Petition to Call a General Election

A Petition to call a General Election is currently running, and I've never seen one signed by so many in such a short space of time. Clearly there are a lot of unhappy people in the UK - to put it mildly.

@Summernightsinthe21stcentury

We have to appreciate that, the mostly right-wing press has been telling everybody that, the current government have broken their promises and unfortunately a lot of people have just been lapping that message up without question.

Nevertheless I'm looking forward to reading @Mum2jenny 's answer

He also sold half our gold at stupid prices. Refused a referendum on EU/free movement.
You may too young to remember the shambles he left in his wake

Brown refused an EU referendum because it was a monumentally stupid idea which should never have been given as a vote. Cameron only agreed to it because his massive stupid ego told him he was a 'winner' (because he'd led a charmed life up till then) and he thought winning would save the Tory party from the far-right/UKIP/Brexit Party.

Unfortunately for everyone, Cameron was very wrong. The Tory party has essentially now become UKIP, with all their mad ideas, and the economy is fucked from all the problems Brexit caused.

If you voted Labour would you vote them in again. Genuine question. Not goady, just wondering if people would change their minds knowing what we've seen thus far.

Edited

I'm in Scotland and voted tactically for Labour, as did many here who are appalled at the 'governance' under the SNP. I will absolutely never be voting for Labour in any election ever again.

There were endless petitions to reverse Brexit. None of these petitions achieve anything . Both were democratic votes.🤷‍♀️

Absolutely, I don’t have the memory of a goldfish and remember the last shower.

So you think the current government is competent to be in charge for the next 5years? I disagree.
They are not sticking to manifesto promises. So they are lying bastards like most politicians! Point proven!!!!

'Ah, five exclamation marks, the sure sign of an insane mind.' - Terry Pratchett, Reaper Man.

I think the current government are doing OK. The howls of outrage from people suddenly having to pay their share of tax makes that quite clear.

Hellohelga · 25/11/2024 09:54

Sorry? We just had one. Labour won. Get over it.

fussychica · 25/11/2024 10:16

I was sent a link to the petition by a true blue friend who knows I wouldn't sign it. As she sends me loads of jokes and gifs I assumed this was a joke too especially as it's such a short time since the election. When I discovered it was real I said how very Trumpian and are they intending to storm Parliament?
Hasn't taken long for people to forget what a shit show much of the last 14 years was. Perhaps if some of the Tories hadn't defected to Reform in a fit of pique the Tory showing would have been better but there was no way they were ever going to win.

JustinThyme · 25/11/2024 10:35

I for one would like to thank the OP.

I’d heard about the spurious petition but thanks to this thread I’ve learned the phrase Spunk Monkeys and laughed about Laura K ranting and photocopying her arse.

cakeorwine · 25/11/2024 11:52

I have no doubt that if such a system had existed in 1979, then there would be a petition to call for a General Election after Thatcher had won.

And one when she won again.
And again
And when Major won
And when Blair won.
And when Cameron won
And May

Etc

And especially when Johnson won

Clearly you are well off and how on earth are the Tory’s the new UKIP?

Yes, absolutely.
Am very happy with majority of policies put forward so far.

Yes I absolutely would vote for them again as would everyone I know.

It'll take time to rectify the car crash of the last 14 years.

How are you getting that I'm well off from my post?!

The Tories are the new UKIp because they took us out of the EU, Boris got rid of all the semi-decent people in the party, the Rwanda scheme, suggesting leaving the ECHR... it's all populist nonsense.

This is the assumption by the Tory hard of thinking that if you vote Labour, you're either 1) a champagne socialist with gazillions in the bank, or 2) a lazy good for nothing benefit scrounger.

The idea that there are people who actually give a shit about others simply doesn't occur.

Echobelly · 25/11/2024 19:01

It's just getting silly now because anyone can get bots or people from other countries on these things if you tell them UK postcodes. Plenty of us are disappointed with Labour, but not to the point of wanting the Tories back and what a coincidence this should get so much traction when Twitter is run and heavily steered by a petty billionaire with a grudge against Keir Starmer. And obviously it won't do anything even if it gets 10 million 'signatories'.

Genuinely quite surprised. Most people I've spoken to who say they voted Labour are appalled by them so far.

I was very unhappy throughout the Tory years. I am not a huge fan of Starmer’s government either. I do however understand how our electoral system works ( not a fan of it either ). We elected a government, we can’t do away with it by petition.

And?

And…I’m not a child, as you seem to be implying! I was using reason, evidence and facts to support my position, and you were accusing me of not remembering the Brown government (I was bloody married in 2008!).

User135644 · 25/11/2024 20:33

JasonTindallsTan · 24/11/2024 11:25

I voted Labour and I’m more than happy with how they’re getting in mere months into office. Whilst I don’t necessarily think they’re getting everything right I think that everything they are doing is with the express purpose of improving things for the majority. Which after the last 14 years of the self serving spunk monkeys who care about nothing more than how what they’re about to do will impact THEM and their cronies is a refreshing change.

So nope. I’ll not be signing the petition and I shall instead enjoy the 4 year reprieve.

I don't like Labour and didn't vote them, but I'd certainly prefer them to the Tories or whatever the latest Farage grift is.

Hmm, interesting, how long have Labour been in office, 4 months is it? As soon as they got in there was utter contempt for Labour, people or rather Tories voters willing them to fail and worse
As far as the petition goes, Starmer has said there will not be another general election, that was on Sky news today. The people (Conservatives voters) signing the petition are forgetting, or just ignoring that Labour have a lot of power, it was a landslide victory they have 411 seats out of 650, so how was a Mickey Mouse petition going to overturn their power and yes l think l did actually see Micky Mouse’s signature on there.
The people who are ‘appalled’ by Labour, are all the anger people who voted for the Conservatives, it’s so blatantly obvious.

I was also very unhappy throughout the Tory years. I frequently hoped an election would be called and actually woke up on 1st Jan this year thinking, "Thank God we've made it to election year." However, I would never have dreamed of signing a petition calling for an election. You have to let a government run its course. All sorts of things can happen in 5 years.

I'm actually embarrassed that there are so many people who do not understand how our electoral system works. We must look like complete muppets to other countries yet again. I'm also quite worried by the fact that there appears to be involvement of other countries in this petition.
