If you could only holiday in one country for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

I would choose Japan because I have Japanese ancestry and I like connecting with my roots. And from Hokkaido to Okinawa and in between, it’s so varied. If I wasn’t Japanese I’m not sure where I would choose 🤔 Interested in other people’s choices!

Italy did cross my mind as well. I was thinking about the amount of tourism but then there are loads of places off the beaten track that aren’t overrun with tourists, plus Japan has a major problem with over tourism anyways!

To be honest, probably the UK. There's so much of it that I haven't seen yet, despite living in it nearly all my life. I know the weather can be a bit shit, but there is just so much gorgeousness in the scenery, and then there's the towns and cities and museums and history...

and I speak as someone who absolutely adores Australia.

Chuchoter · 14/01/2025 14:19

Russia.

YourNimbleOchrePoster · 14/01/2025 14:20

I think it has to be Turkey for me, it doesn’t matter how many times I go I never get tired of the scenery or food and there’s so much to do there.

Radiatorvalves · 14/01/2025 14:21

France. I speak the language and the country has so much variety.

Ilovegoldies · 14/01/2025 14:23

Spain, I'll never tire of it. I think that is the only place I will actually holiday for the rest of my life. I love the food, the scenery, the language, the old villages. Its just perfect 👌

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 14/01/2025 14:23

France. Climate is good, topology varied and food to die for.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 14/01/2025 14:23

America

SparklyBrickViper · 14/01/2025 14:23

Italy.

I’m boring so a bit of sun, good food, museums and galleries is all I want and need.

Wendolino · 14/01/2025 14:23

Iceland. It's a beautiful country with lovely people and fabulous food.
Interesting history and geography. I can't wait to return.

stayathomer · 14/01/2025 14:24

From Ireland and I’d choose Ireland (Italy if I had to choose a different country!)

MontyNojangles · 14/01/2025 14:25

France. I just think it's a beautiful country of such variety and I speak the language. I'd pack up and live there tomorrow if I could.

mcdog · 14/01/2025 14:25

Greece. So many different islands, and I could live off Feta :)

HorrorFan81 · 14/01/2025 14:28

There are sooo many places i love, and lots more I want to visit but if I only had one I think it would be USA.
Love Disney/Universal. The gulf coast islands in florida. NOLA. Spent alot of time in North Carolina, gorgeous. New York is so much fun. Also desperate to visit New England, California and the North West

Sassybooklover · 14/01/2025 14:29

Greece and the Islands, without a shadow of a doubt! I love everything about the country - food, culture, people and history.

piscofrisco · 14/01/2025 14:30

Italy or France-both have it all really. Both Good winter and summer destinations. Culture. Food. Great Cities, Seaside, and beautiful countryside, history, and food. And neither are too hard or too expensive to get to.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 14/01/2025 14:31

Italy or France. Sun, sea and skiing!

YourNimbleOchrePoster · 14/01/2025 14:31

And neither are too hard or too expensive to get to.

That’s what put me off picking a long haul destination.

StormingNorman · 14/01/2025 14:36

France: skiing, beaches, medieval architecture, good food, good wine.

Cattery · 14/01/2025 14:36

Barbados. Apart from the bum-numbing flight it’s magical x

MrsAvocet · 14/01/2025 14:38

Tricky. On one hand I am tempted to say the USA because it's so huge that I could easily go several times a year for the likely rest of my life and never return to the same place twice. However, it's such a long journey and even if I could afford it I think I would get fed up of all that travel. Not easy for a short break. I'm also not wild about it politically though there are some amazing places of course.
So on reflection, I think I'd go for one of the bigger countries in Europe maybe either Spain or Germany. Lots of places to see and plenty of variety but easier to get to. I'd be gutted if I couldn't travel in the UK though so maybe I'd just opt for home!

Throughthebluebells · 14/01/2025 14:39

Italy, France or Switzerland. I could cope holidaying in any of those indefinitely. I'm less of a beach person, more quaint towns and villages, scenery, art and history, etc. Having pretty ski resorts for the winter would be a bonus.

mrsm43s · 14/01/2025 14:51

France.
Easy (and cheap!) to travel to
I speak the language
Varies from skiing to beach holidays to culture, so much variety.
Fabulous cheese and wine.

I think that's enough!

It probably the foreign country I've been to most in my life.

Fink · 14/01/2025 14:54

France, Italy as second choice. I love them both, but France has a special place in my heart (I used to live there). And of course, it's a great choice because if I ever do get bored with the Hexagon, there's all the overseas territories as well!
