Herpes Medication found in my husbands bag

countrysidefields · 13/01/2025 16:10

I have just found empty packets of tablets from an online pharmacy box dated 17th dec 2024 for anciclovir in my husbands laptop bag.
All the empty packets and packing was also in the box, like it was hidden in there.
When I googled that medication it's used for genital herpes. He doesn't and never has had cold sores.
I am obviously thinking the worst seeing how it was hidden away. Please don't judge me, I wasn't actually looking on purposes, I happened to come across it.
Am I right to be assuming the worst?

Not without open sores you can't. OP doesn't have open sores to check.

(The blood tests are notoriously unreliable.)

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, scars and acyclovir thanks.

You absolutely can test without having an active current outbreak. Most doctors won’t test unless they are pushed to, but that doesn’t mean they can’t.

Source: I also got the t-shirt and medical background.

@carpevitam Honestly, I seen it as he was clearly too embarrassed to say. It's not a big deal he always takes his medication and I have never had it, touch wood. I kind of just chose to understand rather than judge.

Acyclovir can also be used to treat Shingles!

I find it very odd, medication or no medication, that you wouldn’t have spotted a cold sore on him in 15 years.

If he's taking antivirals and they are working well he may not have had an outbreak in 15 years. That's the point of the antivirals.

What is the point though? If you aren't having outbreaks you don't need treatment. The blood test won't tell you where you have it or if you caught it six months ago or six years ago. Seems like a poor use of NHS budgets.

Knowledge is power. If she wants to be tested, and has a doctor willing to do so, why should it matter? Who gets to decide what is and isn’t a good use of NHS funds? Seems like a slippery slope.

You are correct that the test cannot tell you if you were exposed 6 weeks or 6 years ago. But if you test positive and have never had an outbreak, you are still armed with relevant data in case you become pregnant, for instance. In the States, HSV is not on the standard STI/STD panel. You have to specifically request it.

Nope. You don’t need open sores to take the blood test.

Sounds your husbands been being a hoe, but you probably already know that anyway

What a shitty thing to say to someone you know absolutely nothing about.

TheCheeseIsCallingMe · 20/01/2025 18:43

It's not hugely accurate though. I tested negative for ages but still had it . Maybe if you can find someone who does the western blot test. You still need to wait a few months to test as you have to develop antibodies.

If you have a break out, best test is to get the sores swabbed and they can tell you what it is

Decisions are taken every day about how NHS budgets are prioritised.

It isn't on the standard tests in the UK either.

I was replying to a post that specified 15 years and that's how long he's been on med isn't it.

Make sure they test you for IgG AND IgM antibodies and explain to you which is which (I can’t remember but one is for past exposure and one is for more recent exposure). It’s possible you have been exposed but your body is just very very good at keeping it at bay. For instance I have tested positive for the oral type of HSV (herpes) but have never had a cold sore.

HSV1 can be genital or oral. Or in deed on your finger, leg, arm or just about anywhere.

StraightUpGuy · 24/01/2025 09:26

Herpes can be something easily caught from a previous partner and can be dormant for ages before it shows. Also herpes on the face, is actually what a cold-sore is.
