If you could only holiday in one country for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

I would choose Japan because I have Japanese ancestry and I like connecting with my roots. And from Hokkaido to Okinawa and in between, it’s so varied. If I wasn’t Japanese I’m not sure where I would choose 🤔 Interested in other people’s choices!

Great thread OP. I have to say Germany, I’ve been completely obsessed since my first visit fourteen years ago.

What's wrong with the beaches in Italy? I've never been to a bad one. Do I have low standards or have I just got lucky?

I was probably a bit unfair, but my experience of Italian beaches is rows and rows of sun loungers and most of the beach owned by the restaurants and hotels that front them. The only bit of beach available to the general public is a strip about 30 metres across at one end. Oh and of course, no surf.

If you like that sort of thing, I'm sure it's very nice, but it isn't my thing.

Peggimmytchell · 14/01/2025 15:53

Spain. Short flight, good weather (usually), food, culture and cheap AI if I fancy being classless

Fink · 14/01/2025 15:53

I guess the upside of somewhere like the USA is that, even though it's hugely English-speaking, there are large enough communities of Spanish and various other languages that you could get some variety on holiday. It would be pretty depressing to only speak English for the rest of your life (if you live in an English-speaking home in the UK and could only travel to one other country).

Vatsallfolks · 14/01/2025 15:55

Nicaragua, volcanoes.. lakes, Caribbean coast , pacific coast , mountains, lovely food , fab people. and ridiculously cheap compared to Europe/US.

StopTalkingSoMuch · 14/01/2025 15:55

Croatia. Clean, beautiful, safe.

TheFairyCaravan · 14/01/2025 16:02

Menorca. I know it’s not a country, however I don’t want to go to the rest of Spain, I’d just want to go there.

We went to Kos last year and DH moaned it wasn’t as nice as Menorca the whole time. We were looking at holidays at the weekend, we both looked at each other and said “let’s just go to Menorca”. I’d move there in a heartbeat

Juliagreeneyes · 14/01/2025 16:06

France, not a doubt! I speak reasonable French, and it’s such a varied country that you can have so many different kinds of holidays.

Jins · 14/01/2025 16:07

Another one for Barbados

France, Italy as second choice. I love them both, but France has a special place in my heart (I used to live there). And of course, it's a great choice because if I ever do get bored with the Hexagon, there's all the overseas territories as well!

Good point! I think it would have to be France, then.

But I would be a bit sad if I could never go to Italy or Iceland again.

Wildflowerswildhorses · 14/01/2025 16:11

Canada. Live in BC so mainly the prairie provinces, maritime and Newfoundland.

Croatia. Clean, beautiful, safe.

Aren’t there still undiscovered landmines? That has put me off going.

Chillilounger · 14/01/2025 16:12

The UK. Having to go abroad every year would annoy me.

lavenderlou · 14/01/2025 16:14

Another one for France. Pretty much only go there anyway. Easy to get to and so much variety of landscape, history, culture as well as the delicious food and wine. It's also really easy to get holiday accommodation.

Mingenious · 14/01/2025 16:16

Thailand, no question.

The food is amazing, the people are lovely and it’s absolutely beautiful!

YourNimbleOchrePoster · 14/01/2025 16:17

I’m get palpitations just thinking of only ever going on holiday in one other country for the rest of my life. I’ve been to 61 countries so far and what to get to 100 before I die.

ShodAndShadySenators · 14/01/2025 16:19

Greece for me, but it's so very difficult to pick just one country. There's so many wonderful places, it would be awful to be tied and not be able to explore new ones

DaftyLass · 14/01/2025 16:20

Another one for Canada here
I live in BC now, have lived in most of the other provinces, or spent lots of time there, still not even close to seeing half the stuff I want to.
We have rainforests, crystal sand beaches, deserts, tundra, towering mountains, prairies, boreal forests, the longest coastline in the world, every kind of outdoor activity you could imagine
I have driven every inch of the Trans Canada highway, it never gets old, and every time I find more side roads and back tracks to explore.
There are many, many different ethnic regions, different languages spoken and so many cuisines to try.
That's not even looking at what the cities have to offer, like Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal etc

Ihopeyouhavent · 14/01/2025 16:21

America. Florida and Disney. California and Disney and road trips down the coast to the beach. Yosemite and Death Valley. Big cities like NY.

Couldnt live there, but holiday yes.

Portugal would be second.

ginasevern · 14/01/2025 16:21

Italy every single time. The whole country is basically a floating museum and art gallery so if, like me, you adore art and history you'll never, ever get bored. Then there's the countryside, from the rolling hills of Tuscany to the Dolomites and the sweeping planes of Puglia. Add to that the food, wine and coffee - what more can I say!

Cynic17 · 14/01/2025 16:22

Italy..

Lookingforwardto2025 · 14/01/2025 16:23

Another vote for Italy. Absolutely beautiful and very varied and the best cuisine.

I think it has to be Turkey for me, it doesn’t matter how many times I go I never get tired of the scenery or food and there’s so much to do there.

I agree. I need to plan another trip there soon. I love Turkey

stanleypops66 · 14/01/2025 16:24

Spain. Such variation between canaries, Balearics, wonderful cities like Madrid and Barcelona, mountains and skiing.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 14/01/2025 16:27

Scotland.
