If you could only holiday in one country for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

I would choose Japan because I have Japanese ancestry and I like connecting with my roots. And from Hokkaido to Okinawa and in between, it’s so varied. If I wasn’t Japanese I’m not sure where I would choose 🤔 Interested in other people’s choices!

Greece and the Islands, without a shadow of a doubt! I love everything about the country - food, culture, people and history.

Same! What's not to love 💖

Howlongisittomynextholiday · 14/01/2025 19:19

Ooh I've had this conversation with my husband recently.

Mainland Greece and the islands has my heart for sure. Gorgeous country, lovely people and fabulous food.

I'd be interested to learn more about Nicaragua though @Vatsallfolks it's somewhere I've never thought of visiting.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 14/01/2025 19:22

Not to be repetitive but Italy 😁

Ive spent alot of time in Puglia the last 2y and honestly cannot imagine getting sick of there never mind the rest of it to explore!

Am baffled by the rubbish beaches comment!

Lyn348 · 14/01/2025 19:25

Short haul Italy and Spain - although it breaks my heart not to be able to have Greece too.
Long haul Mexico or Thailand - so traveller friendly.

Meandhimtogether · 14/01/2025 19:31

The UK. Now we are retired we are going to places off the beaten track.
So many pretty places as long as the weather is good.

Does anyone remember the MNetter who apparently screamed when she saw the Sistine Chapel (or something like that). You are not quite in the same level, but it did remind me, nonetheless :)

Ahh, I cried (quietly mind!) when the boat from the airport rounded the headland and there was Venice in all her glory - I'd wanted to go there so badly and for so long 😍

CrushingOnRubies · 14/01/2025 19:44

France
Good food and drink
Decent weather
Speak the language
Relatively easy to get to

RawBloomers · 14/01/2025 19:49

Possibly China - huge and diverse - but worried about stability and the lack of local language (probably wouldn’t want to struggle over communication every holiday).

Most likely the US - Tropical Hawaiian beaches to frozen Alaskan shores. Surfing to skiing. City breaks to National Parks. New Orleans to Vegas. Disneyland, et al. Never get bored of holidays there.

rubiconartist · 14/01/2025 19:51

My instinct was the US because there's so much to do and see and different climates etc but I didn't want to commit to a long flight for every trip.

So sticking to Europe, I think I'd go Spain or Italy. Love the food, art etc plus gorgeous beaches. Plus I could get the train, ferry or drive as well as flying.

frozendaisy · 14/01/2025 20:09

USA
it's got a bit of everything

maggieemagpie · 14/01/2025 20:21

Turkey- you'd discover a new element of their culture and food every time!

Fink · 14/01/2025 20:27

I do get why people are choosing Greece, I'd be so sorry never to see it again (I'm really glad this isn't a genuine decision to make!), but I just don't feel that I could choose a country where I wasn't fluent in the language as my only destination. I've tried with Greek, but never got past basic phrases. I'd have to put my back into learning it properly.

MissAmbrosia · 14/01/2025 20:39

Another one for Italy. It has mountains, caribbean type beaches in places, beautiful countryside, fabulous towns and cities. In fact millennia of culture and history. And is totally different in the north vs the south. I will never manage everywhere I want to visit in my lifetime. However - I do not hold Italian food as the best - for food I prefer Spain, or even Germany! I am sure this is sacrilege.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 14/01/2025 20:41

France. So many differences across the regions, so much variation in local food and culture. I speak French too, which does help!

suburberphobe · 14/01/2025 20:54

Jamaica.

irregularegular · 14/01/2025 20:58

Italy or France.
Probably France, but based largely on ease of getting there by train or driving and not having to fly.
We're planning to spend a month in France this year, half holiday and half working - I'm very excited about it!

If I wasn't taking into account travel at all I might make a different choice, but I'm not sure...

CockSpadget · 14/01/2025 21:00

Another vote for France. Go there a lot anyway, it just has it all. Bloody love the place.

Magpiecomplex · 14/01/2025 21:13

UK for me. If I have to go abroad, then New Zealand, although it's a long way away which puts me off a bit.

Fink · 14/01/2025 21:22

I wonder if I could cheat by moving to France and then have another country (Italy or maybe Greece) as my holiday destination.

fiddleleaffig · 14/01/2025 22:24

America. It's so big with 100 different cultures and so much natural beauty to explore.

mumofoneDS · 14/01/2025 22:30

Thailand. My favourite country in the entire world

RestingLettice · 14/01/2025 23:03

Norway for me. Been numerous times and I just love it. Wish it was a bit cheaper to eat out there though.

Tooty78 · 14/01/2025 23:18

U.S.A. Visited many times and love it, as another poster said it has it all, mountains, forests, lakes, beaches.
I'm particularly fond of the Deep South, the history and architecture of Charleston and Savannah are wonderful, as are the people.

tobee · 14/01/2025 23:35

Ugh! So difficult! I'd say France because so varied but Greece has more reliable weather ime and I have family there - the only place outside England that I do - so it's nice to see them and know the best places to go. Plus the sea is so clear and beautiful!

101jobs · 15/01/2025 06:42

Italy 100%
