Do you do housework on Christmas Day?

Prepared to accept that I’m a weirdo, but I’ll definitely do a washing (and hang it up to dry) and hoover. Once the day is done and the kid’s in bed, I’ll maybe do the ironing if there’s any sitting.

Am I a lunatic for doing housework that day? Do you do any?

our meal is christmas eve and it is not traditional, bbq. Our close family friends will be here and they will do the washing up .. my husband will clean the bbq. We will pick up and dispose of all wrapping paper before they leave. Christmas day my husband and I will continue our family tradition of fresh made iced cinnamon buns for breakfast, that I will prep night before ,, and since our kids and grandkids live in a different country..there will be leftovers so oh oh..lol. Then the rest of the day is ... shower, fresh pj's, chill on the sofa binge watching tv.. any leftovers will be lunch and dinner will be a pizza ordered in. bliss. Might have a swim..but doubt it.. just want to chill Housework Fuck that.

No absolutely nothing except setting table andwashing dishes

Mashroom · 20/12/2024 22:16

Bed stripped today. House is clean. I love cleaning but no way would I do it on Christmas Day (of course change bins, dishawadter, swirl cleaner down the toilet but that’s it)

Waffle19 · 20/12/2024 22:16

the hoover will be run round and dishes will be done but I am giving myself a laundry holiday including Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. We have a cleaner every other week for three hours and the timing has fell that’s she’s coming on Christmas Eve which I’m delighted about (I had offered for her not to do it but she has insisted).

fivebyfivebuffy · 20/12/2024 22:18

Yes but I don't really celebrate it
So I'll do an exercise class, cleaning, watch a film, whatever I fancy

HobnobsChoice · 20/12/2024 22:18

The only laundry I'll do is the table cloth as it inevitably gets heavy and wine on it and it's an antique one so I like to make sure it is cleaned straight away.
Apart from that wrapping paper in recycling and dishwasher will be on overtime. That's all

DidyouNO · 20/12/2024 22:18

I last ironed in 1997 so I'm not likely to on Christmas Day 😂

LoudPlumDog · 20/12/2024 22:20

Just clean up mess as we go. Always the kitchen ( multiple times) toilet, sinks, rubbish and recycling out, and send robot around and mop at the end of the day!

Jellycatspyjamas · 20/12/2024 22:20

Nope I’m about to embark on a whole deep clean of the house tomorrow and will clean as I go after that. Christmas Day I’ll clean the kitchen and make beds but that’s it. Boxing Day I’ll do the same but no proper cleaning and definitely no laundry.

SecretSoul · 20/12/2024 22:21

Do people really need to do laundry every single day? It's hard to imagine laundry piling up by taking one single day off the housework.

Agree with clearing up wrapping paper, taking cups/glasses out to the kitchen and sticking the dishwasher on.

But laundry and ironing? I mean, it's up to you, and if that's what makes you happy then fine.

But really, it sort of suggests that you can never switch off and just enjoy the company of your family and friends. I'd not be happy with my partner if they were insisting on doing ironing on Christmas Day evening. My DC would also feel as if I wasn't spending proper time with them.

And I say this as someone with ADHD who is TERRIBLE at switching off and relaxing - if even I'm thinking it's a bit OTT, that's saying something 😂

Quite aside from anything else, aren't you absolutely knackered from a day of cooking a huge meal and then stuffing your face?!

Yes, bonkers. HTH.

anonny55 · 20/12/2024 22:27

We will load dishwasher and give a quick tidy in the kitchen after dinners cooked, all the wrapping paper out in the recycling and presents all tidied away. That's it there. The rest will wait

Upstartled · 20/12/2024 22:28

I'll put a wash on overnight on Christmas eve and pop it in the dryer on the morning.. it's not very arduous and it keeps the wheels turning. Obviously the kitchen and dining room needs putting back together again but everyone will chip in with that.

Purplecatshopaholic · 20/12/2024 22:32

Dear god no! WTAF, who hoovers on Christmas Day? Bonkers.

Sinkintotheswamp · 20/12/2024 22:34

Yes, it's a slow day so I have a little catch up.
Definitely laundry if the sun is out or it's dry.

natwalesrug · 20/12/2024 22:35

Bin bag ready for unwrapping, husband in charge of everything else ie washing up after breakfast ,tidy kitchen! I am so looking forward this year not hosting . Going to sisters house for lunch ,planning on having a few drinkies and taxi booked for 8pm !

Bellavida99 · 20/12/2024 22:37

Dishwasher and wiping table and worktops would be about it

What is a deep clean? Genuine question.

ObieJoyful · 20/12/2024 22:38

I don’t iron full stop, so I’m not going to start on Christmas Day.

I hoover every morning and evening because we have dogs.

I don’t clear up after lunch because I do the cooking. I’m given a glass of wine and told to sit down 😁.

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 20/12/2024 22:40

I’ve ten people for lunch, so aside from cooking, not a chance

airingcupboards · 20/12/2024 22:40

I do sometimes, depends how I feel.

I don't do any entertaining though.

Wildywondrous · 20/12/2024 22:41

The living room always gets covered in glitter, scraps of paper etc so I give that a quick vac and will wash up after dinner.

Samandytimlucypeterolivia · 20/12/2024 22:42

Deffo do washing if it needs to be done, we have 8 people in house if you stop for one day the washing builds up… we try to keep on top of it. We wash up etc.. house would look like a tip else. Don’t hoover because too many people about so it’s pointless but usually do that on Boxing Day quickly.
in this house ironing is a Sunday job and if Christmas Day is ever a Sunday I just leave it for the week after. We all have enough clothes to make it through 😂

TheTecknician · 20/12/2024 22:43

There's always washing-up to do. Laundry is a probability. One year I even pegged bed linen and towels on the line. Life goes on.

Aliflowers · 20/12/2024 22:43

We do a quick blitz of the downstairs once our guests have left (usually 7/8pm). Just a clean down of kitchen, and a quick sweep of the floor and steam mop. Myself and DH do it. Literally 20 mins but love getting up Stephen’s day and it’s done. Also stuff like beds and bins are done. I just see those as necessity’s
