Do you do housework on Christmas Day?

Prepared to accept that I’m a weirdo, but I’ll definitely do a washing (and hang it up to dry) and hoover. Once the day is done and the kid’s in bed, I’ll maybe do the ironing if there’s any sitting.

Am I a lunatic for doing housework that day? Do you do any?

No, I will tidy as I go with dishes etc, pick up any dog mess in the garden. But ironing, absolutely not!

OfDragonsDeep · 20/12/2024 21:49

I wouldn’t clean the bathroom type job, but I’ll wash up, sort out a wash, run the hoover round

RandomMusing · 20/12/2024 21:50

I try not to, but I will bake a cake this year. Probably a load of washing too.

SherlocksDeerstalker · 20/12/2024 21:50

I do what needs doing if I’m sitting there. Eg I will tidy all the wrapping and recycling. Can’t cope with shit just lying about the floor. I shall not however be hoovering or touching an appliance other than the dishwasher. That can wait till Boxing Day! I say do what makes you happy. As long as you don’t feel like you HAVE to be doing it, then why not.

ElinAlma · 20/12/2024 21:51

I'll load the dishwasher but that's about it.

mynameiscalypso · 20/12/2024 21:51

I wouldn't do routine jobs but we always tidy up that night, run a load of washing, take the bins out and clean the kitchen. I like to get up in the morning to a clean house.

Iloveacurry · 20/12/2024 21:51

I usually do some washing!

OctoblocksAssemble · 20/12/2024 21:52

Washing up, yes
laundry, no
Hoovering, no
Ironing, never do this and certainly won't start on Christmas

mammaCh · 20/12/2024 21:53

Dishwasher and absolute basic cleaning if needed here.

EmeraldDreams73 · 20/12/2024 21:53

It's a hell no from here, other than what's needed to make and clear up the dinner.

My mum didn't have a washing machine when I was growing up - she never did any washing (and therefore any ironing) on Christmas Day. It's still the only day of the year she doesn't do any, although of course she has a washing machine now. I'm not at all as OCD houseproud as she is but there's zero chance of me doing any laundry or cleaning on Christmas Day!

CaliforniaEarthquake · 20/12/2024 21:54

Goodness me - no!

AnyoneSomeone · 20/12/2024 21:54

Stack the dishwasher, tidy the kitchen. Well DH will do that. But I don't do laundry or hoover every day, so I doubt that will happen on Xmas day.

AllYearsAround · 20/12/2024 21:54

Tidy up, put the dishwasher on and possibly hoover.
Won't do laundry or clean the bathroom.

Bignanna · 20/12/2024 21:56

No need to do washing or ironing on Christmas Day! Cleaning is pointless, just tidy up wrapping paper and empty the bins etc. in the midst of cooking, eating, entertaining etc how on earth would anyone have the time, motivation or energy to do routine household chores too?

Diversion · 20/12/2024 21:56

Clean the toilet and bathroom basin and hoover through the downstairs rooms before family arrive and usually again once they have left. Dishwasher will be on, the washing up by hand done and the surfaces wiped. The house needs to be reasonably clean and tidy after the chaos before I can relax and ready for the chaos again the next day.

Headingtowardsdivorce · 20/12/2024 21:56

I'll stack the dishwasher but nothing else.

mamaduckbone · 20/12/2024 21:57

No way!
Obviously we'll clear up wrapping paper etc and wash / clear up after meals but otherwise nothing. That's the whole point of it all...rest, relaxation and fun.

BarbaraHoward · 20/12/2024 21:57

Just whatever needs to be done to keep the place ticking over. Plenty of tidying (wrapping paper, toys etc), and obviously dinner will involve lots of cooking and washing. Might run the cordless hoover around if the kids make as many crumbs as usual or shred the wrapping paper.

Won't bother with laundry, there'll be enough of that in the run up and after.

Eyesopenwideawake · 20/12/2024 21:59

Gobsmacked - do people really do washing and hoovering on Christmas Day?

Why?

DappledThings · 20/12/2024 21:59

DS wets the bed most nights so will almost certainly have to do a wash and will probably stick whatever else is in the basket on with it. I wouldn't plan to but I don't think it's odd to do if it needs doing.

Hskatkat · 20/12/2024 21:59

Yes ,
Wash dogs (not housework), their bedding , towels clean that bathroom.
(Clean washing machine after)
Clean upstairs bathrooms & run vacuum around.
Clean kitchen floor , living room and vacuum downstairs
Probably do one wash if needed
Obviously washing up as needed during the day

TeenLifeMum · 20/12/2024 22:00

No, why would you?

Mill3nniel · 20/12/2024 22:00

Yeah I'd clean up and wash up but probably not laundy

i don't think it's that weird

AppleKatie · 20/12/2024 22:01

Why would you need to clean an upstairs bathroom? Perhaps you could get busy having fun?

ShortyShorts · 20/12/2024 22:02

I do the washing up and clean down the kitchen because DH does the Christmas dinner.

Other than that, no.
