East mids here too, I don't think we will get any thankfully just sleet. Don't me wrong I love snow but it's too close to the kids going back to school I don't need them off any longer 😂

Fingers crossed!

We're home counties north of London, and I think we are forecast 3-6cm overnight. But we are also forecast rain and 12 degrees by Sunday lunchtime, so any snow isn't going to last long.

Parker231 · 04/01/2025 17:35

We live in a country where it snows in winter - it’s currently snowing most days now and is -10. If it snows heavily on a school or work day, you just get up earlier to get there. Most people walk to school . It is incredibly rare to have a snow day and keep everyone at home.

With the very limited snow the UK gets, the schools shouldn’t be closed particularly as there is plenty of notice of when it’s likely to snow.

slightlydistrac · 04/01/2025 17:39

@Parker231 I do agree with you, but your country is geared up for it, whereas for the most part we're not. The vast majority of people don't live within walking distance of school - most of the teachers certainly don't.

Most primary age school children live within a mile?

Georgyporky · 04/01/2025 17:41

We have 3 weather apps.
This a.m. , one said snow was stopping in 2 mins, another said 3 mins.
It hasn't snowed for a month.
The BBC w.a. was correct about the lack of snow etc, but this was the app that failed to spot the heavy snow last month.

I don't trust any of them.

With the limited snow the UK has we don't have the resources to clear all the rural roads when we do get a big dump of it and even main roads get quite dangerous while it's falling.

Uricon2 · 04/01/2025 17:43

I'm in East Anglia near the coast and although the national forecasts show us in the yellow zone for snow, the local ones seem to be for drizzle. We do seem to usually get it from the East, mainly.

I suppose I might be eating my words tomorrow!

But their teachers don't.

garlictwist · 04/01/2025 17:44

There's snow where I am (North Yorkshire) which fell earlier in the week and hasn't melted but I think this weekends is meant to come overnight and tomorrow rather than now.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 04/01/2025 17:49

I think it will be
Horrible rain, and ice will be the issue

I'm in London and it's not forecast to start until about 7.30 or 8pm.

Yep, Heathrow forecast has chances of snow showers starting around now (1800 UK ) with chance of some heavy dumps of snow from about 2000 onwards…that said the sky there is fairly clear ATM..

Zippedydodah · 04/01/2025 18:04

Snowing here just NE of Bath! It’s just a light covering at the moment.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 04/01/2025 18:13

Be careful what you say. When we had the Beast from the East social media was full of people in Wicklow saying that Met Eireann were mistaken because there was only a sprinkling of snow. A few hours later most of Wicklow was cut off for about a week.

The roads are the problem. No matter how much warning we are given some roads are not gritted making them unsafe. We live 3 miles away from our youngest dds school and 4 from our eldest dds school and most roads we use to get there are dangerous so even if school opens we don't go because it isn't safe. I'm glad we don't get it often!

WellsAndThistles · 04/01/2025 18:21

Outside my house, light dusting, no drama( not London )

The thing is that every country copes with what is usual, because it's worth while devoting resources to deal with things that happen a lot and have the potential to disrupt the economy and daily life. For things that only happen occasionally it's not worth the cost, it's cheaper to have parts of the country just close down for a day or two. There is no point in feeling superior because your country copes with snow, there are bound to be things that go wrong occasionally that your country doesn't plan for (eg flooding, heat wave, tsunami, invasion by Russia, earthquake, volcano) that other countries do plan for because it happens to them regularly.

SeatonCarew · 04/01/2025 18:40

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar is correct. We don't get snow often enough to justify a higher level of both capital and revenue expenditure to be ready to deal with every eventuality.

On top of this, the UK climate is extremely changeable due to the Gulf Stream, with often large variations in temperature from one day to the next. We don't tend to get cold fronts that set in for weeks, as they do in mainland Europe for example.

Edited to add, there's a reason we're known for talking about the weather! It changes all the time. 😊

i don’t know where you live but my son was in Vancouver last winter and the city ground to a halt when they had heavy snow. This was surprising.

We live near the other side of the Pennines and the forecast is saying around 7-8pm onwards, either it turning to freezing rain later in the early hours.

I'm glad the forecast has moved back a bit t as currently about to go over Snake Pass and I'd rather it wasn't snowing as we did so!

Just left lots of beautiful crisp looking snow in Switzerland but would rather not be facing it here - we aren't set up for it and everything just grinds to a halt.

The Snake Pass in bad weather?! You're brave 💪

shellyleppard · 04/01/2025 17:09

@JBJ can you stay at a hotel near the airport?? So you don't have so far to go in the bad weather?

@JBJ this would be my suggestion too - I'm about 5 miles from EMA and though there's nothing yet, you don't want to risk missing a flight x

JBJ · 04/01/2025 18:55

@Icanflyhigh I'm not far away from EMA either, so should be ok getting there. My cousin, who's coming with me, is working this evening, so we can go a bit early once she's finished.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/01/2025 18:57

Didn’t know it was due in London?

BBC have been saying central and northern England, Wales and Scotland with a warm front over the south for at least 2 days🤷‍♀️
