Petition to Call a General Election

A Petition to call a General Election is currently running, and I've never seen one signed by so many in such a short space of time. Clearly there are a lot of unhappy people in the UK - to put it mildly.

Doesn't look good for them that over a million have now signed it.

Starmer has a HUGE majority.
The next election is not for 4 years.
Petitions have no legal standing whatsoever.

Couldyounot · 24/11/2024 16:24

This petition will be just as effective as the various ones calling for Brexit to be reversed and all the various other things people were unhappy about over the past few years, which is to say that it will achieve the square root of fuck all, no matter how much people might want the thing being petitioned for.

Notellinganyone · 24/11/2024 16:25

Utterly ridiculous. The right wing press are pushing the agenda and people with no critical thinking faculties are lapping it up. This country needs to spend some serious money on its infrastructure and it has to get the money from somewhere. All this hoo ha about the farmers is nonsense. The main losers are those who invest in farmland as a tax dodge .

Hahaha. The sector of society used to having their own way all the time can't deal with not having their own way. I'm so here for it.

You keep telling yourself that.

Go on then, your erudition has persuaded me. This petition is so very significant that it'll bring the government down by Tuesday afternoon. Evening at the latest. Let's all meet back here then so we can talk about the vital role it played!

Conservative Central Office are really desperate.

No kidding, next I expect to see Vote Leave demanding a rerun of the general election. Keep rerunning the vote til they get the result they want, etc...

Probioaretheone · 24/11/2024 16:32

The ones calling everyone else snowflakes for the last decade are absolutely brats.

It’s similar to how in America when the right lost they stormed the capital and demanded recounts etc.

As shocked as democrats were this time they accepted it. Just like we accepted 14 years of chaotic corrupt tories.

No GE for 4 years - suck it up.

Inject it into my veins!

Pokemamma · 24/11/2024 16:34

I don’t know why people are signing this. I didn’t vote Labour but I certainly don’t want the conservatives back in. They are a shower of shite.

It’s like voting between the devil and the deep blue sea.

What’s funny though is I have the page up and every time I refresh it, it goes up by 20K.

Want the Tories back in by Wed? No thanks.

Hoppinggreen · 24/11/2024 16:35

Didn't we just have one?
Labour won (and no, I didn't vote for them) and people need to accept that.

BurntBroccoli · 24/11/2024 16:37

This is a counter petition

Petition
Create a public consultation on freedom of speech and disinformation
We believe that lies, fraud, and media toxicity threaten our way of life. We think new mechanisms are needed to preserve confidence. How else can people know what to trust?

DrCoconut · 24/11/2024 16:43

Tenner says reform are behind it. Whatever happened to "respecting a democratic vote" and "you lost, get over it?"

Exactly the same, l didn’t vote for Labour either, l voted for the Lib dems.Labour got in obvs, but l understand that’s how the voting system works, more people voted for them🙄

Doesn't look good for them that over a million have now signed it.

Over 6 million signed a petition asking for a 2nd EU referendum....remind me again how that turned out. Just because a petition has a shed load of signatures it doesn't mean the demands have to be carried out.

icelolly12 · 24/11/2024 17:12

Personally I don't agree with them withdrawing the winter fuel allowance for pensioners, as it was done basically with no notice and with rising fuel prices. Other than that can't say they've done anything I disagree with so far. What are people actually angry about that they think the shitshow of Tories would improve?

BarkLife · 24/11/2024 17:16

14 years of Tory austerity and people won't even give Labour 6 months to start mending things?

I shouldn't be surprised, really, Brexit was a clear signal that over half the country had never had a grip on the basics of economics, trade, geography, history, politics and international relations.

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/11/2024 17:25

We have an established democracy. The government is not X Factor or Strictly. When did the population of the UK get so stupid?🙄

I just want to thank the OP for their ongoing contribution towards this thread.

I'd be more inclined to call for a Labour leadership challenge. I can't get behind Keir.

I would imagine that's the most likely scenario at some point in the next 12 months. A lot of people predicted this for around the 18-month mark but his incredibly poor performance to date will no doubt have brought this forward considerably.

HappyNannie · 24/11/2024 17:31

Is this a joke ? After years and years of deplorable deprivation to all our public services by a conservative government you really expect a labour government to be a to fix the shit show left behind in less than a year. It's going to take time to uncover the scale of the damage that's been done. Seems some People have short memories of the conservatives behaviour especially during COVID the cronies lining each other's pockets pillaging as much as they could get out of the countries coffers phoney contracts for their millionaire donors. I for one will never ever forgive or forget their the partying during the COVID lockdown.
while they partied we were burying our father and grandfather some of our family and none of his friends or colleagues were not allowed to attend his funeral. Labour deserve a chance to make a difference and a better fairer future for us all.

chocolatemousse3 · 24/11/2024 17:32

Can you imagine if we have voted over Brexit twice a year until everyone is happy?

Vaxtable · 24/11/2024 17:35

Echobelly · 24/11/2024 10:40

What a stupid petition. Yes, the Labour administration has not been great, but has everyone forgotten THE LAST 14 YEARS.

Unfortunately I remember the Labour government before, they haven’t learnt anything, they bankrupted the country then, and looks like they are on the way to do exactly the same.

Bless.
Nobody will challenge him for years - they will let him do the dirty work and only defenestrate if he loses an election

Beamur · 24/11/2024 17:37

Labour won the election.
You can vote again in 4 years time.
That's how it works.

DinnaeFashYerself · 24/11/2024 17:37
  1. thats now how democracy works.
  2. very little engagement in my constituency
  3. less than one per cent have signed it.

so, no, not massive really .
