Do you do housework on Christmas Day?

Prepared to accept that I’m a weirdo, but I’ll definitely do a washing (and hang it up to dry) and hoover. Once the day is done and the kid’s in bed, I’ll maybe do the ironing if there’s any sitting.

Am I a lunatic for doing housework that day? Do you do any?

FFS who irons on Christmas Day.

Dishwasher, bins. Wipe the kitchen surfaces down. That’s enough.

It's very difficult for me to get my head around the notion of "catching up" on ironing.

Haha yes it implies the existence of a normal ironing baseline, which doesn’t really happen around here.

No, massive no no. Pure chill time. I do do parkrun which is weird to some people!

dutysuite · 20/12/2024 23:40

No I do it all the day before, but I will load and unload the dishwasher, empty bins and clean away the presents/ wrapping paper.

ProvincialLady24 · 20/12/2024 23:41

Coking and washing up.

Would love to be a guest and be liked after.

Goag · 20/12/2024 23:41

Nothing, we don’t have a dishwasher so plates will be just put in the sink to deal with the next day

crouchendtigerr · 20/12/2024 23:41

I do nothing extra. It's my Christmas too. I make it as easy as possible, it that's because I can.

natwalesrug · 20/12/2024 23:42

fivebyfivebuffy · 20/12/2024 23:27

@natwalesrug for me a deep clean is stuff that isn't done regularly
So inside cupboards, pulling the fridge out, moving the bed, sofa, cleaning the top of kitchen cupboards etc etc

Oh ok . I had visions of furniture being cleaned, carpets etc 😂

crouchendtigerr · 20/12/2024 23:42

Dishwasher, roomba, and then I just enjoy it. It's important to me.

chillibuns · 20/12/2024 23:44

I'll aim to be caught up with washing etc before Christmas Day. On the day itself I'll just tidy as I go as previous posters have said.

How do you have time for Parkrun ?

Jellycatspyjamas · 20/12/2024 23:46

To be fair I will run the carpet cleaner over the hall, stairs and landing carpet - I have a mucky puppy who likes the stairs.

SWLondonLurker · 20/12/2024 23:47

There are 5 of us In the house so we can be 2 washing loads per day on a normal day.

I'm sorry, but what?! How is this even possible?

9am - back by 10 latest. Start the cooking and crack open the fizz! I only have to cook a meal for 4 💕

Amybelle88 · 20/12/2024 23:53

I do what needs doing and a wash - I can't stand it falling behind over Christmas and having to catch up whilst the house is up the wall.

SWLondonLurker · 20/12/2024 23:57

The whole cleaning/laundry obsession is a distinctly working to lower middle class thing that I have always found fascinating. I wonder where it comes from.

sunshineandshowers40 · 20/12/2024 23:57

Empty and load the dishwasher, put rubbish in the recycling is about it on Christmas Day.

Bumcake · 20/12/2024 23:58

I shall clean the kitchen, load the dishwasher and put the recycling out. Anything else can wait, I’ll be too drunk to make a thorough job of anything after about 4pm in any case.

Tbry24 · 20/12/2024 23:58

Definitely not. I try to get the major stuff all done by Christmas Eve and then have a week off. So all washing done etc.

On the day we put wrapping paper out in the bins and we wash up that’s it as it’s a day off.

Kibble29 · 20/12/2024 23:59

Talipesmum · 20/12/2024 23:32

This always completely baffles me. There are 4 of us in our house and we do maybe a few loads a week. I think some people do way more washing than others! I’ve just been getting most of it out of the way so I don’t need to do anything really over the next week as we’ve got guests so nowhere to dry things (we do have a tumble dryer but we don’t tend to tumble clothes, mostly just towels/sheets etc).

I might run a hoover round if the tree has been shedding needles and there are crumbs everywhere. And def would clear the decks with washing up / paper / recycling etc.

How do you manage a few loads a week? School uniforms, nursery clothes (maybe 2 lots per day) our work clothing, pjs, towels…it’s bloody never ending here.

How is it possible to fall behind by not doing a wash for one day. I do maybe 4 loads a week for 3 of us.

That’s a very good question. Unless there’s mass incontinence it seems a bit extreme.

ForGreyKoala · 20/12/2024 23:59

No, I wouldn't dream of doing anything, other than maybe the dishes. If you can't have a break from household routine on Christmas Day then I fear there is no hope for you.

ForeverSkys · 21/12/2024 00:00

Yes hoover, clean kitchen and do washing

Piss off with your goady generalisations.

Do you just get the staff to do yours? 🙄
