots ( multiple pairs)
M&S and Waitrose food shopping but do love a good farm shop and we have lots within 10 miles of where I live
Love a comfy dining chair in restaurants
I Like velvet-chairs, tops, chokers - you name it

Toolardy · 16/01/2025 19:26

I was asked by a kid (while picking up grandkids) why I always carried a handbag. Looked around and yep I was the only one with a handbag. Must be an old lady thing. Annoying kid said her nan never carried one. Obviously more hip than me.

Snowmanscarf · 16/01/2025 19:26

Use ‘best’ dinner set at Christmas (we started collecting set when married - Royal Doulton)

Have a tablecloth, not a runner, on my table

Brought sherry at Christmas (but was too ill to drink it)

Love a good garden centre

SicParvisMagna · 16/01/2025 19:28

I prefer the peace and quiet of my garden to places with lots of people. I'm often found talking to the Robins like a crazy bird lady.
Loud noises, dogs constantly barking have me twitching the curtains.
My belongings are slowly being replaced by furniture my 14 year old says "is old lady stuff" (think anything wood that a lot of people would slap with paint and call shabby chic).
Radox bath salts are lovely.
I enjoy a nice pair of slippers and a blanket. Can't be doing with a chill.
I do like a nice decorative plate, and I'm quite fond of M&S's commemorative royal family biscuit tins. A trip to the garden centre is my fave day out.
I've recently discovered though that the thing that gets me excited is good bedding. I swear I spend 90% of my time lusting over sheets and bedding online. It's honestly weird.
All I know, is if I could go back in time to when my granny downsized her house, and keep everything she had to part with, I'd be queen of the cottage/antique core scene. Sadly I was 14 and a bit of a bellend so I didn't lol.

Finetoday · 16/01/2025 19:28

Great thread 😂

Hot water bottle and tea until it bubbles out of my ears.
And I get excited about knowing I don’t have to leave the house (and therefore my slippers) ALL day woohoo

Gwenhwyfar · 16/01/2025 19:28

Thingymajigii · 16/01/2025 18:54

I didn't know that. I always considered 'old' to be something above 70..

I've mainly seen it as over 60 although I've revised that as I myself have grown older and retirement age has risen. I think current 65 year olds are retired though.

I like Sketchers, but I refuse to see them as old lady shoes.
I sometimes browse Pavers and I admit that shop is for a different age group...

TaylorGuitar · 16/01/2025 19:29

I love a nice cup of teapot tea
G&T with Gordon's, Schweppes and lemon
Proper homemade trifle
Sturdy slippers
Extra blankets
Having things tucked in to keep my back warm
Having warm towels in the bathroom
Taking my insulated cup to bed with warm water in it so that it's not cold on my teeth in the night
Blue Nivea crème
Getting the washing out on the line
Having a nice chat with a friend

Auburngal · 16/01/2025 19:29

Skechers. Wow! I can’t be doing with heavy shoes anymore. Bought some in the sales last month. Black with gold flecks and everyone is jealous. Also got some Skechers Bobs with dogs on them

Gwenhwyfar · 16/01/2025 19:29

"Heatpad on the sofa and heated blanket in bed"

Then I suppose a hot water bottle counts.
