Do you do housework on Christmas Day?

Prepared to accept that I’m a weirdo, but I’ll definitely do a washing (and hang it up to dry) and hoover. Once the day is done and the kid’s in bed, I’ll maybe do the ironing if there’s any sitting.

Am I a lunatic for doing housework that day? Do you do any?

A quick once over downstairs before guests arrive (downstairs loo, hoover, tidy etc) and clean as we go in the kitchen. Bins generally need doing as there's so much rubbish and probably the odd clean up of mess.

So yes, but only the essentials.

RitaIncognita · 20/12/2024 22:46

Iron on Christmas? Definitely not. But then I don't iron on any other day either

Aliflowers · 20/12/2024 22:47

Will defo throw a wash on that night too. Just table clothes, napkins, tea towels but just to not hanging around the kitchen when they’re dirty

bakewellbride · 20/12/2024 22:49

I will wash up, wipe kitchen as needed, daily kitchen sink quick clean, daily quick downstairs hoovering that can't be avoided as we have a dog.

The show must go on!

bakewellbride · 20/12/2024 22:49

Oh and the fucking laundry

Sgtmajormummy · 20/12/2024 22:49

The only thing I care about on Christmas day is that the dishwasher is empty before the meal starts, ready for the dirty plates as they come off the table. Teetering piles of “good” crockery make my blood pressure rise.

Boutonnière · 20/12/2024 22:49

DH does basic tidying and however many dishwasher loads it takes, as I do the cooking. I don’t do normal laundry but I do shove the lovely damask tablecloths and napkins that only get used for special occasions into the washing machine before any stains set.

EconomyClassRockstar · 20/12/2024 22:51

NO! The house is clean and tidy anyway because I do it on the 23rd before all my kids arrive. I then relax and enjoy it.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 20/12/2024 22:51

No. Very weird to do housework on Christmas Day. Too much other stuff to do for many women!

And like a few others have said, the house has a big blitz a few days before anyway.......

.

Kibble29 · 20/12/2024 22:52

The washing is the only thing I’ll definitely do that others seem to say no to on Christmas Day. There are 5 of us In the house so we can be 2 washing loads per day on a normal day. Builds up very quickly and I don’t want to spend Boxing Day trying to get through a mountain of it.

Hoovering I think needs to be done with all the small bits of mess from wrapping paper, food crumbs etc. I guess that depends on the makeup of your family though; I have a toddler so it’s guaranteed.

Bins will go out too, of course, but that takes about 8 seconds.

Who the Hell cleans bathrooms on Christmas Day? It's so dour FFS.

prepareforthebacklash · 20/12/2024 22:59

If I have guests on Christmas day (rarely) then I won't not run the washing machine, the dishwasher, tidy & clean kitchen, and maybe run the vacuum cleaner round if there's an interlude.

If we are out for the day as guests, I do as little as possible.

This year I am home alone as hubby is working a 12 hour shift. I am really looking forward to catching up on my ironing, as even when I have a day off from work, I'm too busy to spend the time ironing. This will be a gift to myself.

airingcupboards · 20/12/2024 23:01

But saying it's weird is really judgmental- maybe some people don't have a day like yours?

Not everyone has a family they can spend time with or friends who are free.

Some of us even go to work too so it's not our day off.

Cyclebabble · 20/12/2024 23:04

I do not do the ironing or washing- just adds to the mess around the house, but some light hoovering and dusting for sure. Lot to do though on Christmas Day. In my house for various reasons the work falls to me- though I think this is the case for most of us?

titchy · 20/12/2024 23:04

I'm guessing that's a question to me?
Because they get cleaned every other day. Is that ok with you?

Then do them Xmas eve.

Do some of you get a kick out of being a martyr on Christmas Day or something? Couldn't possibly enjoy watching tv or playing a game with the kids, got to vacuum and clean the bath. Hmm

Wendysfriend · 20/12/2024 23:08

God no, I like having a few drinks in the evening and relaxing, I'll clean up after dinner. I do enough housework every other day, wouldn't dream of taking the hoover out or ironing. I make sure most things are done before Christmas and whatever isn't can wait until after. I would go mental if someone started hoovering around me or whipping out the ironing board Christmas day

magicalmrmistoffelees · 20/12/2024 23:08

No, I’ll be busy playing with my kids and enjoying myself

Xmas tv is usually repeats or shite.
kids? I will skype one set (in a different country) and a video call with another (UK)
Why does it bother you so much?
We don't do a Christmas day full of glitter and piles of tat. We do a Christmas that suits us.
Family aren't here the full day so general life goes on and jobs get done.

MrsR87 · 20/12/2024 23:22

I wouldn’t do anything “extra” as I’ll have cooked Christmas dinner and hosted with a two year old and four year old. But, I won’t go to bed with a mess so the dishwasher will be loaded, the other pots washed, Christmas rubbish disposed of etc and I’ll definitely need to hoover the dining room (thanks to the two year old). Other than that, when me and DH are putting the kids to bed, we’ll send the robot hoover round the rest of downstairs so it feels nice. Other than that, I won’t do any housework!

Ottersmith · 20/12/2024 23:23

Anyone who 'does ironing' must actually enjoy it or is being a wifey martyr because ironing is not a job that even needs doing. How old are your kids? Because if they are older than 13 then why would you be doing their washing for them?

fivebyfivebuffy · 20/12/2024 23:27

@natwalesrug for me a deep clean is stuff that isn't done regularly
So inside cupboards, pulling the fridge out, moving the bed, sofa, cleaning the top of kitchen cupboards etc etc

RitaIncognita · 20/12/2024 23:28

It's very difficult for me to get my head around the notion of "catching up" on ironing.

This always completely baffles me. There are 4 of us in our house and we do maybe a few loads a week. I think some people do way more washing than others! I’ve just been getting most of it out of the way so I don’t need to do anything really over the next week as we’ve got guests so nowhere to dry things (we do have a tumble dryer but we don’t tend to tumble clothes, mostly just towels/sheets etc).

I might run a hoover round if the tree has been shedding needles and there are crumbs everywhere. And def would clear the decks with washing up / paper / recycling etc.

PickAChew · 20/12/2024 23:33

I'll do bare minimum laundry (I don't want Ds2's pissy sheets and clothes festering longer than necessary) and clean up mess made on the day but nothing that doesn't create a more arduous job for being ignored.

Jellycatspyjamas · 20/12/2024 23:33

What is a deep clean? Genuine question

For me it means the bathrooms get a good scrub, instead of a wipe over, beds are changed, furniture hoovered under and behind, cupboards in the kitchen sorted and cleaned, fridges fully emptied and washed through, oven cleaned, cobwebs removed. Basically everything properly cleaned instead of wiped down as they usually are day by day.
