Heavy rain and strong winds where we are (Dorset). If that had turned to snow it would have been a lot.

Siouxtse1 · 05/01/2025 10:01

North Cumbria, but not rural. Not so much as a flake by 1am, but about 2" by 8am. Sleet/ snow forecast off and on for the next 2 days. Temperatures not predicted to get above 2 degrees (and below freezing in the evenings).

They only grit the main roads, so the road we live on will be like an ice rink tomorrow morning. It's been -4 or -5 and icy, but not really slippy for a few days beforehand.

Kids are super excited- have been outside building a snowman and throwing snowballs. Haven't told them that where we used to live (5 hours away) has had about 6" of snow already!

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 05/01/2025 10:02

About 5 inches in my part of East lancs and it's still lightly snowing

@Sheknowsaboutme Airports have guidelines as to when & why runways closed. It costs hundreds of thousands of pounds, if not millions, in fees to airlines (& passengers) in order to delay flights. It's not a decision taken lightly. It is only done if there is evidence of ice or above a certain level of snow. You need to educate yourself!

Just for info/context/the big picture this is a C&P of part of the Eurocontrol Tactical update for operators (public version) published at 0930.

“General Information
Widespread snow and ice conditions is affecting operations at many Aerodromes in North/Central Europe.
Slot Improvements for flights, including critical flights are unlikely”

It’s not just a “Brit’s can’t cope” problem, certainly not when it comes to airports.

TBF in the last couple of decades or so some Uk airports have actually improved their ability to carry on operating to some degree in ice and snow -for a time prior to that it almost seemed as some airports shut down at the first sign of a snowflake on the basis of “you can’t be too careful”.

Leeds/Bradford was always forecast to be probably one of the worse effected airfields in the UK (location etc) and was closed, certainly for arrivals, in the early hours of this AM (if not late last night).

According to a poster on another thread that’s been running recently ref travel plans at least some airlines operating out of there were notifying passengers yesterday to expect no departures before noon today at the earliest.

Carpark at Aldi this morning

So where’s all this snow we were warned about
Ruslandgirl · 05/01/2025 11:18

My DS is a chef and working near Ramsbottom today. He got to work but just now said the table cancellations and coming in thick and fast.

So where’s all this snow we were warned about
VegTrug · 05/01/2025 11:40

@notimagain LBA is the highest airport in the UK. It was built by the RAF to train Hurricane pilots to land in inclement weather. Then some bright spark thought "Hmm let's turn it into an international airport....!"

VegTrug · 05/01/2025 11:41

@notimagain You've tagged the wrong poster I think? I was making the same point as you!

Most primary age school children live within a mile?

Perhaps they might do in towns & cities, but they don't round here. Our schools have a large fairly rural catchment, and the majority of children come in by bus or car.

SabreIsMyFave · 05/01/2025 11:52

Had about 3" overnight, but at around 6am it started raining. Rained for 2 hours, washed about two thirds of it away, and then ir stopped raining. Still looks pretty though as around an inch is still left all over the trees and houses etc... COLD af though ... Windchill minus 5 C! Shock Still THAT cold, even at midday!

EmmaMaria · 05/01/2025 12:00

Such a typical Londoner OP. No snow in sight where I live so how come we were warned about the snow? Ignore the fact that they have the timings for warning wrong, weather isn't that predictable that snow falls exactly when you said two days ago, and the fact that London is a VERY SMALL part of the UK. But if so much as a flake falls in London, and there's a national crisis - despite the fact that most of the rest of the country has been under several feet of snow for a week and not mentioned.

JadeSeahorse · 05/01/2025 12:01

Just outside Peak District NP here.

About 3 - 4" during the night but nothing since.
No rain as yet though so the flaming snow is just sat there.😡

Hate it as you can tell 😁

I know. I used to live near there. It often gets fog bound as well.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/01/2025 12:05

A light dusting in Nottingham. All gone now.

Northernbrightlights · 05/01/2025 12:10

4-5 inches here in Yorkshire Dales and forecast to snow until tomorrow pm. Farmers are doing a wonderful job of keeping the roads clear.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 05/01/2025 12:12

@Thomasina79 we were meant to have up to 20cms this morning!! havent seen a single snowflake yet!

I promised the dog it would be snow today. Well, as in "we can't go for a walk tomorrow because of snow."
Instead it's raining so no getting out of it.
No snow in Lincoln either.
