Do you do housework on Christmas Day?

Prepared to accept that I’m a weirdo, but I’ll definitely do a washing (and hang it up to dry) and hoover. Once the day is done and the kid’s in bed, I’ll maybe do the ironing if there’s any sitting.

Am I a lunatic for doing housework that day? Do you do any?

But saying it's weird is really judgmental- maybe some people don't have a day like yours?

Not everyone has a family they can spend time with or friends who are free.

Some of us even go to work too so it's not our day off.

The OP has a household of five so it’s not as if she’s unhappily alone on Christmas Day and desperately trying to find things to do!

No, OP. It wouldn’t even occur to me.

devilspawn · 21/12/2024 11:17

I never do housework, prefer to pay someone to do it.

Arraminta · 21/12/2024 11:37

I wonder if people carry on cleaning/ironing/laundry on Xmas Day because they genuinely don't know how else to fill up their time?

Jellycatspyjamas · 21/12/2024 11:42

@Arraminta or really can’t relax unless everything is immaculate. I have no such affliction 😂

We have a houseful of guests, all adult relatives who stay for at least two nights. We have slightly more guests than we really have space for. What I learned to do a few years ago was that, when the DC go for a nap, every adult spends 5 mins or so doing a very quick task whether that is hoovering the living room, scooping up all of the hand towels, bath mats etc and chucking them in the washing machine, emptying the bins or grabbing a packet of Dettol wipes and wiping around the downstairs cloakroom or main bathroom (for that matter, I have also learned to keep a pack of Dettol wipes and some rubber gloves in every bathroom). Them going up for a bath was another opportunity for a quick reset.
The DC are now teens

I would be distinctly unimpressed if my host handed me a pair of Marigolds and a packet of Dettol and instructed me to give the en suite a scrub!

On. Christmas. Day. WTAF?

We've had a cleaner for years, but even before that I always kept a clean, fresh, tidy house. But it would have been unthinkable to ask a guest to help out with any loo cleaning.

I still have distressing memories of my Mum imposing her fanatical need for cleanliness and tidiness on anyone in her vicinity. It spoilt so, so many family occasions.

burnoutbabe · 21/12/2024 11:53

I can see you at do some washing if you have guests and maybe extra bedding being swapped around as people arrive or leave?

RosesAndHellebores · 21/12/2024 11:53

@Araminta as a regular host, I am distinctly unimpressed if guests don't leave a bog as they expect others to find it. In those circumstances I might suggest a little help.

Similarly when I am a guest, I do enough to ensure my host doesn't need to hand me the Marigolds.

magicalmrmistoffelees · 21/12/2024 10:58

I guess this issue is avoided for me by the fact that I don’t hoover or clean my bathrooms every day anyway. So not doing it on Christmas Day wont make my house any dirtier than every other day of the year.

Each to their own, I do these things every day and have done since I left home so it is pretty much automatic for me now.
I have guests on Christmas day and can't imagine not giving the loo a quick clean before everyone arrives.

Sinkintotheswamp · 21/12/2024 12:33

I have two laundry baskets and both are currently full up as it won't stop drizzling. Damn right I'll be doing laundry on Xmas day if the sun is out.

I don't have guests or drink, and my teens will be on screens so I can mostly please myself all day. Have a run, eat choc, eat Xmas dinner and potter about.

DoubleRainbow3 · 21/12/2024 12:36

I wouldn't have time to do much. But some of us have to do a bit depending on our family size.
The laundry in my house if missing one day is bad enough. I would put one on Xmas night if towels and easy enough to put in the dryer. Boxing day morning I def do one.
Thankfully have a robot hoover and if I didn't I would def need to hoover too.
Beds will be made as can't tolerate unmade beds. Our cars will be filled with bin bags with wrapping paper and boxes from new gifts ready for the skip.
I feel I can relax and enjoy my drink if all this is done and getting up on boxing morning is bit easier cuz of this.
I love boxing day dinner, we do another xmas dinner and so easy to do with all meats already cooked from the dy before.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 21/12/2024 15:37

We do the routine stuff that gets done everyday:

Bleach loos
Wipe showers/basins after use
Dishwasher/washing up as we go
Wipe kitchen surfaces after cooking
Take care of wrapping paper/take out rubbish/recycling
Might mop kitchen floor (daily task because of the dog
No vacuuming/dusting/ironing unless there are lots of crumbs or the dog makes mess

DilemmaDelilah · 21/12/2024 17:17

Tidying up, washing up and cleaning up in the kitchen, just surface stuff. Putting leftovers in containers in the fridge or freezer as appropriate. That's all.

DoYouAlwaysHaveToSayThat · 21/12/2024 17:18

I'll do any washing, if needed.

Busywithsomething · 21/12/2024 19:18

Washing up, yes. Minimal tidying- mainly of gift wrap. Otherwise, no. I give myself a day off.

TheTecknician · 26/12/2024 17:39

I did some washing up yesterday and I think some vacuuming too - that might have been Christmas Eve. I did laundry today, as did my neighbour.

ProvincialLady24 · 20/12/2024 23:41

Coking and washing up.

Would love to be a guest and be liked after.

Two brilliant typos.

Coking - I'm sure some of us would get through the holidays better with some Colombian speed sweeties.

To be liked after - guests are usually liked the most once they've left Grin

LuckysDadsHat · 27/12/2024 10:08

Well I ended up doing 2 loads of washing, hoovered twice and the dishwasher was on 4 times, but my house stayed remarkably tidy so I'm happy with what I did. It's not like we have to take it to the river to wash it! Just bung it in to wash and then throw it in the dryer.

Mymanyellow · 27/12/2024 19:30

I did a load Boxing Day then another today. Back to work today so just a quick tidy and run the hoover round downstairs.

WhatIDoIsEnough · 27/12/2024 19:33

I hoovered as was unbearable.
Obviously washed up
I did do a wash and tumble dry in the evening

Mushybut · 06/07/2025 19:42

DappledThings · 20/12/2024 21:59

DS wets the bed most nights so will almost certainly have to do a wash and will probably stick whatever else is in the basket on with it. I wouldn't plan to but I don't think it's odd to do if it needs doing.

Pull ups! @DappledThings

cyvguhb · 06/07/2025 19:51

Am I the only one whose mind is boggled by anyone firstly finding a Christmas thread in July and then thinking they'd have something useful to post on it?

What on earths going on @Mushybut 😂

It came up in the little menu of threads to click on at bottom of my screen! Didn’t realise it was a zombie 🤭

Although your second query is a little ironic 😆

Anyone who 'does ironing' must actually enjoy it or is being a wifey martyr because ironing is not a job that even needs doing. How old are your kids? Because if they are older than 13 then why would you be doing their washing for them?

I always iron. I’m by no means a ‘wifey martyr’ I wouldn’t go out in unironed clothes…personal preference.

The trick is to buy clothes that don't need ironing.
