Petition to Call a General Election

A Petition to call a General Election is currently running, and I've never seen one signed by so many in such a short space of time. Clearly there are a lot of unhappy people in the UK - to put it mildly.

Did you vote @DancingFerret ? I would imagine a lot of people signing your petition didn’t.

14 years of Tory austerity and people won't even give Labour 6 months to start mending things?

I shouldn't be surprised, really, Brexit was a clear signal that over half the country had never had a grip on the basics of economics, trade, geography, history, politics and international relations.

This ⬆️

Mebebecat · 24/11/2024 17:43

I shan't be signing, but I doubt many of the signatories think this will oust Starmer. They want a way to show their disapproval. Protests and hurty words have seen multiple people with lengthy prison sentences so this is another way to cause embarrassment. Fair enough. People have every right to make a fuss about stuff they don't agree with.

Tenner says reform are behind it. Whatever happened to "respecting a democratic vote" and "you lost, get over it?"

Or maybe Vlad is the OP?

Bless.
Nobody will challenge him for years - they will let him do the dirty work and only defenestrate if he loses an election

Wishful thinking perhaps

And vote in who instead???

Who keeps saying the current government is chaos?

The right-wing Tory press.

Have you seen the growth figures, inflation rate, debt levels, projected interest rates , potentially dying oaps?

Labour are about growth, growth , growth.... I certainly see it alright

Do you think that it makes any difference whatsoever?

We have had a vote, Do you know how UK elections work?

Crikeyalmighty · 24/11/2024 18:32

If this is activism generated by either far left or the right ( don't care which angle it's coming from) it's pointless and quite pathetic -

Of course the gvt have to do some unpopular stuff - that pisses off either the right or left- me? I'm fine with all of it - I agree with virtually everything so far. Of course they will get lots of signatures-anyone who voted Tory or Reform likely aren't going to be a fan, nor those to the left of the Labour Party who seem to think there's a constant money tree for every pet cause they have-

If plenty of us had to suck up Brexit despite calls for a second referendum that buggered businesses , economy, and cost hundreds of billions to achieve bugger all - then you will have to suck it up this time- tough!!

BarkLife · 24/11/2024 18:33

Wrong. The opposite, in fact. Gordon Brown saved the world economy from disaster in 2008 with his measures in response to the subprime mortgage-induced crisis in the USA.

Austerity was ideological. Tell the electorate we're broke so that we can cut public services. Utterly reprehensible and irresponsible.

I posted this on another thread but worth a repeat I think.

Some of the signatures on that petition are a bit suspect.

MarketValveForks · 24/11/2024 10:54

A few hundred thousand signatures on a petition is meaningless when so many millions of people voted for Labour to take over. As it currently stands the proportion of petition signatories to labour voters is less than 5%

It is perfectly normal for a new government to make the major changes that are needed as quickly as possible after taking office because there is always a lag of a few years before the benefits are seen and they need those to start being noticeable before the 2029 election.

The criticisms of the Labour government are spurious. In the arena of personal ethical grubbiness nothing has happened that isn't fairly typical for politicians of any colour, and is normal for people who are rising to the top in that cutthroat world. The pure and erhical mps (<5 of them) stay as back benchers.

Policy-wise nothing they have done that wasn't in the manifesto is out of keeping with their general principles which are declared and understood. No government can only stick to what is im the manifesto and nothing more because it's obvious that situations change, the outgoing government may have held back vital information that made existing plans inappropriate, or world events may make a different course necessary.

If the petition exceeds 38.5 million signatures (the number of registered voters who didn't vote Labour) then the government might consider that its democratic mandate is a little shakey. Until then, they should carry on.

Didn’t they explicitly say they wouldn’t raise tuition fees? I hope the removal of the winter fuel allowance goes for them. Keir is atrocious!

People still have the right to protest if they feel the government lied to them before getting into power. Some will defend Labour even when old people start dying of cold because they’re too tribal to do anything else. They’ll even say David Lammy was appointed because of his incredible intellect and maturity on the work stage

Thevelvelletes · 24/11/2024 19:14

Because no pensioners died when the conservatives held power...COVID .. care homes spring to mind.

See I've signed it, in the hope it forces a vote of no confidence in Starmer Rayner and Reeves.

(I voted Lib Dem and have done for a lot of my voting history)

I've signed it as I feel everything they have done so far is not in correlation to their manifesto. I DO feel they lied to the electorate. And therefore the Labour Party should put someone into the position to uphold what they promised their many voters.

Not raising tuition fees would have been stupid. University fees have been cut by 23% in real terms since they were last raised in 2017 and the minute increase merely makes that cut 21%. Universities are on their knees with underfunding. Given that repayments are based on income rather than amount owed, the net effect of raising fees has zero effect on any individual's finances for the time being (except students from hyper-wealthy families that pay upfront who will be down by a less than £1000 over 3 years) and will only make some very wealthy loan-repayers pay a little more in 15-30 years time while most graduates on ordinary incomes will pay not a penny more. What a silly thing to be upset about when the main reason for the various financial plan changes was the Tories having lied about the country's financial position.

wigywhoo · 24/11/2024 19:52

I'm a Tory, I hate this government, but this is foolish. It's how parliamentary democracy works.
