I’m trying not to give any spoilers but I did really enjoy Christmas episode. I’ve just watched it now however I want to know has anybody ever been to a wedding where people have stood up and said that person can’t marry that person because is that just something that happens in films or does it ever happen in real life?

I've never watched this programme in my life but that sounds like a spoiler to me. You could have asked the question with no mention of the programme.

Yes, I'm sure in the long history of marriages, some people have objected at some point.

SpicyMarge · 27/12/2024 23:12

That is a pretty major spoiler, to be fair.

WinterCrow · 27/12/2024 23:12

Of course it's a spoiler.

But the programme has been transmitted, and on news media, so it's not much of a secret.

As for the question in your thread title, it's not compulsory; but I daresay it has happened very occasionally.

I’m not just talking one individual person though I’m talking quite a few people to stand up

Thread title is a terrible spoiler

Should be Can I ask? Gavin And Stacey Spoiler

And it's definitely a spoiler to me as I haven't watched yet.

Highfivemum · 27/12/2024 23:15

Yesit does but very rarely. It happened 17yrs ago with a friend of mine. Not like in having and Stacey though. My friend got to the alter and then called it off. Very embarrassing for everyone

Pumpkincozynights · 27/12/2024 23:15

No, none that I know of.
It does irritate me in films/TV shows.
It’s always ‘Oh I object because he/she should marry me /doesn’t love the bride/groom.’
The other party then asks ‘Is this true?’
To be told by their intended ‘YES ITS TRUE.’
Then it always ends with the bride/groom marrying the other person who they should have married in the first place.

Marblesbackagain · 27/12/2024 23:15

Seriously op plenty may have saved this to watch. Remove the spoiler.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 27/12/2024 23:15

It’s a massive spoilers.

In a wedding when they ask if anyone knows why they should marry you can’t object on grounds of them not loving each other or he shagged the bridesmaid last night. It has to be a legal reason like already married or using a fake identity.

I just came to say the same

Fuck sake.

UncertainWife · 27/12/2024 23:16

To have such a huge spoiler in the thread title is mean.

Thankfully I just watched it now, I'd have been so pissed off to see your spoiler thread title if I hadn't.

Can you tag or message mumsnet and ask them to change it for you?

olderbutwiser · 27/12/2024 23:19

I wish someone had at my first wedding.

The thing is, it’s all over the news media anyway because I’ve just googled and the mirror article came up so how do you avoid it when it’s all over the Internet?

OP posts:
NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/12/2024 23:22

Even I knew there was a wedding in it and I've never watched a single episode.

Of course somebody's going to interrupt and object - it's one of the commonest tropes there is.

I actively choose not to read anything related to G&S. I didn't get a choice here.

AnneLovesGilbert · 27/12/2024 23:25

I wish I’d done it at a friend’s wedding. At least half the congregation were practically gnawing on their wrists to stop objecting. We were right, it ended in disaster a couple of years later with the first major cracks appearing within months of the wedding.

Report yourself

WinterCrow · 27/12/2024 23:38

OP, I've reported it for you. But as you started the thread at 22.56, it may take a while, should MNHQ decide to edit the thread title.

sausageupanalley · 27/12/2024 23:48

I think it's unfair people are moaning about spoilers it was on 2 days ago and was all over the news, plus it's a comedy not a mega serious drama, how long can what happened in the show not be mentioned for if someone was that bothered they could have watched it in the last couple of days

It's Christmas some of us haven't had time to watch a programme! Honestly I expect a spoiler alert in title so we can avoid . It isn't rocket science!

You sort of did. First few words you would have known. Don’t worry, it’s pretty obvious from the start what will happen.

You have plenty of time to moan on this thread though 😉
