If you could only holiday in one country for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

I would choose Japan because I have Japanese ancestry and I like connecting with my roots. And from Hokkaido to Okinawa and in between, it’s so varied. If I wasn’t Japanese I’m not sure where I would choose 🤔 Interested in other people’s choices!

To be honest, probably the UK. There's so much of it that I haven't seen yet, despite living in it nearly all my life. I know the weather can be a bit shit, but there is just so much gorgeousness in the scenery, and then there's the towns and cities and museums and history...

and I speak as someone who absolutely adores Australia.

Are you me?!

I was about to say Austria which we love then looked at the question. Only one country- forever. So UK it is - all four nations

Ibiza.

At one time I would have said France but I think I am coming close to having exhausted my France fetish, I've spent so much time there so I'd have to pick somewhere else. I'm tempted to say the USA because it's so huge and diverse and I've barely scratched the surface so I could keep on going and every time would feel like a totally different holiday, with different cultural, food, climate and landscape experiences every time. But I don't know...there are too many things about American culture I am not that enamoured with and I think the food might get dull and samey after a while. And that aggressive tipping culture. I am a tipper but I prefer not to have a gun held to my head over it.

Probably Italy or Spain? Especially if I can include the islands. Easy to get to. Both beautiful with amazing food and lots of culture and history, good climates. I've been to both a handful of times but nowhere near enough to feel I've seen and done it all already. Thailand would be a contender too, but only if I could fly business class. I adore Singapore but after my third trip I'll have seen all there is to see several times over. Although as a place to live, wow, I'd jump at it.

It’s such a tough one. I love Northwest highlands in Scotland. Although maybe it would be Italy because I love the mountains and I love skiing and hiking and warmer beaches and still lots of history and pretty old places.

I’ve actually only been to Venice (and Sardinia but that seemed pretty boring just hot and boring) , maybe we’ll get our campervan out to visit mainland north Italy this year.. it’s just so far compared to France 😂. France is a convenience for us, but our most gobsmacking what did I just see holidays have not been in France… also French food mostly sucks unless in Paris, restaurants are usually much better value and much better tasting with much better variety in the UK than most of Europe now.

I also love Canada but it’s not got the history of other places and I’m sure the dolomites have comparables to the rockies.

Another one for Canada here
I live in BC now, have lived in most of the other provinces, or spent lots of time there, still not even close to seeing half the stuff I want to.
We have rainforests, crystal sand beaches, deserts, tundra, towering mountains, prairies, boreal forests, the longest coastline in the world, every kind of outdoor activity you could imagine
I have driven every inch of the Trans Canada highway, it never gets old, and every time I find more side roads and back tracks to explore.
There are many, many different ethnic regions, different languages spoken and so many cuisines to try.
That's not even looking at what the cities have to offer, like Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal etc

I absolutely fell in love with Canada last year. Stayed in Vancouver and Vancouver Island…will definitely be coming back .
Australia is my other draw because son is out in Melbourne and not sure when he will be back.
I do love Spain as well.

France.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 14/01/2025 18:27

France! Ticks so many boxes and you can have so many different holidays. Also, it's easily accessible from the UK.

Hungryheart2025 · 14/01/2025 18:28

Italy for me too - huge variety of places, amazing food, beautiful language, and you get Vatican City and San Remo thrown in for free!

sherbertcandy · 14/01/2025 18:30

UK, people don't realise what is here in their own country!

The UK. Having to go abroad every year would annoy me.

Thats interesting. I’m the absolute opposite. I don’t consider a week in the UK as a holiday. Probably because I didnt go abroad until I was an adult. Holidays to me, mean air travel, ‘exotic’ food and attempting (badly) to speak a foreign language. In fact my favourite thing on holiday is mooching around a local market (sad, I know 😀).
Thankfully, we are all different.

Inextremis · 14/01/2025 18:40

Ireland. I moved here from the UK 25 years ago and have absolutely no desire to go anywhere else (having previously traveled to various parts of Europe, the USA, and Africa). I even enjoy the weather!

cheezncrackers · 14/01/2025 18:42

I couldn't pick one, but if I could have:

France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, USA and Japan (the UK being a freebie obviously, as I live here 😁)

Then I think I could survive. Maybe ...

HawkersSouth · 14/01/2025 18:42

Mexico. Great cuisine, history, culture, weather.

StrikeForever · 14/01/2025 18:54

Africa (South Africa, Eswatini, Zimbabwe), I feel so at home and at ease there. The people a lovely, the flora and fauna to die for. That said, having done a lot of long haul travel over the years, husband and I are keeping closer to home for now. Our favourite short haul place so far is Crete. It’s very beautiful and the people are lovely, warm and friendly.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 14/01/2025 18:56

I'm torn between Greece, Italy, France and Spain but if I had a gun to my head, I'd go for Greece (if I could import Minuty rosé from France).

Greece has so much beauty and history and some of the kindest people on the planet.

I'd be sad not to visit Slovenia again though.

Badbadbunny · 14/01/2025 18:58

America. I could live a nomadic life and travel around for years, just moving from state to state, enjoying the nature and wildlife when I was in the mood, going the coast for Summers, a bit of skiing if I fancied it in the Winter, the hustle and bustle of the big cities for a week or two at a time. I'd never be bored. Ideally, get a big RV and just travel to wherever I felt like going.

SchoolDilemma17 · 14/01/2025 18:59

Always Italy
mountains, lakes, beaches, food, culture, vulcanoes, small islands, cities, nice people, snow: you can have everything in Italy.

Icantfindanewname · 14/01/2025 19:02

Egypt. Specifically, Luxor. I have been lucky enough to go round (and round) the world, and it will ALWAYS be Luxor. It feels like home (and I promptly burst into tears every time I go to the temple 😂)

DearDeadrie · 14/01/2025 19:02

Madeira, fell in love with it 6 years ago.

TonTonMacoute · 14/01/2025 19:02

Another vote for France.

Does anyone remember the MNetter who apparently screamed when she saw the Sistine Chapel (or something like that). You are not quite in the same level, but it did remind me, nonetheless :)

Saschka · 14/01/2025 19:06

Canada. I wouldn’t want to because of the distance, but if I was tied to one country I’d want somewhere where I could ski, do beach holidays (PEI and Nova Scotia are stunning), hike in glorious scenery, have city breaks.

The US would also fit the bill but I like Canada more. In Europe, probably Italy or Germany.

BrieHugger · 14/01/2025 19:08

Italy without a doubt, been several times and could never get bored of it!

localnotail · 14/01/2025 19:08

Italy!! Love it.
