Petition to Call a General Election

A Petition to call a General Election is currently running, and I've never seen one signed by so many in such a short space of time. Clearly there are a lot of unhappy people in the UK - to put it mildly.

There are always a lot of people unhappy with whichever government is in power. We had our chance to have our say in July, we’ll likely have to wait until 2028 or 2029 to have it again. Turnout for the last election was the lowest in decades, I hope more people will turn out and vote next time. Performative petition signing is nothing compared to actually voting.

LindorDoubleChoc · 24/11/2024 10:32

It's pure craziness. There's already a thread running with a link to the petition (which for some reason hasn't been moved to the Petitions board).

Maybe you should have a large demonstration in London to protest at a democratic vote and demand another one?

People who don't like something sign a petition saying they don't like something.

Maybe there should be a petition saying "Don't have a general election"

Or maybe...and here's a thought. We have rules and laws in place for elections.

MermaidEyes · 24/11/2024 10:39

I'd be interested to know how many of those signing the petition either A, voted for Labour, or B, didn't bother to vote at all.

Echobelly · 24/11/2024 10:40

What a stupid petition. Yes, the Labour administration has not been great, but has everyone forgotten THE LAST 14 YEARS.

lonelyweather · 24/11/2024 10:40

If you have never seen something like this then I’m afraid you’ve not been paying attention. Politics in this country has been incredibly divisive for at least 20 years - do you remember the protests against the Iraq War? Austerity? Student fees? Brexit?

I don’t think you should just ‘shut up and take it’ but I presume you were one of the people who thought the rest of us should when we were protesting in the past?

I agree that this govt is rubbish. But they are by no means an outlier in terms of lying, unpopularity, or sheer bloody mindedness.

eggseggseggseggs · 24/11/2024 10:40

Bet Most of the people signing were the ones commenting about how awful the tories were and how labour was going to save the country

Karmas a bitch isn't it

I doubt that very much

afishcalledvanda · 24/11/2024 10:42

I'd be more inclined to call for a Labour leadership challenge. I can't get behind Keir.

MushMonster · 24/11/2024 10:42

There is another thread about this one, by the way.

I hope the OP comes back and reflects on her views when presented with facts that might change her reality.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/11/2024 10:47

This is one of the many times that I think all petitions should also have a button to sign for the opposite. Because thinking you get another go at a general election a few months in is batshit crazy.

GlomOfNit · 24/11/2024 10:48

The current administration won a bloody landslide, OP. Tough. They warned us before the election that there were no easy fixes. They approached the complex troubles we're in like grown ups and there was no sugar coating that I can remember. And enough people voted for Labour to sweep the board and demolish the Tories.

Delorian · 24/11/2024 10:49

It's like no one has ever had a job before. Labour got in a few months ago. If I'd started a new job then I'd barely know my way around the building, it's still be grappling with IT to make my email work etc. Did people expect them to come in and rescue the economy, lead world peace and create equality in the first few weeks?

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 24/11/2024 10:50

You might want to stop this thread and join in the other one or two already up

And with a media is like someone who really hates you and only tells people the negative stuff in a particular way.

MarketValveForks · 24/11/2024 10:54

A few hundred thousand signatures on a petition is meaningless when so many millions of people voted for Labour to take over. As it currently stands the proportion of petition signatories to labour voters is less than 5%

It is perfectly normal for a new government to make the major changes that are needed as quickly as possible after taking office because there is always a lag of a few years before the benefits are seen and they need those to start being noticeable before the 2029 election.

The criticisms of the Labour government are spurious. In the arena of personal ethical grubbiness nothing has happened that isn't fairly typical for politicians of any colour, and is normal for people who are rising to the top in that cutthroat world. The pure and erhical mps (<5 of them) stay as back benchers.

Policy-wise nothing they have done that wasn't in the manifesto is out of keeping with their general principles which are declared and understood. No government can only stick to what is im the manifesto and nothing more because it's obvious that situations change, the outgoing government may have held back vital information that made existing plans inappropriate, or world events may make a different course necessary.

If the petition exceeds 38.5 million signatures (the number of registered voters who didn't vote Labour) then the government might consider that its democratic mandate is a little shakey. Until then, they should carry on.

mumda · 24/11/2024 10:57

Apart from damaging energy security and food security, putting increasing taxes on employers and freezing old people what have they done wrong?

Nah.
As unlikely as it might sound, my bet is that most of the people signing are the ones who voted for Brexit - those same people who ever since have been extremely vocal and insistent about the need to accept the result of a democratic vote - as long as it is one that they approve of, that is!

Edited

One suspects they didn't think the 2 million signature cancel Brexit petition in 2019 should've been acted on either.

NamechangeForthisquestion1 · 24/11/2024 11:17

If people want change they need to get out and demand it, not sit at home signing petitions.

Topseyt123 · 24/11/2024 11:17

I voted Labour this time around. I don't want another general election right now, thank you very much.

I won't be signing such a stupid petition. There are always people who will have gripes with the existing government, including me at times too of course. The answer isn't a general election every time. We get that at least every four years anyway. There are always these types of petitions going and the number signing this one is insignificant.

I did sign the petition to revoke or not trigger Article 50 during the Brexshit débâcle as I thought that was so important. Of course, it was ignored and we are now where we are through stupidity.
